MY FSIL (who I'm very close with) is pregnany with baby #2 (a boy due in April). Baby #1 (also a boy) is going to be 2 years old in May.

FI and I are trying to figure out what to get them as a gift. They have everything they need from baby #1. I've asked her and she won't give me any ideas. She said they've bought baby #2 some new clothes so he doesn't have to wear EVERYTHING 2nd hand.

I'm just wondering what parents can use for the 2nd baby?

The only things I can come up with are clothes, and diapers...

A coupon for babysitting duties and a gift certificate to a restaurant. And if you're not local, an extra check to pay their local babysitter.

Ohh babysitting coupons are a good idea (we live about 5 minutes from them).

Make sure to include a gift for Baby #1. It's always nice to get something for the older child because they are already dealing with a lot of jealousy issues from having to share mom and dad with the new baby and with the new sibling getting lots of presents. I like to get something like a book or a game the parents can play with the child to ensure they get some one on one time doing something new and fun and I'll often include a movie too that way they have something to occupy that child when they are really needing to tend to the baby or just get a break.

Hmm that's always tough.  How about a second car seat or another stroller?  They'll need 2 of some things-- the two kids can't share everything!  Diapers are always useful, and I like the idea of making up some babysitting certificates.  :)

@eeh2010 - We're definitley going to get something for baby #1. I'll probably hit up the local Toys R' Us store and find him something.

@ddubzz - Unfortunatley they always have 3 strollers (regular that the car seat can clip into, double stroller and a jogging stroller) and they have a couple of car seats as well. I'm trying to think of other things they might need 2 of...

You could matching baby brother onsie and big brother tee... it would be adorable!

You could throw in a couple more outfits, onsies, shoes, etc.  Some cute outfits that aren't already stained with spit-up will be nice to have.  Also, you could do a basket of disposable items such as diaper rash cream, lotion, soap, etc.

what about something for mommy?  we have a really amazing spa locally that specializes in maternity and post-baby massages, facials (everyone knows how screwed up your skin gets when you're prego!), im sure you can find something like that in your area as well.

I agree with ClairDarling- I got my sister a 1 hour message gift card to a local spa when she was pregnant and she said it was THE best gift she got at her baby shower. Help both the kids out by relaxing mommy! :)

The best gifts we received for baby #2 were cute matching outfits, diapers (boring, I know) and food--gift certificates for delivery, frozen meals, surpise meals, planned meals..trying to think coherently and use the oven is quite a challenge with two little ones in two...Also, anything "expendable", breast milk storage bags, lotion, shampoo, bottle of wine for mom and dad :)  Replacement bibs and burp clothes.

My cousin recently had her second child.  I got her a sling!  I think it's a great gift, because not all that many people are familiar with baby-wearing and when you already have 1 small child it's great to be able to wear the baby so you're hands free for the 2 year old!

By the way, if you do decide to go this route, don't just get a baby bjorn.  They don't sperate the legs properly, they're bad for baby's posture and comfort.  If you think they'd like the ease of a baby bjorn, check out the ergo baby carrier.

    Good luck!

It's boring, but diapers are always in demand! Since they have everything they need already,  you can get them some "luxury" item that just might be nice for them to have, but totally not really necessary

Hmm I didn't think you typically bought a gift for the second child.  I think a good gift would just be a gift card to some baby store so they can get what they need.
