What's been your biggest wedding planning "oops" so far?

My biggest mistake to-date, with 3 1/2 months to go, has been the invitations. We did DIY'd the invitations and we made the RSVP's unmailable because they were too small. We had to do a quick fix and are not having the RSVPS come in all electronically/by phone - not my favorite, but we were in a pinch.

What has been your biggest mistake so far? How did it turn out?

@missmarchmommy:  Has that just been the most difficult thing to decide or have you actually made a mistake? Surprised

Putting a deposit down on a photographer before Christmas. FI's parents gave us a huge wedding donation as a xmas present - I wish I could have gone with a photographer we liked better but appeared at the time to be out of the budget. Cry Wish they would have told us sooner! Or that I would have waited. Sigh.

@kag5079:  Oh No! The same thing happened to us! I didn't know that my grandmother was going to be contributing so we signed a contract for 50 guests instead of the 100 we had wanted. Not but a week later my grandmother contributed and I was in a (thankful) panic. As it turns out, the vendor was going to let us amend the contract but we decided to stick with the orginal 50 anyway - Not a big oops, afterall! Smile

I printed the wrong meal choice on my rsvps.  And they were a pain in the ass too because I had personalized them all with the guest names.  I ended up just buying plain card stock and reprinting them.  They didnt match the invites anymore but it was better than trying to glue the correction over the mistake.

@aliavenue:  Putting a deposit down on a tent and rental stuff without REALLY thinking about what the implications of an outdoor wedding might be in October for my family.  We ended up moving the venue and losing over $900 because of it.  I shouldn't have been so impatient to book something.  :(

@speechgal44:  I hope you don't mind me asking. Do you mean because October = too cold to be outside? I'm just curious why a tent might have been a bad idea!

Our wedding is 3 hours from the city so people will need to stay the night and silly me didnt realise the date corresponds with the last weekend of school holidays... meaning all accommodation has a 2 night minimum. As far as I can tell people are not complaining (to my face anyway), but I still feel bad!

Another oops was not realising that when it says 'room fits 60 people' it means with no dance floor or DJ... we are only having 50 but I will still need to remove some tables to make space and we wont be having a DJ (not like you need one for 50 people, but it would have been nice to have the option). Sigh.

@Bears-bub:  Ah yes, the date. We realized the "mistake" we were making with the date (School Finals, Graduation, Weekend before Mother's Day) but we're military and just didn't have another option. Boooo.

@aliavenue:  Happy to report that I do! Ordered my Augusta Jones a few weeks ago, so psyched! Also glad that at least less than $1k was spent on the first two runners up. Fingers crossed I can sell at least one!

@FutureMs.Canadian:  Good! You wouldn't believe that I was over at a friend's the other day and she said "I bought two dresses, I just didn't like the color of the first. Wanna see it?" (I had seen the dress she wore to the wedding.) She pulled it out and I'll be derned if it wasn't an Alvina Valenta!! How do you buy an Alvina Valenta and decide it's not the right gown?! Tongue Out

Going to Kleinfeld's sample sale before I'd ever tried on a wedding dress and buying a dress there for $1800 (regularly $3,000) just to determine later that it's not the dress for me, and the dress for me is actually a MUCH less expensive ($1000 cheaper) dress at another store....I was able to sell the first dress but lost $500 on the sale.  Gulp.   Surprised

@hardtoconcentrate:  Oh my gosh, so funny! Which one? I'll be wearing Juno! Though I tried on a bunch of hers and thought they were all beautiful-- and really flattering! I'm glad to hear you were able to sell the AJ gown, I plan to sell mine after the wedding.

I also had sample sale drama-- something about the time pressure to buy it right then, it makes it too easy to make a huge purchase without the dress being *right*

@aliavenue:  Errr....one of my "swings and a miss" is a Monique Lhuillier lol. Sometimes I feel crazy for second guessing it lol! Alvina Valenta dresses are to die for though!

@elysion:  3 1/2" x 5" for rectangular envelopes!! That was just larger than the size of my invites (Okay, maybe that's a stretch, but still!)!

@FutureMs.Canadian:  Ohhhh, Juno is beautiful!!  Mine was Cameo.  It's a pretty uncommon dress and was absolutely beautiful...I just decided I wanted something a little more fitted than a ball gown.  Exactly why a sample sale isn't the best idea for a first-time shopper - I had no idea what would look good on me.  Plus you're completely right - the time pressure really gets to you!

Apparently letting the groom pick out what colors he wanted to wear. Everyone looked at us like we had four heads. I don't get what is so hard to understand that a groom can pick put his own shirt color rather than just being told what to wear.

Falling madly in love with my venue and booking it without really thinking through the budget and costs. I'm still madly in love with our venue but holy moly our wedding is ending up being way more expensive than originally planned...

My biggest mistake was choosing my colors and getting started on DIY projects before I picked out a dress.  I fell in love with a champagne gown that really clashed with the purples I had chosen, so now all the projects I thought I had checked off my list need to be be redone.  Oh well...

I started all of my DIY projects a year and a half before the wedding, lets just say I now have 3 different sets of invitations (100 per set). and my craft room is slowly starting to run out of space. Imagine "Horders; the wedding edition"

@love108:  We have several people in our family who have physical limitations and it would have been difficult for them to get from the tent to the porta-potty.  I realized that it would have been challenging for them on a nice day, and if it had rained it would have been a nightmare.  Also, FI was worried that it might be chilly. Lastly, the tent was going to be put up in a friend's backyard, and I was worried about the parking logisitics.  By the time we hired people to do all the things that needed to be done, it was just cheaper to move it to a hotel.

OMGersh! I can't believe I put that down as my biggest "oops" when just the other day I discovered I had the rings shipped to my old address 1000 miles away! I had to file a police report and have them go the house to pick them up. Luckily, the home owner had them marked return-to-sender in the mailbox so I was able to have a family member pick them up for me, instead of having it returned to the store. Hopefully they will be here on Monday. WHEW - close one!

Small oops- messing up the last digit of the phone number of the 2nd hotel we had a block at...what's a 3 vs a 4? Ha. I figure folks have google, I was NOT sending out notes to 550pple to change one digit that we messed up on the invite.

Medium oops- having a miscommunication with one of the churches we'd briefly considered...they called me 2 months out to schedule my meeting for the upcoming wedidng there. Aaaah, no?! Thankfully they didn't try to charge a fee or anything (one of the reasons we didn't use them was due to the ridiculous expense).

Everything was so easy and fun with the planning of our wedding. When my fiance reviewed the menu and costs etc. he notice that they had assigned 2 servers for 110 people.  Luckily he noticed that and asked them to have 6 servers for 110 people.  Good service was important to us. Poor service for dinner would have been a disaster. Instead, the service was wonderful. I'm glad he noticed, because I wouldnt have!

I ordered a sample sale wedding gown online in the hopes of making it short to be a cute reception dress. Spent $250 and the thing barely fits (ordered same size as my ceremony gown). Trying to sell and not going too well.

Ha. Well, it was a huge oversight really. We mailed our invites in early January. Our RSVP deadline is February 17. The price of postage went up from .44 to .45 this past week....our RSVPs had .44 postage on them.

I feel kind of bad, but honestly, they had their invites for more than 3 weeks in most cases. If they were waiting until the deadline then oh well. I figure I'll just have to call all those that don't put a penny stamp on them, which if they waited so long, it's probably the people I'd have to call anyways. *sigh* Oh well.
