@Aquaria:  I would prefer employment. DH didn’t go to college because that was never his dream and instead he joined the military at the age of 17 🙂

He had a lot of offers and scholarships were pretty much pounding on his door of opportunity but it just wasn’t what he pictured for himself.

It really depends on the employment type/ master degree.  If his masters degree is in something he enjoys and has potential to get him where he wants, I will support him.  If his job is something that he hates, I would support him to change.  I don’t think I could be with a guy who works in fast food and hates it, but I did date a guy who was getting his law degree, without knowing he had a job after school.

I would choose unemployment & master’s, because in my town, there aren’t many opportunities without some kind of post-secondary education. Even if he was unemployed now, there is more long-term potential (in my area) for employment if he had a master’s versus a highshool diploma/GED.

@Aquaria:  Masters and (current, temporary) unemployment. I’m just considering the potential for growth.

I’d want to see growth and movement in a positive direction in either case. If my partner had a GED/employment, I’d want to see his striving for more, going back to school and getting a better job, rather than stuck in a terrible job forever. Same with the MS and unemployment – I’d want to see a serious effort in seeking ways to make ANY money with an eye towards the future of a stable career, through networking, applying and interviewing for jobs pretty much all the time.

Currently, my FH is the latter – GED and employed – which is fine… for now. I guess it all depends on our life situation otherwise. If I’m working, then Masters and unemployed is fine (temporarily), but if I can’t support us both, he needs to have a job.

@Aquaria:  Employment. Many college/Masters programs are a scam nowadays with no guaranteed shot of employment afterwards. I would however expect that he be in some kind of growth/development track within his job and not at a dead-end position.
