    Hi Hive,

I am not big on posting or even commenting...I am more of a hive stalker, however I have a question that I need help with. I just picked up my wedding dress and veil today, I was a bit surprised to get the call that it was in because I was under the impression I wouldn't get it until September. But I have it and it is in a garmet bag hanging in my closet. My wedding is not until NEXT MAY....question...what is the BEST way to keep/store a wedding dress?

    Please, Please, Please Help ;)

I'm sure there are tons of tips out there but my top three would be:

    1. Put it on a nice cloth hanger or at least plastic

    2. Keep it out of sunlight

    3. Keep it in a cool, dry area

I just sewed a garment bag for mine out of a white sheet.  That's after I read here that keeping the dress in a plastic bag is bad for the fabric.  Not sure what will happen to it in the plastic, but I figured better safe than sorry.

I just bought a white twin size sheet from Target, folded it in half and sewed it into a bag, leaving a hole at the top for the hanger to come out.  It was really simple and the sheet was $7.99.  Of course, if you have a poofier dress, you might need a bigger sheet.

There are other posts on this topic on the boards here, from them and the internet, I learned that a plastic garmet bag is not a good way to store a dress (which makes me wonder why David's sold me one) because it can't breathe and trapped moisture could lead to mildew. The word mildew was enough to convince me to buy a new garmet bag. I read that canvas or another natural, non dyed fiber is the best. I ordered a large garmet bag from the container store since my dress has a long train and needs to be stored until September 2010. Aparently it is best to store dresses folded in a box, not on the hanger if storing for more than 6 months but mine is too bulky for that. In reality, I'm sure it would be jut finei n the plastic bag but I didn't want to risk it since it is being stored at my parents' house and I won't see it until one week before the wedding.

A breathable cloth garment bag is what was recommended to me.
