    @Mint2Bee:  having wine on the tables is usually more wasteful and costly than to have poured wine service at dinner or open bar for the hour.

    @Mint2Bee:  We’re still debating what we can afford in terms of alcohol for the reception, but one of our options is having open bar during cocktail hour.  (Another option we’re considering is open bar all night offering soda, wine, and beer only.  This will be based on what our final quote from the caterer is, though.  We’re looking at probably around at least $5000 for the food, so if it’s significantly higher than that, we’ll have to save the extra $1500 and just do open bar during cocktail hour.)

     

    As a guest, I think I would prefer that to just having some wine at the table during dinner … At least if the bar is open, you can select what you want to drink.

    I would prefer open bar at cocktail hour, as PPs said a litre of wine on the tables during dinner would be more wasteful. Not everyone drinks wine, and the ones that do aren’t all likely to like the same wine, so to cater for a wider range an open bar during cocktail hour would be the best option in my opinion.

    I would prefer open bar because I’m more choosy with what alcohol I like. I’d rather have a choice of something I like during cocktail hour over a wine I won’t like during dinner. Plus I’m not a huge drinker anyway.

    Need more details on what you will or won’t be providing throughout.

    Guests should never have to open their wallets at your wedding and its even more confusing when something was once free and then is cut off. Offer wine and beer throughout the night and leave it there.

    I like wine and beer all night, but if it’s one or the other, I would pick the open bar at cocktail hour!

    And since the purpose of cocktail hour is drinks, I don’t think anyone will forget to get one!

    I’d prefer wine at my table during the reception.
