so - just curious - what words or phrases that are popular now, do you HATE that everyone else uses?
I ask because I absolutely DESPISE the term "Man-Cave" I just think it's so incredibly rediculous.
My husband hates "At the end of the day" because it is SO over-used and never used correctly.
What words or phrases can't you stand?
@edgypeanuts: Lovely greyhound!
"I don't know" is a phrase I cannot stand. It drives me into an unstoppable rage.
Using "would of" instead of "would have" and spelling "though" as "tho"
It bothers me when people use the wrong words entirely- I had this crazy boss that would say (over and over), "You have to use your INITIATIVE!" And point to his brain.
"Irregardless"
SHUT UP THAT IS NOT A WORD!!!!!!!
Also business buzz words like "solution management"
emb - I COMPLETELY agree. I always correct my students!
I hate when people shorten words like "vom" for vomit and say things out loud like JK, LOL etc. I dislike internet speak.
@ShellyT: Oh MY i was just going to say that. That was the first thing that popped in my mind. My friend says that to me all the time and I feel like slapping her everytime!!!!
@emb610: agreed...I am on "gay" and "retarded" police with my FI. He only slips up every now and then but still...
@texaslawgirl: I understand the dislike for the word but... it is a pretty old word. So most people don't know that regardless is the proper word to use.
Ginormous . . . it's like hearing fingernails down a chalkboard to me. Also, unnecessary abbreviations.
@texaslawgirl: I am in this same boat with you, I cannot stand when people say IRREGARDLESS!!! That is a double-negative, and it's NOT even a real word! I hear it daily & I grit my teeth when I do.
Most of the things I can't stand are written. I hate any text speak and "prolly". I mean, how hard is it to write out "probably"? What really irks me is when people use "I" and "me" incorrectly though. It makes my skin crawl!
I know this isn't a "word" but I hate it when people type in upper and lower case letters. I see a LOT of this on Facebook:
oMg i CaNnot BeLieVe YoU sTiLl tYpE lIkE tHiS yOu iDiOt
@texaslawgirl: I was going to say "irregardless", too!
I also hate "I could care less". Obviously you mean "I couldn't care less", which is the one that = "I don't care"! Because if you could care less, it means you DO care, at least somewhat. Otherwise how could you care less? :)
ETA: Oh wait! I also hate "supposably" instead of "supposedly". Ugh, SO not a word!
@edisonsgirl: I don't know! It took me forever just to type that little example because I REAAALLY had to think about it to do it.
people not using the subjunctive case.
also, the word "totes." like nails on a chalkboard.
I HATE the "no offense" thing. 100% of the time it's followed by something completely rude and offensive, saying that does not excuse you or make you less of a rude jerk.
@Emb I agree with those and also add "rape" when used about money or a video game.
@zippylef YES!!!
This is mostly older people who are family friends and stuff but I hate when people say "Them" in place of "those" like "Them are some..." or "Them are good" ahhhh!
I hate the word "preggers" is it really that much harder to say pregnant?
@waitingbee - that is so funny! i say that all the time cuz i think it's funny, but yes it is silly.
I actually can't stand it when people say "acrosst"... it's ACROSS people. i went ACROSS the street. we sailed ACROSS the lake. there is no T in that word!
@hope1275 - I COMPLETELY AGREE! lol! i never got that either! "I could care less" means exactly what it says: you could care less, so therefore you care. why don't people get that?
@cbee: wow...
I hate the use of rape, gay, and retarded. I hate when everything turns into an acronym.
Believe it or not, sooo many people, many educated people say, "there is" when at the time they are using it it is supposed to be "there are". That goes with many other things with is when are should be used. I agree with irregardless and when people misuse the word ignorant. (They are ignorant! haha)
@MacFaniam24: There was an episode of Bridezilla's where one of the brides kept misusing the word "ignorant." It was so annoying!
I hate it when people use the word gay incorrectly. It means homosexual or happy, that is it!
I also HATE it when people end their sentences with "Right?" It makes me feel like they are always searching for some sort of approval.
People (especially women) calling me "honey." Makes me want to rip their heads off for using such a degrading, overbearing, and coddling word.
Also, yummo, preggers, and "boys will be boys." Gag.
Saying "I heart you" etc. instead of "I love you."
"Nom, Nom, Nom"
I hate "just sayin'". Yeah, I know. I just heard you say it!
Ooh, and the abbreviaion IDK... Hate that one!
I really really really hate "You go girl!". It makes me want to bang my head against the wall. Especially when my FMIL says it and she's a 60 year old British lady.
I also hate the word "synergy". If anyone says it to me I automatically write them off and tune out.
