I’m attending a shower soon. The couple lives in her parent’s basement with their little one. They can 100% afford a very nice house to live in, they just see no need to actually move out.
They have chosen to register for typical registry items: pots and pans, dishes, linens, appliances, etc. I’m a frugal person, and I don’t want my gift to sit around and collect dust for a year or two until they move out. I don’t mind spending money for something that will be used and is high quality.
I’m kind of leaning towards the gift certificate.. but would like opinions.
What should I give?
1. Linens – they can use them now (hesitant since I don’t want everyone to think the same thing I do and have them wind up with 10000 towels)
2. Bed Bath and Beyond gift certificate (they are registered here, and then they can get something and I can just hope they buy something they can use)
3. Frames that are like the ones they registered for, but half the price on Amazon for the exact same thing.
4. Cash. If they want to buy diapers or a night out, they can, at least it would be used!

I think your best bet is a gift certificate. Let them buy what they could use now while still in someone else’s house.

@Ennie: If you’re worried about them not using something though, I’d say just stick with what they’ve registered for (choose something practical rather than ornamental if this matters to you). Isn’t the point of a registry that they list things they actually do want and will use?
Not forgetting of course that cash is something that will definitely not sit around collecting dust!

They are guaranteed to appreciate and use a cash gift, that’s what I would get.

Cash. They can use that for anything!

i’d say they’re all good choices except frames. couples always end up with too many no matter how many they register for, and they usually end up clashing if they’re not all from the registry.

I would hope people wouldn’t go off-registry for linens/towels, though – they shouldn’t end up with 10,000 towels if people just get them what they asked for!

I vote for linens–specifically, the ones on their registry. They get what they want, and you get what you want too… that is, for your gift to be used immediately.
