One of the things I am looking forward to the most in planning is cake tasting! I am plain and am doing the big tier as vanilla, but I am thinking of adding in at least one more fun flavor. I love hearing what has been popular at others weddings. What flavors did you have? Did they go over well with the guests? Any comments on a unique flavor that you'd liek to share with the hive?
I think we're going to be doing half mexican chocolate and half banana. I know, banana is pretty weird, but it was one of the few details that my fiance was really excited about. So, if it gets some enthusiasm out of him about wedding planning, he can have as much banana cake as he wants.
Banana is something different, but sounds so delicious! I'd love to hear how it turns out!
We're having a white cake with two different fillings. Two layers will have fudge and two layers will have cannoli filling. It's soooo delicious.
I'm not a huge cake fan, so I let the FH make the call on that. We wound up going boring. White for the traditional tiered cake to feed about half the guests, and chocolate cupcakes for the balance. Lots of kiddos at the wedding, so we're hoping the cupcakes will make them happy!
We're not sure yet, but a lemon cake with raspberry or strawberry filling sounds looovely.
Probably a layer of chocolate and a layer of vanilla, but I think we're both seriously hoping we can do banana. We have enough guests that three tiers should be no problem...really simple, I guess, but so yummy.
Oh how I wish we could have done banana cake!!! We're doing Italian rum cake , it's REALLY good.
All I know is it will have fondant on the outside! I am a fondant girl. Love its ability to become anything you imagine. I love the creatiity of a fondant cake. When it comes time for cake testing, T will love to sample. He's one of those guys who can eat and eat and never gain a darn pound! I call it his man-tabolism. lol!![]()
As a wedding guest, there's nothing better imho than vanilla or almond cake. I love raspberry filling inbetween. And I enjoy the groom's cake and all it's chocolate gooey goodness!
Oooh! These cakes all sound so yummy! I am really struggling on what to do. My FI is allergic to Dairy, Eggs, and nuts, so I have to be really carefull what I choose. There is a place here in Portland, OR that sells vegan cakes, but they are super expensive and I'm not sure how much decorating they are capeable of.
We are having a croquembouche. We know that it might not be to everyone's taste, but we are also having a dessert buffet with all kinds of tasty treats so everyone will have something sweet to eat.
Ice Cream Cake!!! We're doing something for a 'show' cake, but we won't eat or serve that one, just for photos and stuff, but our ice cream cake will be mint chip!!
We had 4 tiers, each a different flavor. So, (in order of largest to smallest tier) we had tirimisu, chocolate ganache, cheesecake, and some sort of white cake with a raspberry filling...all quite delish!
there was no option for yellow cake, which is my favorite. we are having our cake tastings this weekend, so i'll be able to update everyone in a few days.
@ Bellenga: I am totally doing fondant as well. I think they are so clean cut and beautiful!
@ Bloosm: I LOVE funfetti! We had funfetti at my engagement party. I never even thought of it for the weddign cake, such a great idea!
@ bulldoggrl: Ice cream cake is such a fun idea! I feel like my fiance wold be all over that!
@ Lindsy, I can't wait to hear how the tasting goes!
I made my own cake so I kept it relatively simple. Three tiers all the same. Yellow cake soaked in lemon syrup, then a raspberry and buttercream filing and everything frosted in vanilla buttercream. It was great, if i do say so myself and almost the entire cake was gone before the end of the reception and there were only 80 people there! Thank goodness my mom rescued 2 pieces and put them in the freezer.
We're planning on doing multiple cakes, ala Mrs. Gummi Bear. Therefore, multiple flavors! There's something for everyone, and I'll be happy with my sugar high. Our flavors plan to be: black forest, strawberry cream, lemon raspberry, red velvet, carrot, and nutella (chocolate hazelnut). So excited!
I would love to do an ice cream cake with mint chocolate chip...that would be soooo yummy.
@ Springroll - that's exactly like ours! Three layered Marble cake. Our venue makes basic cakes for $1.25 a slice.. One of my budgeted areas :)
The brides cake was spice cake with hazelnut ganche filling and a cream cheese buttercream frosting with chocolate fondant accents.
The grooms cake was a chocolate chocolate chip with chocolate buttercream frosting and filling and choclate ganache dripped down the side. The top had chocolate shavings and a cocoa butter monogram painted on it.
Much of my family is from the Keys, and my favorite dessert is key lime pie, so my baker did a key lime cake with a key lime gel layer. It was amazing and a huge hit!

Just found out last night that FI wants lemon with raspberry filling and buttercream frosting. I want chocolate!
I would love to have multiple cakes versus having a three tier cake. I will probably go crazy over different flavors and types of frosting for each cake. So far the following flavors/types of cake spark my interest: strawberry shortcake, red velvet, coconut, lemon, and most likely traditional vanilla.
Our bottom 2 layers will be lemon silk with raspberry filling and cherry amaretto with cherry filling.
Oh, and buttercream icing all the way! I am very anti-fondant and so is my FI
This post is giving me ideas I hadn't even thought of! The S'mores cupcakes sound delicious! I've never had key ime pie, but I am going to have to try it!
In addition to a chocolate/ vanilla wedding cake, we are having a small groom's cake made out of FRUITCAKE. Yes, you read that right-- fruitcake! That's the tradition in South Africa where my mom's side of the family is from. I believe it is also traditional in commonwealth countries like Australia, NZ and UK as well.
I promise it will not taste like those nasty, dry fruitcakes with plastic-tasting fruits that are the butt of endless Christmas jokes. The fruit is freshly candied and the cake has a lot of alcohol to make it moist and yummy!
We are hoping to set up our cake appt. soon! How far in advance did you set up yours? We'll probably have ours at about the one year point.
We had three flavors: lemon poundcake with fresh raspberry filling and wildberry buttercream, italian creme cake with chocolate mousse and fresh raspberry filling with whitechocolate buttercream, and chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and fresh raspberry filling with white chocolate buttercream. The lady who made our cake was AMAZING!
Yellow, with chocolate fudge icing, like on the Duncan Hines box- FI's fave! Good and old-fashioned.
I'm making 3 small cakes.
Matcha green tea cake with vanilla icing
Lemon cake with white chocolate icing
Vegan red velvet cake with vanilla icing.
YUMMMY I l0ove cake posts
we had chocolate with chocolate buttercream and chocolate filling. then white with strawberry mousse and vanilla buttercream. then carrot with apricot mousse filling (weird, but good, i promise) and cream cheese buttercream.
mmmm.
We're getting our cakes from the local bakery that is SOOO good! It is the food item I'm most excited about. Mary's goodies are legendary.
Our cutting cake and one sheet cake will be chocolate with fresh raspberries and creamcheese frosting and the other sheet cake will be peach-poppyseed, presumably also with creamcheese frosting. We'll also be getting 10 peach pies.
I know you typically would get fewer servings of dessert than you have guests because not everyone eats it, but with Mary's I know we can get tons and it will all be wiped out!
I would like to if our baker can do it, have a bavarian cheesecake filling. We had this at a bridal show and it was A-MAZING! FI loves cheesecake....his mom is having a friend make his groom's cake and I don't know what she will do, so I don't mind giving up my cake for some tasty cheescake filling. :) If she can't do it...then maybe marble with like a raspberry filling. Mmmm. Love raspberry filling.
