A combination of those. Price was a big factor, but the guy I ended up with also had a ton of referrals from other brides and he does a gazillion events a year. I think even more than those things though was personality. He was really nice and very flexible and he completely won us over.
Familiarity with the venue was so important to us. We have several rooms for various elements of the ceremony (first dance, dinner, reception, introductions), and we heard horror stories of DJs showing up with one set of equipment and running all over the place among the guests trying to lug it from one room to the other. Our DJ had separate equipment for every room.
He also emphasized his setup: speakers on either side of dance floor, no wires, very symmetrical and organized.
He had experience and a ton of good reviews. Price was on the high end, but worth it for us.
Venues I can handle, photographers I can do, caterers are awesome and the cake? No sweat. But for SOME REASON I'm having a total mental block against finding a DJ. It's seriously making me anxious to even start looking!
