Ugh. We set caps of $200, which isn't enough to buy him a really nice watch. Here's the kicker--he has clothes, doesn't need anything, doesn't really have any specific hobbies, and isn't really "into" anything. What to get a guy who isn't picky?! What are you getting yours?
Ugh, I'm having this same problem. There's a sweater at J. Crew he likes, and a couple of DVDs he wants... but that all seems so very not-special. I want to get him one big thing but man, he doesn't need anything!
Me too. My sister and I were going to go in together on a Wii for my fiance, then my aunt/uncle, parents and grandparents stole it from us! I guess I will get him some random little things - dvd's, itunes gift card... My sis is getting him the extra controller and some games for the Wii. Eh, guys are hard!
Agh, I struggle with this as well. He's got it so easy because anything that shows up in a Little Blue Box will make me squeal with joy but I have no clue what to get him. Plus, his birthday is freaking December 4th, so I've got a double gift whammy! I think he wants a few video games, but yeah -- that seems really unspecial.
I think I'm getting the big guy a BluRay player. They have one on sale at Target on Black Friday for $150 + $20 Target gift card. Every freakin' time we start up the DVD player, he's like, "if only we had a BluRay player..." Plus BluRay disc prices are going way down and lots of players are streaming Netflix. So I think it's a win-win.
For your guy, maybe a PSP or Nintendo DS? Would he get any use out of that? Or a nice coat?
Well our one year anniversary is just a few days before Christmas so either basketball tickets or picture frames with pic of us and some decorations for his new place...It really depends on what I get!
@hotchild: Make sure you do your research on blu-ray players! My man has one and it hasn't been reading the discs properly, so it pauses every few minutes. Boooo.
MinMan has expensive hobbies; recording music, tech stuff, cooking. Maybe I'll get him a caffeine patch and a ladle. Or I'll get some ribbon and wrap myself up in my birthday suit. Easy peasy.
$200...isn't too little for a really nice watch. You just have to really keep your eyes out for deals. Sites like Hautelook, Gilt, RueLaLa always have watches on sale there. The other day there were Omega watches for ~$150. I got the FI a Skagen watch from Gilt for $50! They are super nice & slim.
There's got to be something they really want but will not tell you they do! Just keep your ears peeled.
The FI & I are combining our engageaversary & Christmas gift into one. We're going back to the cabin where we got engaged as Christmas gift for each other. =)
@hotchild,
If you are thinking about a BluRay player I would really recommend getting a PS3 instead. The quality is insane good and it's a upconverter as well for DVDs. And you get a gaming system!
Okay so I'm not the only one with no ideas! He has an XBox and already told me he doesn't want a new PS. Boo. And i bought him a nice coat last year.
My cop-outs are clothes (some funny t-shirts and a nice dress shirt or two), a steak dinner (gift card probably, but then i feel weird b/c i'm cashing in on it, too!), a basket of horror movies he likes (i saved the zombie movie list hotchild made!)....ugh.....*blank mind*
I'm getting my guy a Bike, It's time to get active Mr. (hint hint)
@hotchildinthecity - Where did you find out what the black friday sales would be? My husband wants a portable DVD player and I figured there will be some great deals then but haven't known where to go to see the deals.
I never know what to get my FI for X-mas, and to top it off his birthday is in December too! The last couple of years we have just gone on a weekend getaway over christmas break as our present to each other.
*snort* Caffine patch and a ladle. I vote for that!
@hotchildinthecity: I second the Playstation for the Blu Ray Player. That's what we use AND the hubs gets to game all he wants!
Why are guys so hard to shop for sometimes!?!! i'm going through this right now for our anniversary...Have NO idea what to get him. I got some good ideas on here, but I just can't decide and I only have 2 days!!!!
I love the watch idea. Over the years I've bought DH several watches. He likes big, bulky, masculine watches and I love picking them out.
@EJS: I like that watch a lot - but when/where do you envision him wearing it? Do you think he would be able to wear it to work? It's a pretty trendy/casual watch. I'm not sure what his style is or his work attire is, but that's something I always think about. when my husband gets a new watch he usually wants one he can/will wear everyday (to work, parties, errands, etc.) Just a thought...
Are you the kind of couple who has other couples over for games and wine? My guy friends are all obsessed with the game Acquire. I think it's suuuuuuuper boring, but the guys all love it. They play for hours while we sit around and talk, so I got J his own set for his birthday (which is later this month). He was pretty excited about it. :)
Since our wedding is less than a week after Christmas, we have a $100 cap. So I am getting him some Bears gear. Maybe/hopefully he will get me the diamond earring solitaire's I've been eyeing for six months.....
@MrsK2Be, well, my husband is getting out of the army and he hates that he's had to wear an ugly military style watch--green band, not metal, etc. It's a really ugly digital $5 one. He has a simple metal one (stainless steel) and I think he'd be able to wear this one whenever. If he wanted to return it, i'd be ok with it, if he didn't like it. He's an engineer and will likely end up in an office somewhere. Most engineering offices in his field are relatively loose on dress codes. I wear jeans most days and a t-shirt to work, sometimes a polo if i'm feeling fancy. I thought about buying him a nice one for nice nights out, but frankly, we dont' do that too often! I think it's kinda sleek I guess...I see it being a wear-all kind of style =]
@daydreamwanderer, well, he hasn't moved home yet so we haven't had anyone over. Likely, no, not very often. He mentioned hosting a dinner party at some time, but with me in grad school, we just don't have time to entertain yet.
I did come up with another idea--a pizza cookbook and a pizza stone with a cutter...i was sneaky and went to look at our registry and i remember he specifically said he wanted to have a pizza stone. I doubt we'll use it often, though. I really wish I could find him something I know he'd love. Maybe a stupid t-shirt, haha.
Gosh, that is hard. I'm in the same boat as mine pretty much buys everything he wants for himself.
-A new wallet?
-A fancy key chain (prada makes nice ones)
-get his car detailed?
I'm with you on clothes being the cop-out...I'm always buying him clothes, and he so doesn't need any!
i'm having issues with this too. i don't like to get him sports stuff, because we like rival sports teams and i really really don't want his ugly sports crap in my house. last year i got him a tent, but that was a selfish reason, it was a nice big tent and i wanted him to enjoy camping. it worked.
@ Gerbera -- thanks for the link! I just went to the site and saw that Amazon.com is having a huge sale on Blue Ray Discs. Looks like someone is getting their favorite movies on Blu Ray for part of his Christmas present!
haha. I think men are just inherently more difficult to please.
He uses that cheap Suave shampoo and body wash. I'm thinking I could upgrade him to luxe body washes. Then again, that is selfish, too--not only will he smell nice, but his skin will be nice, too =-]
wait, he's an engineer? duh, gadgets! Boys luuuuurrrrve gadgets!
J about peed on himself the first time I showed him http://www.thinkgeek.com/ - he wanted to buy EVERYTHING they sell!
I have this same problem this year. To help give everyone ideas, here are some good gifts I've given the man. Last year I gave him a trip to a lake house with all of our friends. It was $600 but my friends chipped in for their part and it was an amazing weekend. Granted it took place 5 months after Christmas but it turned out to be right after he proposed so it was like an engagement party as well. I gave him an iTouch for his birthday and he loves it. He downloaded a few fun games and plays it all the time. Then I got him the Sharper Image indoor/outdoor wireless iTouch speaker from Bed Bath and Beyond to go with it. He loves it. I love it. The sound quality is great and we can use it outside and control it wirelessly from up to 150 ft away. One Christmas I got him a set of bags (or cornhole if you're from Ohio) that he loved. I got the mass-produced Chicago Bears set from tailgatetoss.com and they are too slippery. If I did it again, I would have custom ones made for a bit more $.
We're on a serious Christmas budget because of the wedding and I'm having the same problem.... He just bought Modern Warfare, so that's out. I haven't a clue.
@FallFlowers and Gerbera: I actually recommend bfads.net for early BF ads. I've been using the site for years and it's always accurate.
Re: BluRay player vs. PS3. Thanks for the suggestions! The PS3 is actually pretty out of the budget this year. The BluRay player I'm looking at is $150 + $20 Target gift card on Black Friday. The PS3 is minimum $300 even on BF! FI is not much of a video game guy....got him a PS2 a few years ago and he doesn't even play it often enough to warrant the PS3 purchase.
Also @FallFlowers: I think Target has a good deal on portable DVD players (maybe $80 if I'm remembering right?) They'll go fast though I'm sure. We'll be there at 4am for the BluRay haha
Does he like sports? You could get him an authentic jersey, I've done this a few times and he loved it. Sadly, I've exhausted my options, NFL, MLB, College football.
Maybe talk to him about a joint gift, Decide together to spend $400 on a weekend getaway or something. Hubby and I might do this with golf lessons.
BTW, I LOVE that you set caps too! We've been doing this for years and it makes things so much easier (usually!)
I've been having a tough time too...
So far this is what I've come up with:
Tickets to Rob Thomas and OneRepublic at Mohegan Sun (in CT)
Capcatcher Bottle Opener from http://www.capcatchers.com
Back to the Future Tshirt from http://www.bustedtees.com
and... I don't know what else, still thinking. We usually spend around $150 or so.
What about a TV show box set? My husband always wants those of his fav shows, but never wants to buy them himself. Or even a few seasons of a TV show?
Any Bees have men in their lives who love to BBQ? Some days, I think the boy loves that grill more than me (in fairness, the grill doesn't give him crap about hanging up his coat in the closet) -- maybe something grilling related?
@Minutae: lol @ caffeine patch and a ladle. ^_^
I have no idea what to get Mr Spin. I was thinking about buying Wii Olympic Games since it looks pretty fun but I feel like that's a cop out since I got him a Wii game last year. :P And he hates to wear watches (which I find amusing since he has to wear one to take pulses at work) and doesn't care about clothes. *siiiigh*
I got him a Venus flytrap for his birthday, which he thought was totally awesome, but sadly he left it in my care and I killed it, so I definitely can't get him anything alive this time. ^_^ I'm kinda thinking about trying to buy a neat fossil for my dinoasur fanatic...
@CupcakeSprinkles,
Do not get me started on the grills! Just kidding. Seriously that boy has a grill addiction. We have more grillS than anyone we know. Yes, plural! =) What about a charcoal Weber Grill? The circular ones? It's like the mecca for true grillers. =) Digital thermometer?
What kind of grill do you have? If it's one of those super duper ones you can be attachment/accessories for it? Like Beer Can chicken props. Rotiserrie accesories?
Is he into smoking? If he is that opens up a whole new realm of possibilities!
Turkey Fryer Kit?
We have to buy for so many other people we agreed not to buy for each other this year. I know he'll get me something small so I might just get little stocking stuffers for him to open Christmas morning.
Do you have Wii? If he's into gaming What about buying him one of the new Rockband games like the Beatles. I bought my FI the Star Wars game for his B-day - he's kind of a geek like that.
A few more ideas:
- a professional old fashioned shave
- really nice high end sunglasses? (also great cuz he can use then on the honeymoon)
- a really good camera
- If he's into sports: new set of golf clubs?
- If he's into music: a new Guitar & lessons?
I bought FI this watch a while ago. Not sure if you have a Lord&Taylor near you but if you have a L&T card they send you TONS of mailers & coupons. I used it on the watch & then it was only like $80.
I was in the same boat then he told me he didn't have emought to buy the x box 360 he wanted so i gave him half on it since he got the other half for free for turning in another system and other games. The only thing is im not going to let him have it till christmas lol ;p.
Um my DH officially sounds like a loser. While *I* think all the previously menioned ideas are cool, I don't think he'd be too thrilled about a lot of them!
Yes, he's an engineer, but he's like, the atypical engineer....he's not into geeky stuff the way I am! He has sports jerseys and all taht stuff, too. He's into the Rams but boy, they suck =]
I'd LOVE to buy him new sunglasses. But he's always bitching about how weird glasses look on his face. Sigh. Maybe i'll just buy him some Ray Bans and he can exchange them at will.
My husband has no interests!!!!!!!!!!!!! GAH
Now, this isn't his style at all, but it's pretty funny. It's a Zombie Brains Hoodie, to ward off a zombie attack, LOL
When I asked HIM what he wants for Christmas, he told me "cupcake and a bj". Thanks for the help babe.
that geek site is AMAAAZING. i'm addicted. the nerd in me is thrilled
