I saw a girl who packed her dress in a giant pillowcase and used it as a pillow on the plane. It was probably someone on this site...
hahaha! That is a great idea!! Though, I wish they could hang my gown up in their closet...
The pillow was on this site. I have also seen people who put them in the first class coat closet if they were in first class, so if you are, that may work. I would definately put it in something that will protect your dress from liquids. You don't want to bump someone and have water or anything else spilt on the dress. I would even consider putting it inside a cotton garment bag inside a plastic garment bag. That is how I transported mine even via car.
If you are not wanting it to hang then dont even bother taking a hanger.. That will just get in the way and draw attention to your dress. You can get a hanger on the other side.
Also, is shipping your dress an option?? You may look into some insured shipping, and ship it in a rubbermaid type case so it is protected.
It was Miss Poodle that made the pillow: http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/10/22/how-to-travel-with-a-wedding-dress/
I agree with the pp look into insured shipping, that might be the way to go.
I'm stressing about this too - my dress is kind of big (a bit of poof in the shirt), and definitely wouldn't work as a pillow. Any tips would be helpful! I'm nervous about shipping it, but it might be the safest option - I'll be taking about 3 flights to get across the country to my wedding spot.
I packed my dress(es) inside their garment bags, folded up carefully into standard size rolling hard-sided carryon suitcases. It made for easy transport through the airport, but then I could take out the dresses and hang them, if the opportunity arose (as in the first-class closet or laid out across the top of bags in the overhead compartment). I actually never ended up taking the dresses out on any of the flights, and they arrived just fine. Good luck!
Thanks for the tips... I can't decide if I would be okay folding it up and jamming it in my carry on. That of course would be ideal. My only concern is that there are little ruffles on the whole dress, an I've not used the seamstress who is going to be steaming this gown before. She may not get them.
Shipping is out because it would cost $300!! Its gotta get to Turkey!

I have that thread bookmarked. You'll need to steam it no matter what when you get there. I say hand carry it. Why take ANY risks?

Okay, I'm taking my gown as my main carryon item in the plane. What can I pack it in??
