1. Oceanview/Oceanfront Destination--Do-able for a drive/long weekend for guests
2. Helpful onsite coordinatiors/staff--I know that sounds crazy but when planning from a distance I really wanted to feel like I had someone "on our side". That is exactly what we found. If you find a really helpful/friendly place they will bend over backwards for you. Ex: I saw the country club had gold chargers on the table and I asked if we could have them for our wedding. Typically they do not allow them but for ours they said yes :-) Free chargers!
1) Cost
2) No on site caterer since my FI is a chef and we are having a friend cater for us
Totally cost. I have a big family and feeding 200+ people is challenging on a budget.
And looks. Mostly, I didn't want my family to know I was getting a deal on the venue. I wanted the venue to look nicer than it cost.
1. I wanted to be surrounded by nature when we say our vows. The outdoors has always been where I've felt God's presence most closely, so to me, a mountain vista or wooded grove feels as holy as a sanctuary or more so.
2. Location not too far from the city. Most of the places that fit the #1 criteria best are a couple hours away from the city. While I loved the stunning mountain views out there, I didn't want our guests to have to drive so far after flying across the country to the airport, and I also knew we'd have a hard time getting what I consider to be the best vendors since these tend to be clustered in the city and don't want to drive so far outside of it (or will charge hefty fees if they are willing to do so). I didn't want to depend on the hair and makeup stylists, photographers, cake bakers, caterers etc in some podunk little town, no matter how beatiful it was!
Cost was of course an important factor, but that more or less goes without saying I think.
Our venue is 17 miles from the center of the city and has a ceremony spot surrounded by old growth trees and looking over a stream and a pasture, so God bless Seattle for having such natural beauty so close to the city!
cost, location, and look of the site (sorry thats three but all were equally important)
It had to have an outdoor area (preferably looking out to water) and it had to be disabled friendly.
I had three criteria.
1) COST
2) How Pretty it was.. (I am a girl!)
3) Ceremony Site/ Reception Site Same Location!
Two reasons why we chose our reception venue 1.) It was away from church grounds (the church has a reception hall but it's tiny) 2.) It was in our same town and near by where we live 3.) The price! it was cheap.
4. They would try and establish a totalitarian hold on our reception if we did it at the church hall. AKA no dancing, etc. (FI wrote this while thefuturemrsgibbs wasn't looking)
1. Intimate
2. Not a Hotel/ballroom
3. 20 feet away from my ceremony!!
Okay so #3 wasn't a must- but it was a perk!
1. pretty with lots of greenery. (which it had when we saw it the same month of our wedding a year ago, but now it's all pretty dead because of this crap cold weather. sucky, but we're still going to have an amazing wedding.
2. cheap.
