I guess this could also be posted in Wellness (feel free to move it), but I'm curious to see how many bees use condoms vs. the pill, etc. DH and I are pre-TTC... emphasis on the PRE, haha. He wants a fool-proof method, and I'm sick of hormonal BC (I'm ready to TTC ;) Anyway, specify if you're married and thinking of TTC in the next year or so. Also, why you use the BC you do. Thanks!
Just switched from the pill to nuvaring. So far so good, not taking a pill every night is making me paranoid but it is more foolproof. I had a tendency to pass out on the couch and take it 3 hrs late.
ETA: Married, not TTC for a few years
We use condoms AND the pill - no babies here please!
I have been on Loestrin 24 cause that's what the dr gave me to start out with and it's worked great, until last month or so when I had some breakthrough (sry TMI!) and he told me to try LoLoestrin instead. So far so good!
I've been taking the BCP for 6.5 years now and no complaints. We're getting married this June, but probably won't be TTC for another 2-3 years.
I have been taking Depo for almost 5 years. It has been great, no periods! But there are other things that are not so great...like the weight gain. I am actually going to let my shot run out in Feb. but I am not sure what we will do then...I will be watching this thread for ideas.
I'm condoms and prayers only as I eventually got migraines from hormonal birth control. We aren't currently trying to conceive.
Before we were married, husband and I were adamanat we did NOT want to have kids before the wedding. So I was on the pill, plus we used condoms AND VCF, (Vaginal Contraceptive Film). Bad thing about VCF is that it needs to be inserted at least 15 minutes before intercourse, so if you are fond of "surprise attacks" (so-to-speak!) it may not be for you. It also contains nonoxonyl 9 (sp?), which can cause irritation in some people, (I've been using it for several years with no problems for either of us).
Now that we are married and planning to start TTC soon, I am off the pill and we just do the condoms/VCF. I've also been charting. Because of that, I think we could probably drop at least the VCF, but hubby is a touch paranoid about it, so we still double-up for now.
Condoms only for now, though once I lose some more weight I'd really like to get an IUD because we're not planning for kids until at least 3 years from now - hopefully more like 4-5.
I was on the pill 2 years ago, but I developed blood clots in my lungs (eik, scary!) as a result of that plus some other factors so I'm pretty much banned from any kind of hormonal contraceptive for life.
we always used condoms only. I've never been on the pill or any other type of hormonal contraptive.
We just moved to condoms only. I've been on the pill for about 10 years, and I was starting to get freaked out about all the hormones in my system, so we decided I could go off it after we got married. We aren't planning on kids for 2-3 years.
When I was on the pill we'd use condoms sometimes or pull-out.
We use fertility awareness. I've never taken hormonal BC because of health concerns, and IUDs are pretty darn unappealing! I love that FAM is free, doesn't affect my mood or body, and that it's given me a lot of awareness and knowledge of my body. Works perfectly for us. We don't plan on conceiving for several years.
@Catherine: Just curious... what are you planning to use after you're married? I'm in a similar situation, just sick of all of the hormones and want something non-hormonal. But DH is worried about condoms only (what if they break..)
I've been on the pill for approx. 9 years with sporadic breaks.
The first Pill I went on (alesse) made me a 3 headed psycho bitch. So I had to switch that up and now I'm on what's called Select 35. I've never heard of it before, some pharmacies I've gone to haven't heard of it before, but it REALLY works for me.
Hopefully though, I'll be off it in a few months.
I'm married and we plan on TTC early - mid next year.
We are using just Mirena IUD- we are married.
Meeting with our high risk OB next month to see about TTC for one last baby *fingers crossed* we get the OK :)
I'm on the pill for both BC and treating my extremely heavy/painful periods. Unfortunately the side effects have been horrendous. I'm looking into trying to get a Mirena. I'm hoping that the lower hormone dose will take care of the period misery but won't screw with me the way pills do.
@Aure: Oh, I totally forgot to mention the pain. I hear ya! It'll be interesting (and scary) to see if that all comes back once I'm off the pill....
@MCC919: We're just using condoms now. And keeping our fingers crossed! (we got married this past July)
I was on Yasmin since I was like 16, then I got switched to the generic version and I felt like crap all the time. I decided to get off the pill and I immediately felt better. Now it's condoms for us.. we never had one break or anything.
When we first started having sex (my fiance was my first), I got on the pill, and we also used condoms. And then we just used the pill. But I had way to many problems with it, so I eventually stopped taking it. Now, we just use condoms. I have also just started doing FAM as well, but my cycles are really irregular (I basically skipped a month), so it will be a while before I choose to rely on that as a sole means of birth control. Even then, my fiance may not be comfortable with that, so we will probably still use condoms just to be safe.
We are not married (obviously), and definitely not TTC.
I'm currently off BC as we're expecting our first baby (it was planned!) but I just thought I'd chime in and say that I used the depo shot for years and LOVED it. I had been on the pill for many years before that but didn't like having bigger boobs or some of the other side effects that came with the pill. I may have been one of the lucky ones, but I had nothing but a positive experience on depo - I never gained weight, in fact, I lost weight on it and definitely wasn't trying as I'm thin to begin with, and had no period after the first shot, which also meant no PMS or anything of the sort. My hormones felt completely in check and I loved that I only had to worry about it once every 12 weeks. I was on it for 5 years and absolutely loved it. Once we're done having kids, I'll probably go back on it.
@.twist.: I'm hoping the Mirena can manage it or I'll be stuck with the pill gaining weight, having no sex drive and feeling nauseous all of the time. Unfortunately if I don't use some sort of hormonal BC I'll miss a minimum of two work days a month throwing up and unable to get out of bed. It's the lesser of two evils. :(
i'm really happy with my implanon. no weight gain. super light periods. no spotting.
@Aure: Mirena... is that the inserted ring? I'm unnecessarily scared of them/ don't trust them. We're practically in the same boat though. Throw up all day or no sex drive, etc. I hope you find a solution!
@.twist.: Mirena is the IUD with hormones. Paraguard is the copper, non-hormonal IUD but it causes heavier periods (yeah right) and Nuvaring is the ring you're referring to.
I think more women should give the Nuvaring a shot. I know it seems kind of weird/different from what you're used to, but it's really been awesome for me. I took BC pills throughout college/mid 20s but often had problems with nausea, especially when starting a new pack. I'm also not the best about remembering to take things at the same time every day so that made me freak out sometimes! The ring is a much lower dose of hormones and I haven't had any side effects at all. And less room for error so I don't have to freak out. win-win
@.twist.: I had originally said "Hell no" when they were first suggested to me but the more research I've done the more it seems like Mirena might be my only hope for a semi-normal life.
@Aure: Hm. Interesting. I'm going to have to look into it and take them a little more seriously. I'd love to get off the pill....
I have Mirena and I love it! It is a tad painful at first but I have always had bad cramps so it wasn't horrible. Anyone thinking of getting it should have their doctor give them a mild sedative an hour before. I did and had it implanted and went home and slept the rest of the day andI think for me it really helped with the pain. It's so nice to not worry and stress over the pill (I would always forget to take mine) my FI also loves not having to remind me to take my pill lol!
I'm on the mini-pill. I have to be on hormonal contraceptives to control my endo, so going au naturel or using condoms is not an option. Plus I love not having periods, and haven't really had any side effects (the only method I've had side effects that didn't settle was the injection, which I hated and wouldn't go on again unless I had no choice).
We don't double-up with condoms; I'm super-careful with my pill, and for me, condoms massively reduce pleasure and sensation; I've only ever used them when single, or at the start of a new relationship.
Condoms. Withdrawal when we forget. We forget about 50% of the time. Sadly, 50% is us doing better than previously...(sigh)
Are you TTC?.. Just that the withdrawal method is not a method of contraception; my friend got pregnant doing this and had to have an abortion.
@barbie86: the withdrawal method is a method of birth control as long as it is practiced in the correct manner by both parties. Your partner has to have a lot of control, but it works. There is no semen in precum so the only way withdrawal method doesnt work is if the man doesnt withdraw aka Operator Error.
I have been on the patch and Nuvaring. I do recommend them even though I had not so great experiences with them sinply because I am small and the dosages made me more prone to yeast infections.
We are now using withdrawl.
I use the copper IUD which is non hormonal and its the best move I ever made, not one complaint. I cannot wait to ttc which should be about a two years from now. Very excited! Until then I'll stay on the IUD.
I've been on the pill for a little over 3 years now. Mostly Tri-Sprintec (the generic of Ortho Tri-Cyclen), though I tried Loestrin FE for a while--it made me gain weight, so after about three months I went back to Tri-Sprintec. I haven't had any serious side effects, though sex drive has been a problem. I suspect the BC has something to do with it, but since we're definitely not TTC and FI doesn't like condoms, I can't really go off hormones right now to find out for sure.
@claireos: Condoms. Withdrawal when we forget. We forget about 50% of the time. Sadly, 50% is us doing better than previously...(sigh)
lol...no offense, but how do you FORGET? Geniunely curious, not mocking at all. My husband and I do NOT have sex without a condom, and we've never once forgotten.
I am so used to keeping the box in the nightstand, that on our honeymoon, we left the box in the nightstand when we left the cruise ship. Got to the hotel and....no condoms! I bet the next couple to have the room was surprised, (and it was a fairly new box, too! Dang!). Luckily, the land portion of the cruise was only a couple nights, so we just did *ahem* other things instead, (because everything is more expensive in Alaska and we didn't want to spend our cash on more condoms! lol).
