Just for fun, I wonder what kinds of styles are going to look the craziest when we look back at our pictures?
Because I'm sure our mothers thought those floppy hats or puffy shoulders or high-necked gowns looked stylish and timeless!
Don't get me wrong, I think everyone should get the look they want, trendy or not. But we should also brace ourselves for the inevitable ravages of time, no?
Here's a short list to start with:
- one-shoulder looks
- bubble skirts
- "pick up" styles
- sleek ponytails
What else??
I forgot about colored sashes. Those are going to look very dated.
@Kittyachi: I totally agree. Dresses that look like lingerie totally freak me out.
I get the feeling that cage veils will go back out of style
Sorry girls, but I think mermaid dresses will be out of style in a few years too.
Kittyachi: Agree. So sorry Pinina if you are out there!
I unfortunately have to agree with pick-ups. Some women love them, they aren't my particualr style, but I feel that things are moving toward simple, classic & chic about as much as they can & that seems a little "froufy" to me.
I think that bird-cage veils will go back out. They are beautiful, but trendy.
Hair Fascinators will probably not go out, but may change.
I also think that wearing boleros will go back out eventually.
I love all these ideas, even had a fascinator myself, but those are the trends I see going away.
Limos! If I were getting married in 30 years I would leave on a space ship!!! Duh.
I'll second (or third) dresses with colored accents or pickups. I don't know about birdcage veils because they are already a throwback, so it's not like people will see them and immediately think "There's a wedding from the aught's!"
Giant, pick-uped, gathered frosted cupcake skirts/see-through corsets a la Pnina.
Wearing a "statement" necklace.
"Bling" dresses.
Dresses with color.
I agree with Ella. This are starting to trend to much simpler, more classic look already. A lot of the Fall 10/Spring 11 collections have gone back to more classic silhouettes and cleaner lines with far less embelishment.
@VirginiaMarie: HAHAHA ROFL, you win!
Honestly, one shoulder and sleek pony's are pretty timeless imho... but, colored dresses, color "splashes" on dresses, sashes, see through corsets, and pickups.
I agree on pick-ups--not that they aren't pretty on the right person, but when we look back in 5-10-20 years if you see a wedding photo with a pickup dress you will know exactly what decade it was from!
I think the side-bun and mini-pompadour/fohawk (both of which I love!!!) will be dated in a few years too. Of course I'll probably still wear them. Hehe.
honestly I agree with mermaid style dresses - I like them but just don't see them as classic.
I think colored shoes may date us brides now.
I may do some of these things anyway, but in addition to the above, I think side buns/pony tails, dresses with feathers/ruffles at the bottom, and Converse sneakers on the groom and groomsmen.
Not sure how I feel about colors/colored sahes. I think there's a slight chance we could see even more colors in dresses over time.
I totally agree--pickups and colored sashes will look dated.
But, I don't know about trumpet/mermaid dresses. One dress I've always loved is one that Rosemary Clooney wore in a scene from White Christmas (1954), and it is a definite trumpet/mermaid style. So, I am inclined to say that they are like birdcage veils--they go in and out of style.
@huckleberry783: That's almost a strawman argument though. All of these details that people are calling dated/silly were popular in the past too. Maybe not for wedding dresses, but in the course of fashion.
Honestly, I feel like pick-ups and colored sashes are already on their way out. Not that you shouldn't choose a dress like that if that's what you like. I wore a cage veil and colored shoes, which I'm sure will date my pictures, too.
most things end up looking dated. is that such a bad thing? one was/will be married in a certain era, the wedding was (hopefully meant) to represent one and one's partner at that time, so i really don't think it really matters all that much.
I agree with all of these except for sleek ponytails. I actually think those are timeless. Also mermaid style gowns. It is one of 6 cuts. The generation-type of brides might change resulting in the preference for another cut but I don't see it going away.
I think the embellishments we have on gowns/hair today will go away such as pick-ups, ruffles, feathers, butterflies, origami, netting, etc. but will eventually come back
@huckleberry783: Agreed. It's more about what you do with these basic silhouettes than the silhouette itself. I'd say the mermaid will age much better than, say, corset ballgowns, bubble hems, or brightly colored trimmings.
I agree with scissors. Who cares if your wedding was 20 years a go and looks like it's from 20 years a go?
Colored shoes and birdcage viels and mermaids I think as well. Yes it's a classic cut but I think a lot of mermaids today are way more exaggerated/tight than is usual and it won't be in style for wedding dresses anymore.
Not sure about the bubble hem - it's a detail that's not very obvious and I don't think its very popular so I think it'll stick around on the peripheries and most people won't notice if you had it or not. I looove bubble hems and really wish I could have had one, so I might be biased oh well.
I think it'd be great if we got away from white and went to color in the future.
And am I the only one who's seen a bride or two who is in totaly 'classic' 'timeless' style and... just doesn't look very good? Classic can be damn boring and dull with no personality. Or classic can be breathtaking. Same as trendy :).
I think having personal style is far more important than aping a style icon from 60 years ago :) Grace Kelly made her dress, not the other way around.
Per Kleinfeld's website (as I was trying to find out what a pick-up is!) - I think this is a good list (under their Q&A)
Q: What are the latest trends in bridal fashion?
A: 1) Dropped waist
2) Empire waist
3) Light fabrics (taffeta, tulle)
4) Corsets
5) Sweetheart neckline
6) Draping/ruched fabric
7) Mermaid/trumpet silhouette
@OttawaBride2011: Well the truth is, everything will of course look dated. That's some of the beauty of looking at old pictures, after all!
On the other hand, the tuxes that my dad and his groomsmen wore-- pale yellow, huge lapels and bow ties, black piping-- lean toward silly over nostalgic! But he was 20 years old and thought he looked great. My mom did not and still does not agree :)
@millaybrowning: LOL the fact that your mom hated it at the time proves that that style really wasn't even acceptable at the time. I love to make fun of my dad in his brother's wedding pictures in his powder blue tux and late 70s mustache.
@VirginiaMarie: LMAO haahaahaahaa Your post by far wins this thread!!!!! it reminds me of the Jetsons, lol remember that cartoon?
I wonder if strapless dresses will be less predominant in the future. Obviously, they won't look silly, and women will always wear strapless dresses, but they have become THE standard for wedding dresses only somewhat recently. I wonder if that is here to stay, or will ebb back out for awhile.
Also I see nothing wrong with being part of your era! Though some trends are more obviously this decade of-the-moment than others.
@carmel bride: When I was dress shopping, it was like asking for the moon to ask for a dress with actual sleeves of some kind, and not just sewn-in strap afterthoughts. It would be wonderful to see more variety!
I'm trying to figure out if this thread should be making me feel bad about my dress or not...
@Gemstone: Well considering almost every single style of dress has been mentioned in this thread already, I wouldn't feel too bad!
I know. It's hard to think of all of our picture-perfect wedding day looks becoming "silly" over time though...
I actually think that strapless dresses might be out in 30 years and we might see a swing back to sleeves. (but who knows...)
@Gemstone: Unfortunately, I think that's the point :) (in fun) - look at any "picture-perfect" wedding picture from any time longer than 15 years ago, and see how funny it looks! Just the sad reality that SOMEDAY we will look back at ourselves and chuckle a bit. :)
@MissBoston: Exactly. I certainly don't want anyone to feel bad about the lovely work we've all done! But I just think it's healthy to chuckle at the silliness of it all too ;). All in fun!
What exactly emcompasses a "classic" look? I realized I have no clue what that is....
