just for fun. mine was by far, The Outsiders. We had to read it in the 8th grade. I totally cried at the end and really loved Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally. And then we watched the movie in class after and holy moly was it ever full of hot hollywood men who starred in that movie before they made it big! Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Cruise to name a few! I also read the book at least 5 more times and watched the movie at least 50 times after the class was over!
other books i remember reading in high school that i really enjoyed and had an impact on me were:
Catcher in the Rye
Call of the Wild
Brave New World (then on my own i later read 1984)
To Kill a Mockingbird - it is part of the reason I became a lawyer :)
@mrscheetos: I still love The Giver - my fiance has never read it, and I am angling for it to be next on his list!
Probably my favorite was actually a book from 6th grade called "The Hatchet" about a boy who becomes stranded in the wilderness following a helicopter crash and has to survive on his own. It was fun to read and the story progressed beautifully. I've gotten a copy to read to my own children.
In high school: Brave New World, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harry Potter y la Piedro Filosifal (because it's always fun to read Harry Potter for credit, even if it is in another language!)
Elementary School - The Giver and Hatchet
Middle School - The Great Gatsby, Animal Farm, and To Kill A Mockingbird
High School - Tale of Two Cities, 1984, Brave New World, and Wuthering Heights
lots of mention of The Great Gatsby. i never had to read it, but maybe i will now!
@Mrs.KMM: i recently listened to Wuthering Heights on audiobook and just couldn't get into it. it might have been the narrator's voice though, was kind of annoying.
Maya Angelou, "I know why the caged bird sings". I think we read it in year 10 (aged 14-15 years old) and I really loved it.
To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sound and the Fury and The House of the Spirits (we read a ton of Latin American literature my senior year that I loved)
ETA: Forgot about "The Things They Carried", seriously so good.
I had two. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Kindred. Our school had the author of Kindred come and speak to us after we read it.
I also really enjoyed Tess of the d'Urbervilles.
My favorite book was The Doomsday Book. I also enjoyed Jane Eyre but I had read that for fun before having to read it for school so I didn't count it.
Flowers for Algernon (although it made me cry like a baby)
I hated everything in High School... sadly. But, I did love the Scarlet Letter in Jr High! Does that count? lol
@GroovyHippieChick: OMG. I read that in Jr. High too and that will stand up as one of my all time favorite books EVER. Seriously! I was even able to be in a play for it and it was the best experience ever!
I loved reading The Hatchet
but my 2 fave books ever that we read in school were
Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry
and Where the Red Fern Grows
Elementary- The Giver (which I still ready probably every few years just because I love it so much)
Middle School- To Kill a Mocking Bird (my DH and I watched the play last year and it was phenomenal)
High School- I liked Brave New World and a Handmaidens Tail (my least favorite was Lord of the Flies!)
Catcher in the Rye, Ethan Frome, Pride and Prejudice, 1984.
In Middle School I enjoyed That Was Then This is Now, Lord of the Flies, The Giver, The Diary of Anne Frank.
The Hobbit! We read it in 8th grade I think and after I read it, I was totally hooked and read all the Lord of the Rings books
@MrsRuby: I remember Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry. I read that in Middle School and remember enjoying it. I also really enjoyed Lord of the Flies which is one I forgot but someone mentioned above.
The Great Gatsby was by far by fav too. Fitzgerald used the hotel we are staying in for the wedding as inspiration for the hotel Tom and Daisy were married in. Fun facts.
middle school- To Kill A Mockingbird
high school- Fahrenheit 451 I loved this book. It is kind of funny how the people in this book had wall sized tv's and little ear phones and people were always connected to eachother. The author wasn't really far off on how technology is today. Thankfully our firemen don't burn books and people aren't arrested for having books. Hopefully we never get to that point.
I was so pissed off when Michael Moore took the title and made it fit his garbage movie. Now when people hear the title a majority of them think of that idiot and his movie.
@Ms Hedgehog it counts because for me high school was grade 7 to grade 11! i think that overlaps with some American definitions of middle school or junior high which i didn't have.
@KatyElle: I LOVED Ethan Frome!
I also enjoyed The Great Gatsby.
I hated all of the books that they made us read in the high school I went to for grades 7-11. I still feel like because of that school, I hate a lot of books that I otherwise would have liked.
Then, I went to a different high school for grade 12 and we got to read Blindness by Jose Saramago and A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers. My eyes were opened to a world where English class didn't have to ruin books!
In university I took an English class where we read White Teeth by Zadie Smith and Arcadia by Tom Stoppard and thanks to that class, I gained two new favourite authors!
Oh man there are so many...
Catcher in the Rye, Night, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sound and the Fury, The Awakening, and Nam.
Definitely The Catcher in The Rye. I've read it so many times since high school and never get tired of it!
I also loved The Great Gatsby, Fahrenheit 451, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
@Evie19: I forgot all about The Amakening. That book was amazing!
I loved The Lord of the Flies and also A Separate Peace in sophomore year of high school. The Giver was my middle school favorite.
We and The Giver. Love Dystopian fiction still. :-) Also The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in senior AP Lit. Still don't get the literary value, but great book. Haha.
@Meowkers: Octavia Butler came and spoke to your school? I am so jealous! indredis one of my favorite books ever! I was really pumped when I scored an autographed copy at a used book sale.
As for favorite books in high school, I'd probably go with A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations. I know a lot of people don't love Dickens now, but he holds a really special place in my heart. His character portraits are pretty amazing. I also loved In Dubious Battle by Steinbeck.
