We unfortunately do not have any family where we live nor do we have neighbors we would trust with our babies (2 dogs and 1 cat...stinkin adorable imho). Seeing how when one goes into labor is normally an unpredictable occasion of when it exactly will happen, my husband and I are wondering what we are going to do once I go in labor. We both have no idea how long labor will last of course. We normally hire a pet sitter when we leave town, but we are not sure how it will work out to have one on call. I'm curious to see if anyone has gone through this, and would love to hear suggestions. Thanks!

Can you contact the pet sitter you've had before and see if they are willing to be on call? If so, you can give them an extra key ahead of time and then it's just a quick call when you leave for the hospital. They don't have to come over right away. The pets will be ok on their own for a certain period of time.

@julies1949:  I agree! I would call the sitter you normally have and see if they are up for that.

We also have 2 dogs and a cat but we are lucky enough that friends and family live close by. Also, we are only about 5 minuets from the hospital if DH needs to come back here for some reason.

Luckily we only have a cat, so she'll be fine on her own for a day or so. But I agree with the other folks. Give your usual pet sitter a call to see if being on call would work. I'm sure they wouldn't have an issue with it.

Could you call a kennel and see if they usually have any open spots? I don't know where you live but the kennel by us is only $20 a day so it would be worth it to reserve a spot for a few days around the time you start having mild contractions and stuff. That way puppy can just go to the kennel whenever you need him to.
