You bee's have been so wonderful putting up with me when I ask you dress questions. Thank you. If you can stand one more your help would really be appriciated.
When I first went became engaged I went dress shopping right away and bought a $400 dress just because it fit, was cheap and my friends liked it.
Well, I cried for 2 days because I knew it was not "the one". I decided to take the loss and go looking again.
I found a Maggie dress. Primavera and loved the bottom but wasn't completley sure about the top. The sales lady assured me that whatever alterations I wanted could be done beautifully. So I caved again and put $300 down on the sample that is a size or two to small but figured I could lose the weight in time.
I have never felt 100% about the Maggie. I hadn't picked my theme yet and I keept thinking if the dress need so many things added/taken away from it is it really my dress?
I decided on a theme(shabby chic/country ) In a big backyard with 250 guests and realized this dress was all wrong.
I went searching again and foud "THE ONE" for sure this time. Watters Devenport. I went to put the 50% down and found out the dress was double my budget!!! I had told then $1200 and the dress is $2400!!! Needless to say I walked out empty handed and very sad.
I have scoured preowned dress sites and classifieds to no avail.
The place where I have money down said they could apply the money I have down towards another dress at their store but They can't get the Devenport because they don't carry Watters. They had me try on other dresses but none even come close.
My question to you bee's is this.
Woul you keep the Primavera and get alterations done to try and make it what you like or find a way to buy the Devenport?
The thing is were are very tight on money for this wedding as it is.
I sometimes feel like it's only one day and my FI would love me in a white potato sack I should just stick with the Primavera.
Which would you choose?
Dress 1 Primavera

or Dress 2 Devenport

*sigh* Every thing I wanted in a dress is in the second one. Scalloped sweetheart neckline, a line, lace and organza, flowy, light. (i would wear a different belt)
I looked and looked and had pictures of this and similar dresses. No one had anything remotely close for me to try on or even see except the place that had the Devenpert.
I should just stop all this. Right? Suck it up and keep the Primavera. It's pretty enough. Right?
Ok, if I'm being honest, when I looked at the pictures I thought the FIRST one was the dream one and the second one was the one you already had. Call me crazy, but I love the first one so much more on you. That skirt is GORGEOUS. They can't make it a sweetheart neckline?
Obviously, it's up to you. But the first dress is NOT by any stretch a "white potato sack"
I really think the Primavera looks awesome on you!
What was your original dress budget? I know a lot of girls on the bee blew their original budgets but I would just never be able to do that. I don't think you have to "settle" but you do have to be realistic. What would you be sacrificing to make the Davenport fit into your budget? Without knowing more I think I would stick with the Primavera if I were in your shoes.
@whitwhit: I actually felt the same way! After I read your story, I expected the first dress to be really plain and, for lack of a better word, a bit boring.
But, wow! The detail on the bodice and on the hemline is so elegant and pretty. I like the first one much better than the second, but the second one is also pretty!
Only you know what you'll be most comfortable in on the big day, but I think you found a winner in the original dress.
I too love the 1st one and think the 2nd one has less of a wow factor.
But you have to love it...not me...lol.
@whitwhit: I honestly had the same reaction.
The Primavera is a beautiful dress, and doesn't look remotely "inappropriate" for a garden wedding to me. I think you could totally get it altered to have the type of neckline you want, and it would look beautiful. If your budget is already tight, is it worth it to spend sooo much more on another dress?
The bottom of both dresses is really similar and basically the only thing that makes the first less "shabby/chic" is the shiny satin. Maybe you can get an orverlay of lace on the top of the first one to make it less shiny?
I'd stick with the one you already have and can afford, it's beautiful and looks amazing on you and it's so similar to the second one that I think you'd regret it in the end if you spent more money for another dress thats so like the one you can afford.
I think they have a really similar shape and both look great on you, so you cant lose either way. Personally, I like the Primavera a little more.
@LGenz: My original dress budget was $1500 and that was stretching it. I owe about $900 more on the Primavera not including alterations.
I need to add something to the top of whatever dress I choose for modesty. I don't want to have any kind of boobage showing. cleavage or even like the push up area.
The first dress is STUNNING! It fits, it's elegant and perfect!! The second one definitely lacks any type of "wow" factor, for sure.
Just my opinion. They're both beautiful. Like you said, I'm sure you'll take your FI's breath away either way!
Good luck!
P.S. Adding a poll would be helpful! :)
@kala_way: That's what the seamstress told me. That I could add a lace overlay over the shiny organza top. I thought it was satan too. LOL
Wow Thanks bee's. You are really helping me feel better.
I would probably have to sacrafice the videographer to get the Devenport. Although I'm not sure we are even getting one yet.
They are both beautiful dresses!!! I love them both on you! You would look absolutely gorgeous in both of them!
i would cover the whole bodice of the first one in lace or rouched something-or-another to take the shine out, then i think it is the perfect dress again, once the neckline is sweethearted and scalloped with the lace edges... i like the way #1 sits on you so much better than #2... #2 just sorta STOPS all of a sudden from the bodice texture on you? they're both pretty dresses, though! :)
I agree with kala_way. The bottoms of the dress look very similar to me. I would take the picture of the dress you love to the seamstress and see if they think it would be possible to alter your exsisting dress to that one. If they say yes, you may end up saving yourself ALOT of money. :o)
they both look fabulous and both match your theme...stick with the one you already have that is in your budget. GOOD LUCK! :)
I agree with kala_way. Keep the first one and add a lace overlay. It will make the dress more shabby-chic and add modesty!
I don't know if I should respond... maybe I shouldn't... aah! Okay I'm going to.
What I always do when I read dress threads is NOT read the back story and only look at the pics first, then go back and read what the OP has to say. That way I form a totally unbiased opinion.
My opinion when I saw them was that the first dress was pretty, but I really wasn't crazy about the shiney top, and maybe it was just the photos but overall the fabric wasn't looking too nice to my eye and I wasn't really digging the dress overall.
The second one made me go :-O "That's perfect for her!" I love it. It looks like a very nice, high-end gown and is flattering on you. Gorgous.
Then... I read the back story. Oh no! Honestly, if I were your MOH or your good friend, I would tell you to buy the second one -- it's obvious that you love it way more -- and just plan on selling it after the wedding to recoup as much of the cost as you can. Because yes, that is a ton of money to spend on a one-day dress.
I like the first one better, too. I would just get it altered to have a sweatheart neckline. That's the only thing I like more about the second one.
I like the first one better too. Honestly though, you need to make a decision! Especially if you change your mind because who knows how long it would take to order the new dress. But, the Maggie dress is stunning. No worries!
I think the first one looks much better than the second - no need to keep looking! :)
I prefer the second one from these photos, but after going back over the pics another time, I think the main issue here is the lighting of the photos. The photo of the second dress is taken in MUCH more natural and flattering lighting, and this may be skewing your perspective. I bet the use of flash in a dark room is making the first dress look significantly shinier than it probably is in real life, too. The dresses themselves have very similar silhouettes and both make your body look rockin' so I would recommend sticking with the first one and taking some nicer pictures of it to help alleviate your dress regret :).
The Primavera dress is so pretty! I personally like it much better than the second dress. :)
Thank you so much bee's! I chose the Primavera. It was my first love and I am adding some kind of an illusion neckline and may add lace to the bodice.
As mckernae said. I really do think the flash makes it look shiner than it is. I google searched other brides in it and it didn't look shiny at all.
I'm not going to try it on again or start alterations until January because I am trying to lose weight and I don't want to see it on myself again until it fits or is too big. hehe Wish me luck!
@luvmyDwight: I'm glad you decided to keep your first dress - I think it is the right choice for several reasons: It's gorgeous. You will be gorgeous in it. And it doesn't make you stress out about paying for your wedding. Win-Win-Win! Yay!
@luvmyDwight: I know this is creeperish but are you trying on that watters gown at mariee bridal in AZ? I LOVED that place! But anyways I digress. I totally OVERSPENT on my vera wang and I just knew as soon as I put it on it was "The Dress". Do you really want to settle? Both gowns are beautiful and you look great in both but don't settle on anything. It will bother you for way too long! On the other hand, really make sure you just aren't overthinking anything! Obviously, you felt it was "the one" at some point right?
i'm happy you went with the primavera! it's very pretty, and i really do think the lighting in the photos was skewing your perspective... it's a gorgeous dress, and i'm confident that your seamstress will be able to alter it to your specifications! :) yay for keeping your original love and staying closer to your original budget! woo!
I think the first one looks much better/prettier! Congrats on finding a great dress!
It doesn't look shiny on these brides:

I'm glad you choose the Primavera too! It really is beautiful.
I think the Primavera dress looks great on you! Aside from that, it is a great price.
Thanks again every one. I am still happy that I chose the Primavera. The Watters has more expensive material but I do agree it seems kinda plain compared to the Primavera.
And magz88 not creepy at all. LOL yes that is where I was but my experiance turned out not so nice. You can read about it here...http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/why-would-they-do-this
The other store is Lillian Lottie Coture. Do you live in AZ?
@luvmyDwight: i dont but i was down there for vacation and the very first place i went gown shopping. i looove claire pettibone and ian studart and the lady that owned the place helped me. i almost bought pettiboness chantilly but i live in minnesota so i passed. i think you are right to stick to the original pick unless you are completely certain. i am gonna go read what you wrote now.
The first one is stunning. Sweetheart that neckline and you will be good to go!! Stick with the Primavera and you will have "saved" $2400 - think about all the beautful things you can buy with that! Shoes, veil, jewelery, make up, shoes... and then you'll still have a wad of cash in your back pocket! :)
@luvmyDwight: You said you need to add something to the top of the dress for modesty... Jasmine's Bridal sells bridal tops. You could tuck them into the dress instead of wearing them over it? http://www.jasminesbridalshop.com/index.php?task=productlist&classid=14

@luvmyDwight: No problem! How much did you pay for the Primavera dress? I really like it and am considering getting it now!
I agree with what @littlemissmango said. I looked at the pictures before reading the story and LOVED, without question, the Davenport on you. If I were your friend I'd probably advise you to go for that one, too, and try to recoup what you can of your first expenses. You're only doing this once, and yeah, it's just one day, but those wedding pictures will keep popping up forever!
This is not to say that the Primavera isn't beautiful on you, too. If you decide to stick with that one, I agree that a lace overlay on the top would look pretty.
I love the bottom on the Primavera, and I love the top of the Watters gown. Just a thought, did you want a sash? They can probably sew a sash onto the Primavera. It won't go all the way around because of the lace-up back, so it would end on either side of the laceup V. They can add a flower too. I didn't know if that was a detail you were missing about the Watters that you really wanted.
