@kimmo416:  It looks ill-fitting on the model, but its an appropriate length for work and as long as your wear a cardigan or blazer..

(I work in a business-casual environment, this would be considered dressed up.)

With a jacket it will be perfectly appropriate.

With a blazer or cardi it will look nice. Consider panty hose, as well.

You should wear something to cover up your shoulders.  If it turns out everyone else has uncovered shoulders, you can always take the blazer or cardigan off, but you want to look more professional starting out!

@kimmo416:  I would wear it with a black blazer to a work event (if I liked pink).

I agree with wearing the dress with a blazer, very professional. However, for a first work event I would go with a more muted color. Bright Pink seems a bit too loud!

The goal is not to look like a society lady, it’s to look like the female equivalent of your co-workers.  I think a nice skirt suit would be in order (in a solid colour, think of the suit colours Hillary Clinton has worn), with pantyhouse and heels.  Can you discreetly e-mail the organizers and ask about dress code? Can you google pictures of past events to see what the attendees are wearing? When in doubt, err on the side of conversative and boring.
