I posted asking about a potential wedding present and I was surprised how many people would prefer an impersonal registry item over something personalized. I understand registries are wish lists, things people want and hope for, researched while off-registry is a gamble, which some people are bound to screw up. And if someone screwed up, you focus on that. But…isn’t there still some small joy in an unexpected present? The surprise? Or that someone knows you well enough to get the perfect item you didn’t think about for yourself?
I absolutely get that great Aunt Edna may have picked out an ugly umbrella stand that doesn’t fit your decor/small apartment. I’m more curious about those who know and love you the best. (Even if they don’t as well as you think they do, the sentiment is so meaningful.) So, I’m curious…whether everyone’s favorite present is registry (don’t get me wrong, I do like my kitchenaid and I’m excited to try out my breadmaker!), cash, or off registry. What leaps to mind? I put a poll so people can be honest if they really just want cash. 🙂
My favorite Christmas present ever remains a tablecloth. Yes, I said tablecloth. My mom had a tablecloth with the signatures of all guests for dinner embordered in, with personal stories. Just before my grandparents passed away, she started four (with their signatures), one for each of us and my cousin. This was not something I put on a wish list but was perfect.
My favorite wedding present are the handmade caramels my DH’s friend made for our favors – a beautifully wrapped box of 8 to take away for each guest and a big bowl for folks to try. Huge hit at the wedding as we knew they would be. The friend sends a box every Christmas and birthday for my husband (although now he might have to share with his other friends now that they know of them).
