my FI told me that for his first wedding, they put toilet paper on the registry. People bought toilet paper AND a side gift, so they didn't have to buy TP for like a year. I'm not sure how I feel about it, since he wants to do it again for ours, but I imagine for a baby registry, you can put a pack of diapers on the registry, and people will buy you a pack on top of whatever gift they buy.
We haven't started ours yet, but I'm going to put everything I can on it including furniture, stroller, car seat, etc. I figure it's a nice way to have an organized list for myself to check what I have and what I still need and it's a quick way to see how much money you might need to spend, lol. Plus, I'm hoping places have completion programs that offer discounts like they do for weddings, so if I dont' get some of the big ticket items for our shower, I can hopefully get them once the baby is born (unless we need it before like a car seat).
I am not pregnant, but having fun helping plan a shower for my FSIL! I just printed out her registry yesterday and she included everything on it. Like the previous post said, it is a nice way to stay organized. Also, I have heard some places let you purchase items that were not bought off the registry with a discount. It may not be much, but it is something!
I've also heard that for all the stuff you don't receive on your registry, most places will give you a discount if you decide you want to purchase them later.
Great Post! I was wondering all this stuff too! Can't wait to hear all the answers.
Our plan is to do a BUNCH of research on most reviewable items (like car seat, stroller, cribs, etc. but also bottles, breast pumps, & diaper bins), then register for our picks. We're leaving clothing off the list (since I figure many will go this route anyway & pick something cute or personal to us), & sticking with the necessities, both big ticket items as well as every day stuff, like diapers & such.
@Lillindy, @SandraCarol, @bunnyfoofoo: which registries have the discount feature?
Again, thanks for posting!
@ms.pascua: I know Babysrus has a completion program where you receive a coupon certificate to be used on remaining registry items. I think they give you 12months after the due date? I am not a hundred percent sure though. I know there are restrictions, but it is definitely a nice bonus!
@SandraCarol: Thanks! We'll definitely look at what they've got.
@ms.pascua: I might be incorrect, but I think Buy Buy Baby also offers the completion discount.
Also, Target sent me a 10% off completion coupon 2 weeks before my due date. We didn't have a shower, so we just went shopping when i got the coupon so we had everything before the baby came.
We put everything on it. I figure if folks wanted to go in together to buy a more expensive item, that would be great. We'll just buy whatever we don't get. And it is very helpful to keep track of what you have/need (believe me, with baby brain I need all the help I can get). One thing I'm surprised about is that I didn't get ANY diapers at my first shower. My second/last shower is next weekend. A friend with a 3 month old told me that her husband had a guys' Pampers Party where they basically got together for a beer-drinkin' man party but each guy brought a pack of diapers. She still hasn't had to buy any...
both buybuybaby and target (i have registered at both) have the competion discount so it is worth looking into for those who havent.
i put everything on my registry, from diapers and wipes, to breast pumps and bottles, to clothes and onesies...i didnt hesitate to put everything on there to accommodate everyone's budgets. i put toys, car seat mirrors, crib and bassinet sheets, bouncer seats, etc.
@MrsH1010: Thanks for the confirmation on the completion discounts!
Target, here I come!

I've been wondering about what types of items to put on our registry. I'm talking more about what are you purchasing yourselves and what are you putting on the registry. I'm thinking we should purchase our own stroller/car seat system because they are expensive items. I also feel silly buying stuff now because I know we will have showers and so I may be buying things that we will receive as gifts later.
