We did dueling buffets of mexican and asian food. It was pretty incredible. lol
It wasn't a part of our buffet, but for our cocktail hour we had a popcorn machine!
BBQ. I don't think that's traditional (at least in northern CA where I'm from). I've never been to a wedding that had BBQ.
BACON BAR!!!
Actually... most likely we wont because it would be pretty expensive the way we would have to do it... but if we could, I would have done it in a heartbeat! I am still planning it in hopes we find a way though. lol
We had a nice mix of Chinese food and more American food. I substituted almost everything on my caterer's Asian Station menu because it was so "americanized" Chinese food. My caterers were cool enough to not blink a eye at my more traditional recipes.
We also had Buffalo wings as the appetizer as a nod to my husband's hometown and where we met!
Our vegetarian entree/food station is something I'd never heard of - it's mushroom-filled beggar's purse pasta in a carrot/white wine reduction. I tried it at the tasting and it was AMAZING. Really unique. I know it sounds like it might not be that good, but it really was. (I'm vegetarian, so it was important to me that the veggie option be GOOD.)
We're having butlered grilled gruyere cheese with tomato soup during cocktail hour!
we're having.... goat. i have accepted that it is a cultural difference & totally normal for FI's family, but it's still icky to me! but, we embrace both our cultures and they will be represented in our buffet- even if it means one of meat options is goat=)
the one thing i REALLY want, as far as the food goes, is a s'mores station! and it WILL happen, no matter what it takes! we're getting married at a camp, it only seems right=)
We're just doing traditional food, unfortunately.
I would have LOVED to do Ethiopian cuisine, there's a local Ethiopian restaurant (which also happens to be my all-time favorite restaurant) that has catering available.
But fiance's side of the family, especially his mom's side, are not very adventurous when it comes to food. They would either starve or end up ordering pizza.
Ethiopian food:

We're having BBQ chicken and ribs catered, but I'll also be serving Laotian sides... sticky rice, spicy papaya salad, and roasted tomato hot sauce.
You know, if I wasnt worried about my guests looking down on the idea, i think it would be fun to have a pizza buffet! I could hire those pple who come in trucks and set up a grill outside and custom make pizzas...like pizza catering :-D I wonder if that is unheard of...
We had a mac n cheese bar with all kinds of toppings. It was a huge hit with our guests!
the dinner is halibut and prime rib but for apps, i want to do something to reflect japanese and korean culture. i'm thinking korean tacos and yakitori....
Were going to have a taco bar (chicken and steak) With ALL the toppings! Im so excited I LOVE mexican food!
@abbyful: YUM! We thought about doing Ethiopian food too, but decided it was a little too different. Ethiopian restaurants are some of our favorites, but we decided we would like to have people eat with silverware at our wedding in their nice clothes. :)
We are going to do our rehearsal dinner at our favorite Ethiopian place, though!!
The wedding will be a vegetarian buffet; FI & I are both vegetarians. Thankfully no one is too dramatic about our meatless reception.. though I think we have a friend who's bringing his own bacon. lol.
My FI and I both grew up in Albania, so our entire menu is Albanian. Then again, we're self catering (the family), so that does make menu choices a lot more vast. We're also vegetarian, so that complicates matters. :)
For cocktail hour we're serving stuffed grape leaves, tiny spinach cheese pockets, bruchetta, and mini pizzas.
For dinner we have a greek salad and a cabbage lemon salad, a traditional bean soup, stuffed peppers and tomatoes, and two types of pasta (cream and arabiata).
Desserts we're not doing Albanian - just three types of cupcakes and a cream puff tower, as well as an international cookie bar (50 different types of cookies from all over the world), which double as favors (we've got bags for the cookies to take home).
@mh.albania , I was thinking about doing my own catering because Im skeptical I can find a caterer that would know how to make Serbian Food (Also greek salad, lamb, prosciutto, russian salad, sarma, pita *like spanikopita, etc...), and I wanna mix american food in with that...err...italian american i think would go well... But then I was thinking, Isn't it the caterer that provides all 175 place settings, and sets everything up? How is your family planning on doing that part? If I could still find someone to do that, then self-catering would be awesome.
Btw guys, all this food sounds soo good lol:) and @MsPanda ....Genius! lol..hmm, how bout a wedding with a taco bar AND a bacon bar AND an open bar...that would be the dream wedding hehe:)
we are having a ol'southern bbq buffet with mac and cheese, collards and cornbread...and when the time is right we will bust out a late-night hot dog stand!

Hi Bees,
I'm looking into my catering options and think i would like to do something unique! My FI is from Serbia and I am from the U.S. so I think I want to do half serbian half....something unique! for a buffet! (afternoon wedding).
What kinds of foods have you served/are planning to serve that are untraditional or unique? Maybe they will inspire me:)
