FH and I have never been on a cruise before but we are considering one for our honeymoon. The only thing holding us back is the alcohol. Have you been and what was your tab? I guess we are heavy drinkers (in real life no, but on vacation, yes!) . I don't see myself turning down the margaritas they are walking around with trying to sell :)
Oh, good question! DH and I are going on a cruise in June and were wondering the same thing!
We just cruised for the first time for our honeymoon on Royal Caribbean--I don't know what our alcohol tab was because there was other stuff added in...but the drinks on the cruise were no more expensive than what you would pay at a bar...beers were about $4, and mixed drinks were between $6-10 a piece. The mixed drinks were of good quality too, meaning they weren't weak or watered down. Sodas were $2.25 a piece. Bottled Evian was $4.25, they also had Perrier but I don't know how much that was. I can't comment on wine, but I know from the others sitting at my table that it was worth it to buy the wine package if you were going to drink wine vs paying per glass. I think we drank 1-3 drinks a piece per day, so I would say $20-$30 per day on alcohol. We got two tips from veteran cruisers that really helped us:
1. Plan to spend 1/2 what you paid for the cruise in excursions, drinks, etc. Our cruise was $2000 for 9 days and we spent about $800 for all of the "extras" which included a couples massage and an excursion in every port.
2. Bring cash to pay down your balance before they charge your card. We linked our room to our credit card, at the end of the cruise we got a "bill", we chose to pay for more than 1/2 of it in cash at customer relations desk with money that we got from the wedding...the rest of it went on the credit card...when the bill came last week, I was much happier to see a $400 balance vs an $800 balance.
Hope that helps! HAVE FUN =)
I have been on several, and like you I drink more than normal because it is vacation! Each time I spent the equivilant of the cost of 1 persons trip fare (airfare & cruise). That is the bill for 2 people drinking, but it adds up quick as the drinks are not cheap! It's definitely a fun time though! An all-inclusive resort might give you more bang for your buck, but then you lose the variety of seeing different places.
We are going on a cruise in 12 days (!!!!!) and part of our plan is to sneak alcohol on board. We are going to fill a listerine bottle with either vodka or rum. Plus on most cruise lines (we are going on Carnival) you can each bring 1 bottle of wine. You can drink it in your room but if you want to have it with dinner there is a $15 corkage fee. Even though we're sneaking some alcohol on we are still going to buy some drinks, just dont want to have a ridiculously high bill. I'll let you know what we spend when we get back!
I agree @marylandnurse: though - you are supposed to bring about 1/2 what you paid for the cruise. Our cruise was $550pp so we are going to be bringing about $800. We know we probably won't spend that much (we arent doing any excursions through the Cruise line) but we just want to be safe!
ETA - we did an all inclusive for our honeymoon and I think a cruise is a much better option. There is just so much to see/do when you are on a cruise whereas an all inclusive can get old after about 4 days. It started to feel like adult summer camp!
Thanks for the tips. We were reading about all the ways to sneak alcohol on board :)
I wouldn't mind $1000 in drinks because really the cruise is cheaper so $1000 plus $2,000 is the same as an all inclusive resort. I imagine we will drink everyday, starting around lunch, maybe taking a break here and there but we mostly find ourselves enjoying drinks daily. I just wish I could buy a drink package!
Our bill was about $500 for a 7 day cruise. We got the soda card, so that helped a bit.
@Amy43026: No honeymoon yet but on my past cruises, I've probably spent about $200 total for a 4-5 day cruise. The cocktails add up fast.
PitBullLover--I would avoid the listerine bottles, I would try something that doesn't have a bottle form to it--like a bladder -- think the inside of a Camelback or the inside of a coffee box from Dunkin Donuts. I saw lots of alcohol being confiscated at the check in, however I will not confirm or deny that the bladder worked for a certain couple traveled on our cruise ;-)
@marylandnurse: haha thanks! The box o joe bladder was the other thing we were planning on doing. I guess it's true they probably seek out bottle shaped things! DH has a camelbak for hiking but has no idea where it is so I think we'll do the coffee thing...thanks!
@marylandnurse: was your alcohol tab super high? Do you know what a wine card is? Thanks!
We just got back from our HM cruise a few weeks ago. We spent a total of $575 on board and I'd say about $450 of that was on booze. We brought 4 bottles of wine on board so that's $60 in corkage fees (we brought 1 bottle home so that was a waste of $15).
DH and I are pretty average drinkers but we had a few bad sea days so drinking wasn't really on the top of our to-do list. Our typical round set us back $18 a pop (for 2 cocktails) and we had a few nights where both of us were 6-8 deep. I'm very surprised that we didn't spend more. We didn't even really monitor our spending that closely.
if you are going Carnival- they have an option to pre-purchase bar and soad coupons for much cheaper than on board:

http://www.carnival.com/BonVoyage/AddToCart.aspx?cat=Specialty+Items&pid=500
also most places have a soft drink card that will be cheaper in the end if you even get one soda per day. And if you buy a plastic bottle, then you can sneak almost anything onto the ship. Don't forget about bottled water.
When we snuck alcohol on a cruise we just put it in water bottles... no one gave us any problems.
I found mixed drinks on the cruise to be fairly weak and had a hard time getting buzzed. I guess this is for the best though since walking was hard enough for me with the ships motion!
For a week long cruise, we probably spent about $250. But, we also only drank long islands on the boat. And we probably spent about $50 total on the islands drinking local beers
To go along with @CassidyR:
You can also call BonVoyage and order bottles of alcohol. They just dont advertise it. PM me your email address and I can send you the list of bottles they carry and their prices. I have done it several times this year on carnival.
i think our tab was $600 but that included gambling and anything else we charged to the room
i was seriously suprised at how easy it was to sneak alcohol on! i learned some tricks from my mom haha
We went on a 4 night cruse (or maybe it was a 5 night....) anyways, as well as our drinks, we charged 1 excursion and two bottles of liquor that was purchased on the boat to our room - our total was around $450 - This does not include tips. Make sure you bring cash for the tips. I know there are websites out there that tell you how much per day you should tip.
@Amy43026: We spent about $500-600 on a 7 day cruise. I'd also recommend taking the allotted 2 bottles of wine and using rum runners to "sneak" alcohol on board. If you bring a little of your own and then purchase a soda card you can make mixed drinks pretty cheaply. We also paid for all inclusive resort days on two different occasions during island stops (once in Costa Maya and once in Cozumel). For about $25-30 we could eat and drink all we wanted at a resort on the beach. Have fun!
Our total tab was abour $1000, but that includes all of our extras. I'd guess that about $500 of that was drinks. About halfway through the trip, SO got so annoyed with buying expensive drinks that when we got off on our next port, he purchased a handle of rum and used tape to holster it around his inner thigh. He walked a little funny but he got on no problem and we had that the rest of the trip, haha.
For a 7 day cruise on Carnival my fiance and I spent $250 on alcohol alone. We each brought our own bottle of wine on board (Carnival allows this), and we also pre-ordered some alcohol from Carnival that they had waiting in our room when we arrived. So we got to make our own drinks in our room and hang out on the balcony at night and relax with a drink. It was wonderful! =]
A "medium" mixed drink (read: Slurpee sized, I can only assume a "large" would be an alcoholic Big Gulp) was around $8 on our cruise. Wine prices were pretty reasonable, not much different from what I'd expect at home.
Most of our excursions included a complimentary drink, as well. DH doesn't drink alcohol and I only drink occasionally so all told I think I spent about $100 on alcoholic drinks.
We did both get the pre-paid soft drink packages though, and there were similar deals for coffee. If you're a regular coffee/soda drinker, those will pay for themselves very quickly.
Were bringing on a bottle of wine and a bottle of champagne and I'm pretty sure were going to have another bottle delivered for the honeymoon so I HOPE that cuts our price. I'm registering for alcohol drink cards and soda cards as wedding gifts as well LOL.
We are pretty big drinkers so I hope we don't come face to face with a $2000 bill =( now I'm getting nervous.
It's been a few years since I've been on a cruise, but I recall having over $150 in bar tabs for 3 days, and I swear I never got drunk! A lot of that was bottled water-which was like 4 or 5 bucks each-YIKES! Necessary because the tap water on board is about as nasty/chemically tasting as you can imagine. There were a few cocktail events where the drinks were free, like a captains reception and one of the shows had free drinks as I recall, and a carribean night. alcohol drinks were around 8 bucks, but again that was a few years ago so they might be more than that now.
My recommendation would be to designate a single bar that you will use for the entire cruise to make friends with the bartender. First night of drinking talk to them, and mention its your honeymoon/first time cruising and how excited you are. Then tip REALLY well that first night. After that we probably only paid for about half/a third of our drinks, either by getting complementary ones from the bartenders, or other "regulars" purchasing drinks for us. We still tipped well, but it was worth it.
This is what we did on our honeymoon and it worked out great!
@PitBulLover: FWIW, we've brought ours a few times in listerine bottles and nothing has ever gotten confiscated! We usually end up with a few listerine half bottles of vodka in our freezer afterward, which always makes for interesting questions when we host parties and someone goes for the ice :)
I hid little airplane bottles in my makeup bag on the last cruise I went on. In an x-ray, the bottles might just mix in with the other items in there. It honestly just wasn't the same though... sneaking away and making your own drinks in your cabin. I feel more festive getting them from the bar.. but as you've read here, that comes with a price.
Also, to keep your room charge from adding up, I would look into the service charge that they tack on per person, per day. I like to tip cash to the people I interact with (room steward, bartenders, servers) instead of get the general charge put on my bill that goes to everyone even if they don't work with you personally. You can get it taken off upon request but you have to do it before the final bill comes.
@MaraBeth: Does anyone ever question why people have huge bottles of listerine for a week vacation? lol
Waiting bee, but cruise a LOT, my tab last yr on an 8day Carnival cruise was about $400. I drink on vacation, a lot.LOL
Less than $100. We each brought on a bottle of wine and snuck on a handle of rum. We put the rum into small water bottles, which you are allowed to bring on. (I think the limit is 12, but I don't remember). We packed them on the bottom of our suitcases. The cruise was for 5 days, and I think we only bought about 6 drinks when we were by the pool and didn't want to run back to the room and just a few when we ran out of alcohol. One of the dining rooms had free soda, so we filled up big nalgene bottles with soda for mixers.
ETA: I would do research beforehand and see what is available to do at the places you're going. Almost always I was able to book excursions directly and saved a ton of money than by booking through the cruise.
Has anyone had an insane bill for drinking? I don't want to ave to worry to much bout the dins, but I don't want a $2000 bill either?
We paid for the booze package for one of us, and it was $49/day. We just agreed to drink the same thing and attempt to be discreet about it since they frowned upon double fisting and/or sharing one package. It was still expensive but we definitely got our money's worth.
@KristenGotMarried:I haven't seen a drink package, what cruise and cruise line was that on?
@Amy43026: It was with Celebrity... which I would HIGHLY recommend!!!!! Moreso than Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess... I loved Celebrity.

@KristenGotMarried:That is awesome, we are definitely looking into it! What kind of crowd on the celebrity cruise?
