Yay, doctorgirl! You're getting "baby-ready!" I take a Centrum women's vitamin right now. Is there a brand or type that is better than others?
Often when we tell people to take a vitamin, we point them towards Centrum... so I think that's a good choice.
Vitamins and supplements are not regulated in the same way as drugs, so it is very difficult to assure that you are getting what the bottle says you are getting. Centrum is one that I trust.
Here in Seattle, almost everyone takes Vitamin D. Our winters are just too gloomy to get Vitamin D from the sun!
I keep meaning to start taking a mult-vitamin, but I can never stick with it. (They give me heartburn). My sister, who is much more diligent about this stuff, takes a multi-vitamin, calcium and Vitamin D AND folic acid.
what does folic acid do? right now i'm taking one a day womens but i know nothing about vitamins!
Mornings : Magnesium, Calicum Citrate, CoQ10, Tyrosine, Ester C, Vitamin D3, Carotenoids complex, CALA, 5-htp, Whey
Mid-Day : Quericin (sp), Reversestol (also spelled wrong), Soy isoflavones, DHEA, Whey
Evening: Ester C, Tyrosine, Omega 3, Vit. E, B-complex, Selenium, Zinc, 5-htp, Whey
May seem like a lot, but I am older than most on this board. Plus I haven't had a cold or flu in over 10myears and haven't taken a prescription med in almost as long.
Pre-natal multi-vitamin, fish oil for omega 3s, and calcium.
I take a prenatal generic form and the Align probiotic for my digestive system. The probiotic has worked wonders for me! The only supplement I take if its even that is Fibersure powder sprinkled a couple times a day in some OJ or something. Can't taste it! I hate medicine by the way and it takes every ounce of discipline I got to take it everyday!
i am taking prenatals from Costco. i'm afraid to get my labs done. i'll probably need to take cholesterol meds with the way i'm eating.
I take a multi-vitamin (the version for women) and fish oil. I find when I stop taking fish oil, my joints starting creaking!
I always get on kicks where I am really good about taking a multi-vitamin and then I fall out of the habit....bah!!!
Usually in the summer I eat a lot better..more fruits and veggies....and less on the go than during the school year
Once school starts I tend to slip out of my healthy eating and try to take a multivitamin. In the winter I take my vitamins more diligently as well as acidphilus, echincea, and depeding on the vitamin I am on I sometimes have to add in Vit D and Calcium to meet the values that I need, but most of the time my vitamin covers those,(depends on who did the shopping...)
I take Swiss One 50 vitamins w/ B vitamins... this bad boy is a horse pill, but it also has twice the amount of goodness than a regular daily vitamin has. I also take fish oil and a natural supplement to help with water retention.
@mrscingle- folic acid is to prevent neural tube defects in fetuses. Now that cereals are supplemented with folic acid, the incidence of spina bifida has gone way, way down.
I'm PCOS, so although I dont want kids yet I do need to get myself ready for when I am "ready". I am taking a pre-natal, fish oils, and vitamin E. As well as watching what I eat. My husband and I want to start trying at the end of this year.
I have a bottle of Women's one-a-day but I never remember to take it. It's funny because I can remember to give my cat her pills twice a day!
I take the Kirkland/CostCo brand super multi-vitamins (can't recall the name). B/c of a chronic condition I have, I also supplement with extra Folic Acid and B-complex. I had a very serious eye injury last year, and my doctor told me to take flax seed oil to help with tears. I've been taking it since, and I think it's actually improved my complexion also.
I take fish oil and calcium. Is there any benefit to taking prenatal viatmins even if you're not trying for a baby? I think some of my friends take them to make their hair grow.
I don't regularly take them, but I have vitamin e complex and fish oil and also a multi vitamin. I have like 5 or so more bottles of random vitamins, but I haven't been taking them.
I am so confused about vitamins - if I take my multi-vitamin, can I still take my vitamin E complex too ... what about fish oil?
i take Centrum (just the regular one) and cod liver oil (not a capsule, but the actual liquid in a bottle).
my sinuses don't act up as much since i started taking the cod liver oil, and my hair / nails are stronger & glossier when i take Centrum too!
The questions you all are asking are exactly what make supplements so tricky.
Prenatal vitamins are fine, even if you're not planning to become pregnant. I hear they are great for hair and nails. I'll tell you soon, since I just bought some at Costco yesterday!
So I was looking at the ingredient list and RDA percentages on the bottle. It gives 100% of daily vitamin D... but I also take a daily D supplement (because I live in Seattle!). The problem is that the prenatal doesn't have enough Calcium, but if I take the Calcium + D, I'm overdoing the D.
In my case, and in talking to my physician, the extra D isn't going to hurt, especially because of the environment where I live (no sun=no D).
If you take too much fish oil, you can experience an anti-coagulant side effect... and if you take too much Vitamin A you can get toxicity (never eat a polar bear liver-- it'll kill you with Vitamin A toxicity!)
I'm trained in medicine, and I still find the world of supplements to be overwhelming at times! If in doubt, talk to your provider :)
I have to be the bearer of bad news, but your body isn't really processing the Centrum (or most synthetically created multis). Organic supplements cost more, but are far more effective, because of something called bioavailability. Here's a good test to see if your multi is being absorbed in your body - drop a multi into a glass of warm water. The multi should dissolve and bond with the water. If it dissolves into a pile of sand at the bottom of the glass, you're probably just paying money to pee the stuff out.
I take Nutrilite Double X twice a day - 3 pills each time - a phytonutrient, multivitamin, and multimineral. The phytonutrient is essentially the stuff in plants that your body needs to process the nutrients from the vitamins. When I take these twice a day, I'm well-rested on 4 hours of sleep.
I also take an omega 3 for brain and heart health, vitamin C (which aids in collagen production!!) and a supplement for hair, skin and nails.
Also about 2 months ago I added a skin supplement by clear.now, sort of like a much better pro activ, anyway it's a chewable supplement and my adult acne is like 75% better.
I'm a distributor of Nutrilite products, so I'm biased, but... we're endorsed by Olympic athletes and I know how much these vitamins have changed my energy level, physically and mentally!! If any of you want more info, message me...
I take prenatals from Trader Joes. My hair and nails have been growing like CRAZY since Ive started...and I feel so much better!@
@Mrsmike- we have alot of studies on Centrum. It's why many physicians recommend it as a brand where we know exactly what people are getting when they take it. We certainly can't vouch for other brands that studies haven't been done on.
Dissolving in water is not a good test, because the environment of the stomach is a very very low pH... not at all like water. I just don't want people to get the wrong idea. I'm glad you believe in your product, and it may be really great, but it's definitely something I'd want to see studies on before I took it-- the kind of studies that have already been done on Centrum.
I've been taking a pre-natal for about a month because I heard it was good for hair and nails. (Actually - funny story - I saw a vitamin labeled for hair and nails and compared the ingredients to the pre-natal one and they were exactly the same, in the same amount, but the "beauty" one was like three dollars more expensive. Although I did have to explain to FI why I'm taking pre-natal since we're def. not trying right now!) I have def. noticed a difference in my hair already. It seems a lot softer, and somehow less frizzy. I wish I would have discovered this earlier!
I also take iron, since I can tell I feel generally crappy without it - I'm boarder line anemic. I know I should take calcium, but i can't stand taking pills that aren't coated or chewable and most calcium pills I've tried are big and chalky (and I hate the taste of those chocolate chews, they don't taste like chocolate at all!). This is why I take flinstones gummy's for my multi :)
Any recommendations for a calcium pill that I can swallow?
@doctorgirl - if you do want to read up, they have been around for 70+ years and do extensive clinical trials, here's a link to some info - http://www.nutrilite.com/en-us/Science/NHI/BestOfScience/clinicals.aspx?
Myself and some of my clients swear by vitamin B shots right around that time of the month.
My OBGYN instructed me that a multi-vitamin with 100% of your daily folic acid is great for prenatal preparation. One-a-day is what I've been taking, as it has the full 100%.
I take a multi for women, Vitamin C, and Biotin (for my thin hair)
@mrsmike- thanks for the link. I really don't trust industry research. I prefer peer-reviewed scientific journals. I'm sure you can understand my skepticism given my training. I kind of see the world through my medical training lens. :)
I take the pre-natal because I have been advised that you should take one for six months before trying to get pregnant, and we're going to start trying on our wedding night! The nail thing is a bonus. :-)
I am going to start taking a combo of Super B Complex and Biotin because I heard it works wonders for hair, nails, and most importantly, WEIGHT MANAGEMENT! Anyone know anything about these two vitamins?

Just curious what a healthy population of young women (and men) such as the population here might be taking to supplement the diet.
Do you take vitamins or supplements? Do you feel like they are necessary or not?
I'm thinking about adding a pre-natal vitamin to my regimen ;)
