We were using Time Warner Cable but recently switched to Dish Network because it was a LOT cheaper for us and what we needed. The only downside we've found with channels (well, that I've found) is that you have to add on a package for Lifetime, We, Oxygen, and Bravo (and other channels but that's why we added it) for a little extra every month. We don't have DVR, I'm not even sure how many channels we have, and I believe it's around $40 a month (of course now they offer free HD and I'm not 100% positive on the bill because fiance pays it but I believe it was $35 then we added $5 extra for those channels). We also got all the Cinemax movie channels for a year for a penny for the first year. Also, if the weather becomes super severe it can go out but usually it's fine. We had like seven inches of snow last year (in Columbia, South Carolina!) and it didn't go out.
We have Cox so I can't really help...sorry! My mum has Comcast though and it is pretty much the same as Cox, just the commonly used (in her town) MA provider. Good luck!
We have TimeWarner cable. For internet & tv+dvr, it's $105. We've been pretty happy with them. I don't know exactly how many channels we get, probably around 100, we only watch about 10 of them.
We have comcast :( They pretty much suck, we have like 8 channels w/ our basic cable. It's tied into our internet and we pay an extra $4/mo for it. They have monopolized the area.
We have Time Warner cable. They are the only game in town, unless we go to a dish/direct tv, which we don't want to do right now
None- we use an antenna for the major networks, and a combination of Netflix and Hulu.
We aren't big TV people. We also use Netflix and Hulu if we want to watch something really badly. We use Time Warner for Internet.
it depends on your area...my husband has wanted att uverse but i would CRY without those channels!!!! those are ALL i watch! lol. :D
we have Brighthouse. not awful - but expensive. for full internet + cable (all HD channels + HBO) we pay $150/month.
I also have Comcast. I would NOT recommend it, but like @beekiss2, it has monopolized our area as well. We didn't have a choice. Not great prices, not great options, TERRIBLE customer service.
Just antenna. I get about 5-6 networks in HD with it and that is fine with me.
I use Hulu for anything else. I have a DVR, but now mostly watch anything I miss online instead.
Not very helpful to you I suppose...
When we move in together I am really hoping we can continue to avoid cable- it is just so much money and it just sucks your time away.
@JuneBride_26June2010: Supposedly the cancellation is temporary as they negotiate terms/costs for those channels on iPhone/iPad. It's just been a big deal with the way they're handling it. So big I don't want to stay with them. But a warning - the tv freezes, blacks out, loses sound and randomly erases our DVR recordings quite often now (3-5 times/week). They've were good at first, but have been barreling downhill.
We have Verizon. I have no real complaints and we're satisfied w/ them. I think they have awesome packages, but kinda high prices (we pay almost $100 just for a home phone and internet). We really have no choice in the matter, Verizon is the only provider in our area.
We are very happy with Verizon FiOS and we got a great deal from them. We had Time Warner when we lived in Syracuse because there were no other options, and we had tons of problems with their services.
We have comcast and it's terrible but where we are at it is the only company we can go with. It is very expensive (we pay more for our cable and internet compared to my parents on another company) and our direct TV NEVER works. We have to to call and get it reset multiple times. The last time DH called and it was reset but still does not work. That was a week ago.
I was thrilled with AT&T U-verse until they took away my favorite channels. I don't even know why i have it now.....everything we watch (besides those channels) are ABC, NBC, and other easily available channels. Bummers
we have time warner now, because they had a less expensive bundle package. i really dont like it very much. we switched from directv which i loved but was expensive. and bf hated b/c severe weather did make it cut out. there are def pros/cons to both. i am happy with TWC's customer service though. (and i agree with some of the above pp's- before i moved to nc, i lived in va where comcast was pretty much the only local cable option. it was HORRIBLE.)
We have DishNetwork
We love it! We're on the 120 channel plan, and had HBO/SHO free for the first 3 months (which sadly just ended!). We have free HD, and it costs $24.99+ taxes, and that's the price for the first year. Then it goes to about $40 a month after the initial 12 month period.
It doesn't go out very often, only in really weird weather. My parents recently chose Dish also, after living with just antena tv for 20 years. We were really happy with our provider choice, and hope to participate in their move option/program when we do relocate in a few years.
My parents have comcast - I miss it so much! It is a lot better than what FI and I have now, TimeWarner. But TW is the best price for our area and we can't get comcast up here.
We have time warner... since it is a rental it was either that, or RCN, and RCN doesn't have MSG (the channel that broadcasts our local hockey game). We also bundle phone/internet/tv and I don't even want to tell you what it costs...
We have Time Warner, its $128 for internet (7Mbps) and cable/dvr/on-demand we also have an upgraded sports package which was about $5/month. IMO too expensive but we split it with our roommate so its not awful...
@soonerpsych:We had DVR recordings that kept being erased. We got a new box from AT&T and the problem has been completely fixed.
With the cutting in and out we switched out the original hdmi cable with a composite cable and have had no more problems.
I have heard that the current channel issues are temporary so we plan to stay with AT&T.
For the most part I think I could live without cable, which would save us money, but DH needs all his sports channels so we'll always have cable!
Comcast has monopolized our area as well.
We have the HD package (on one TV), HBO but that's the only movie network (ie we don't have Cinemax, Starz, etc), DVR (on 3 TVs), and the sports package.
With that and high speed internet, our bill is about $115 per month. We don't have any complaints, but I know a lot of people don't like Comcast.

In light of the recent AT&T issues with pulling Food Network, HGTV, DIY Network and GAC, we want to switch tv (and internet - we bundle) providers. We've been less than thrilled with AT&T anyhow, and this latest debacle is the last straw. Before we moved to the east coast, we had Cox and it was much better, but there's no Cox here.
I don't want to get service from another crappy company, so I'm looking for reviews from trustworthy people. What tv provider do you use and how happy with it are you? If you don't mind sharing, could you also tell me if you have DVR, how many channels, and what your monthly price is?
We had Cox in the midwest with more channels than I can count and wireless internet for $100/month, no contract. We now have AT&T U-verse (the U200 package with DVR) with wireless internet on their promotional period for $115 after taxes. It will go up $25/month after the promo period.
