What were you MOST hoping to get from your baby registry?

If you’re planning to spend $200, get a big item rather than lots of little things. Everyone will get her little things, but she’ll probably be left hanging on the big ticket items.

If someone were going to get me a bigger item, I would want a car seat because with other big items you can often find them used on craigslist or kijiji, but car seats are (in many areas) illegal to buy used for safety reasons.

@TwoStatesBride:  I second the PP. There is actually a debate on a separate thread where a mom hoped she would have gottne bigger ticket items, so I would do that. Everyone will be getting her diapers and onsies.

Definitely get one of the absolute must-have essentials, like the car seat or the baby monitor or the breast pump (if she’s planning on returning to work and pumping). These items are not only expensive, but you HAVE to buy them before the baby comes and are often hard/dangerous to find used so she’ll definitely appreciate being able to cross that off the list!! Other stuff like strollers, pack and plays, cribs, changing tables etc. are so easy to get used … but some stuff you really need to get new. I was thrilled when my parents gave me the $300 breast pump I needed at my shower. I was not looking forward to buying that myself …

Oh! Also, as an aside — if you think she might struggle with being able to afford all the stuff she needs, you might even Craigslist some of the easy-to-buy-used stuff for her! I think the biggest pain in the ass was getting the swing, rock and play, pack n play, strollers, etc that I wanted off Craigslist. It’s such a pain to find the one you want, not too far from where you live, and priced appropriately … it took me MONTHS to accumulate that stuff. So if she’s planning on buying used and you gift her all that stuff ($200 will go a LONG WAY on Craigslist) she will probably cry tears of gratitude not just over the money saved but over the trouble avoided 🙂

I’m most hoping for the stroller because it also comes with the carseat. That’s above $200 though. Things I’m most hoping for under $200 are the pack n play and the swing.

I also say a car seat.  I feel like that is such an important item, but it is one you definitely don’t want to get second hand.

The number one things I want from my registry right now are the cloth diapering supplies! Since that may not be something she’s looking for though, I agree that the infant carseat (if on the registry) is a good idea too. A wrap-type carrier is the next thing I really want to have too so that I can wear baby around the house while doing housework and stuff (I registered for a Moby, but there are lots of options). Bassinet, crib, crib mattress, pack n play, breast pump, bottle set, or an infant snowsuit if you’re in a cold area would probably all be at the top of my list. Something that she might not be registered for but appreciate too would be a subscription for diapers and wipes to be delivered to her door every so often after baby’s arrival.

ETA: A kit like this is also high on my list, or at least items like those inside but not necessarily in a kit: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3029064&fromRegistryNumber=50921966&product_skn=15233′ defer=’defer.

As a soon to be mom who just registered, I would be over the moon if someone got me our infant car seat, stroller, baby monitor or swing. I got my bestie a swing that was around $160 and she LOVED it.

@TwoStatesBride:  Well that was me that started that other thread about hoping we had gotten some bigger items, but really, it was mostly about hoping we had gotten some more functional things besides onsies and blankets.

If you’re looking to spend that money, please get her a car seat, stroller, swing, or breast pump from her registry – it will be a HUGE help for her. Not only do you have to worry about second hand stuff for safety, but also, sometimes you have to order those items and they might take time to come in – so you would be saving her a headache from running around in a last minute panic too – good as gold.

Honestly, for me, my diaper bag. But I can also truthfully say I’d be just as happy with a woombie or miracle blanket or baby carrier or bum wipes or a snotsucker.
