We’re having a late cocktail reception and we’re going to have lots of little finger foods out buffet-style, but I’m affraid that the tables are going to look naked since it’s a buffet, and the dishes etc will be at the food tables. We’ll still have tables cloths, runners and centerpieces, but I forsee a lot of empty space. What should I do?

What about napkins, silverware and drinking glasses?

I agree with Cole – you should have the silverware, glasses and napkins on the table and the guests get their plates from the buffet line. You could do menus at each place setting too.

How about votives? They look beautiful and they’ll take up alot of room in the middle of the table.

well… not everyone likes to eat finger foods with their fingers… i’d suggest some silverware and water glasses (try to put a pitcher of water on each table.)

Votives are a fantastic addition. Are your table runners patterned, ie – do they have a damask pattern or are they colorful?

Like the pp suggested, I would make up little menus at each place setting, tucked inside the folded napkin. This will add color to your table too.

What about something really simple like a fuji mum in a low vase?
Sorry, not great quality. It was one of my early tests.
Or what about a low floating candle?
I think one small vase would go a long way on tables for a cocktail type reception.

Thanks everyone, these are all great ideas. 🙂 Folded napkins will help a lot and so will water pitchers and votives.
@jackie-o: I haven’t made the table runners yet, but I’m planning to get a bunch of different patterned fabrics in our colours and do each table with a different one.
