I'm one of many women who wants to keep my maiden name because it's awesome! So, if you have an awesome maidnen name, what's so great about it?
For me:
1) It's unusual. There's no one in the country with my last name who isn't related to me.
2) When people hear my last name they always ask if I'm Italian (yes).
It's an unusual name which people rarely spell or pronounce correctly but that doesn't bother me at all.
The only thing that's awesome about it is that it connects me to my dad and his family, but other than that... I have one of the most "vanilla" last names ever!
It's a word. "Riddle"
Strangely enough, noone can ever spell it. I facepalm a lot.
My maiden name is awseome.
I dont mind sharing it.
Power
:) POWER TO THE PEOPLE!! its so easy to spell!
Mine is a color with an E at the end!
I just like mine because I was really close with my grandpa, and I have an awesome relationship with my parents, so I wanted to keep mine. I'm not keeping it as my last name, but I'm making it my second middle name because I can't let it go!
:]
My last name is super awesome. I love it because it's not very common in the United States and people are always calling me by my last name, so I am very attached to it. It's a little annoying, though, because someone famous shares my last name (although she was really famous in the early 90's and then not so famous until recently when she was on a very popular show) and people usually ask me if we're related when they first meet me, even during the time when she wasn't so famous. People ask me if I'm keeping my last name (haven't decided yet) because they love it and think I should.
I have two last names, which makes my 'maiden' name doubly awesome :D They're also very obviously in Spanish (one even has an ñ), thus connecting me to my Puerto Rican heritage. Also, they're very me, which I guess is kinda hard to explain, but basically I've had them all my life and I can't imagine myself with a different name, so yeah, they're pretty awesome =)
@scissors -- OMG you're related to Voldemort! O_O
(sorry, was re-reading Harry Potter in the flight home from the wedding, lol!)
@scissors: I'm such a nerd. When I read your name, I feel compelled to ask you if your father's name is Tom. :P
*hums Harry Potter music*
My maiden name is awesome because it gives me the initials ASH, which are also the first three letters of my first name. Those three letters are also in my middle name; ironically, my future name will be spelled with letters from my maiden name, including those three. :)
ETA: azula beat me to the punch by fifteen seconds! Bwahaha.
My maiden name is awesome because it is the same as my married name will be--- nope, I am not choosing to 'keep' my maiden name... I am marrying a man with the SAME last name! HAHA :)
My maiden name is pretty unusual(hint:it's in my username!)...I've never met anyone I wasn't related to that had the same one, although I know there are others out there.
My fiance's last name is super cool too, and I while I always planned on changing my name, that just makes it all the sweeter. Even if I will be spelling it aloud for the rest of my life. ;)
My maiden last name has a really cool specific job title. Kind of like "Butler" or "Smith" is derived from long ago job positions, mine is "Linay" in Filipino it transalates to: "the rice shaker".... its someone who seperates the rice from its outer layer/skin by shaking it in a basket.... i can imagine some long ago ancestor who did it for a living!
It's a city in Alaska. Fairbanks. When I was little, I wished my first name was Alaska so I'd be Fairbanks, Alaska. I was a nerd (still am).
Also, it's a compound word that no one can spell. Argh.
My maiden name is pronounced like the word "petite" and I'm fairly small (5'1'' 110lbs) which I think is kind of funny :)
People always tell me it's fitting, like I'd never have thought of it myself. "WHOA you're last name is petite and you're petite- Cool HUH?!"
I get a kick out of it.
Mine is a town in England and means "field of doves." In addition, my first and last name start with the same initial which I think sounds nice. Also, my parents named all of us kids with the same initials...it's kind of dorky, but it ties us together as a family.
Depsite all that though, I'm changing my last name. There are good thing about my fiance's last name too!
Mine is a somewhat common German last name, but I think I've personally met ONE other person (not related) who spells it the same way, and whenever people guessed, they would leave out the c or add too many f's. So I always had to spell it. However, I liked my initials (KES) and when I was little I always signed my artwork BY KES and then drew a picture of a bike above it.
And I've now totally outed myself to anybody who knew me as a kid. Hopefully there's none of you out there. :)
@ Scissors - that's awesome. I am such a Harry Potter nerd. :P
Mine is uncommon but not so rare that people get confused. There's only two possible spellings and it's impossible to mispronounce. Also - it's very similiar to a word... an awesome one. I share my last name with one of the Beatles, and they're my favorite band. :)
I told my boy he should take his, but he's pretty attached to it, so I guess we'll be a mis-matched couple which is a-ok by me.
My maiden name is the most common surname in the WORLD, lol! So yeah, it's not so special... but it's special in my heart.
My last name is quite boring. I am going to miss it - I played high school and collegiate sports and all my friends call me by my last name or my nickname includes my last name....I think they'll still refer to me that way. I would be sad if they didn't.....
Mine is just kind of interesting and I get comments on it all of the time - Bloodgood. Creeps little kids out lol It is a Cherokee name though so people that know that don't usually find it so strange because the word blood is in a lot of them. I'll be taking FI's last name though, but my parents might be bummed.
It's unique! And although growing up it was mispronounced and it really irked me, it doesn't anymore, and I get a lot of compliments on how pretty it sounds. Plus it gives me the initials: VS, so anytime there's Victoria Secret stuff with VS all over it, I love it, I joke with friends that it was made custom for me since they are my initials :)
Dont care much for it but I like the fact its my grandmas first name (dads side)....And my first name which I love!! was my grandmas (mom side) I was named after both : )
I like mine because I've never met anyone with the same name that I wasn't related to. But, most people can't pronounce it right. It's dangott...but most of the okies say "dangit" instead of "dan got" LOL
Mine is Scottish clan name with an interesting history. My father made sure my sister and I read up on this history of our clan all through our childhood!
My first and last name together leave no doubt that I am a very Irish girl. Lose the last name, and I'm like every other Katie born in the early 80s. My parents gave us all Irish names (sibs are Timothy, Sean & Shannon), but mine is the only one that seems like it could be a cope-out if I don't have the Irish last name to go with it; like, if it wasn't Katie, it could be Jennifer or Heather or one of the other super common names from that year. My maiden name solidifies my identity=(
There is nothing really special about my last name! It's long, no one can ever say it or spell it even though it's made up of 3 very common 3 letter names/words and it put me always at the end of the alphabet in school.
I'll be proud to move up to the beginning of alphabet come Oct. I'm just looking forward to taking my FH name since it's tradition. I never really thought about not doing so until I saw so many bees keeping theirs but I think it's awesome that so many of you are honoring your maiden names even after your married
My last name is pretty unique if you're in the U.S. but since it's a name of about 12 towns in Germany it isn't all that unique there. It means "Village of Cream" because when Germany was divided into 12 kingdoms, each had a village where the dairy farms were located - hence a whole bunch of provincial towns with my name on it!
I've also got Ellis Island history - two brothers came through and the name was fairly long, and one came through with one F on the end and the other came through with two, which is how we trace family back to one brother or the other.
My maiden name was pretty unique and I CONSTANTLY had to spell it for people. it became like part of the name... SMITH S-M-I-T-H. The Czech meaning of it was cool, but I was happy to get rid of the complications when I married the X and got a last name that was easy.
Since I'm an encore, I originally kept the X's name after our divorce, for my small children. Now that I'm marrying the man I've waited for my entire life, taking his name is more like an honor. I'm excited about that!
Like the OP, no one in this country has my last name if they're not related to me. I'm also the only one with my first/last name currently unless some second or third cousin has decided to name their kid my first name recently. Also, I'm super close to my dad and I was super close to my grandfather who died when I was young... so I like that I feel connected to them with the name. I also think its cool that its a Bohemian name. People often ask what the origin of it is, and I say Bohemian and they look at me weird bc they think I mean RENT hippies or something? haha. Then I remind them that there was a country named Bohemia that became Czech (after my family left).
I am having a really hard time getting used to the idea that my last name is going away :(
First of all, its my Mother's maiden name. I don't have a relationship with my Father so when I was very little I chose to change my last name to my Mother's. It was a very important, powerful thing to me. It marked the point in my life (even though I was young) where I realized I could control how I handled hardships.
Secondly, its Italian. My family is Italian and my new last name will be very American. Not that I need people to have a idea of what ethnicity I belong to, its just something I hold dear.
And lastly, unfortunately, all the the men in my family (except my cousin) have passed young, so there is not much chance to continue our name. This is so melodramatic, but if feels like my namesake is dying with my name change!
It's short...only 3 letters
Cyr
thats it. It's an unusual name that speaks to my Acadien heritage...and it's short enough that we will be able to tack it onto FI's name to make a supercool double name that we will both take :)
I like my last name because it's mine. That's really the only thing that's awesome about it.
It's actually kind of a pain-in-the-ass last name because it's also a word with a meaning, but my name spelled differently than the word. So everyone spells my name with an E, when there is no E. There's also a famous athlete who has the same last name as mine, but he has the E.
Mine is a very common last name, but it's also the name of my favorite style of beer! I also love that it connects me to my family's history, especially now that I've been documenting our family tree for the last few years.
Mine is only 3 letters, made of of only 2 letters.... It's impossible to get wrong.
I LOVE my last name but I'm still happy to take on FI's which is polish and 9 letters long... oy
My maiden name is very unusual, there are only a few thousand people IN THE WORLD with it and I have never met someone with my last name who wasn't related to me. My first name is also pretty unusual even in Korean (my heritage) so it took a long time for me to love my name, but it happened and now I'm very attached! My FI really wants me to take his last name, which I don't have a problem with in theory--but my first name with his last name sounds TERRIBLE.
Plus, If I keep my maiden name and get my PhD, I'll be a Spiderman character! Can you guess my last name?
I don't really mind giving up my maiden name, it's lacking in vowels. No one ever spells it right or pronounces it right. It makes me nuts. HOWEVER the one cool thing about it is that when I J-Lo my name, I'm VeNus! LOL! That makes me giggle!
I love my maiden name (and kept it as my second middle name) because...
1) It's VERY Italian
2) It makes me proud of my family and our heritage
3) It has a gorgeous meaning in its original language
Thankfully, my husband has an Italian name too. So, I am not missing out on that part of my past. I did tell him, though, that I wouldn't have married him if he had a boring last name. Hahahahaha. He thinks I was joking.
My last name is completely unique -- only my sister and I have it (it's a hyphenated combination of my parents' last names). It's uniqueness actually serves me really well in my line of work. However, my last name is also a huge pain, and really unwieldy, so I'm changing it when I get married. So long hyphenated last name!
Like two other posters on here, my maiden name is Czech and it reminds me of my heritage. However, my maiden name also happens to be a VERY common word Japanese, so before people meet me and they know my name they always think that I will be Japanese. But no one ever pronounces it right.
My new last name will be lame-o. Jones. Super common. Very boring. I am actually having second thoughts about changing it...
I love my maiden name, and I'm going to be sad to give it up =(
Like the op, I love it because:
1. It's unusual-no one in the country that has it that's not related to me.
2. People know that it's German!
3. People ALWAYS mispronounce it-but I don't mind either =]
It's "Neutze" (NEWT-zee) Yes, it sounds hauntingly close to Nazi, but whatev. I will be keeping it sort of as my middle name-like most people do-I think?
I will be changing to Baird. And I can't tell you how many times people have already joked about "Mrs. Baird's bread"

I still tease my FI that I'm keeping my maiden name even though I'm not. It hurts his man-pride.
Cbgg - the reasons my name are awesome match yours exactly! And I'm keeping it - it's too awesome not to ;-)
