DH and I are in the very begining phases of building our own house. We have a basic floor plan and are trying to put together a list of wants/needs for our builder. We’ve got a pretty good list going, but we’ve been renting for years and I’m sure there are things we aren’t thinking of! Plus we could use some inspiration! 🙂 So tell me bees, what’s on your dream house list? And on the flip side of that, is there something in your current home that bugs the shit out of you and you wish you could change?

A trampoline room.
Sorry… I couldn’t help myself. But that’s very exciting! Congratulations 🙂

Awesome you are going to build your house!
For me, my dream house has a lot of glass, a 25meter pool so I can train right at home .
What annoys me in current house? Bad distribution of space. And no insulation. Which sucks both for heat and because everything that happens outside you hear it inside -.-. So I want thick, insulated walls. And a very nice and safe backyard so the doggies and future little ones (hopefully) can play while being safe.

Mrs. Coyote: I’m too lazy, I had a similar post here, and you can check it out for other ideas:

Mrs. Coyote: currently we are renting. Saving up for a dream house. The city we live in is too expe sive to buy unless your making hundreds of thousands of dollars.
But i do dream of my future homr and in it i hope to have to following:
1) walk in closet – if i dont have a walk in closet, i plan to make one of the spare bedrooms a closet. My cousin did this and omg, it looks like a little boutique. You can literally go shopping in there
2) an amazing kitchen with an island
3) i would like to have a decent backyard to fit a nice sized pool
4) a basement (dorsnt matter if its finished or not, we can do the work)
Those are mt top things

Mrs. Coyote: The most important part of our house will be a really nice outdoor space with a fireplace and lots of greenery. As for the inside of the house, our dream is to have TONS of windows and natural light, a beautiful fireplace in the living room and a really great master bath with a nice soaking tub.
What we dislike about our current place is how closed off our kitchen is. We plan to have a very open floorplan.
If you are building, the one experience I have from my sister’s house building is to REALLY think about outlet and light switch placement. Make sure it’s convenient 🙂

So exciting!! Here would be my requirements…. we live in such an expensive area, this list is just a pipe dream for me.
- many closets! including a walk-in in the master
- master bath with double vanities and a little separate room with the toilet
- open floor plan for kitchen/living room/dining room
- tons of kitchen cabinet space
Hmm. I would have expected to be able to come up with more!

We just purchased our first home and so far I love almost everything about it. But for our next purchase…and this may sound strange….but….. I will pay more attention to the direction of the sun and our windows. This is hard to describe….we spend most of our time in the back of the house (only an office and garage at the front). And on the backside, two windows are shaded by patio overhang. So for most of the day, we lack natural light because the back is facing east.
Sounds like a really weird thing, but it bugs the shit out of me because I have lamps on at noon.
Dream house: large kitchen, tons of cabinet space, and tray ceilings (all of which this house has!)
Good luck on this exciting planning time!

DH and I have separate closets; I believe it has been a savior for our marriage. It was a major selling point in our house!
Counter space- our kitchen has very little so we’re doing a huge reno next summer so that we get our dream kitchen!
Wall space- open floor plans are fantastic and I love them, but I do worry a bit about having enough space for our furniture (shelving, china cabinet, etc).
To that point- storage. We have 2 pantry closets (love them!)
For me, I really wanted my kitchen to look out to the backyard. There is a window above our sink that I love. I can imagine looking out that window watching my kids playing in the backyard (right now I’m just watching our dog:-)) And it’s easy to go out to grill.
This isn’t our dream home, but I love it!

-Walk master bathroom/closet area (my aunt has one and it’s literally half the size of our house…)
-Kitchen large enough to support an island, french door fridge with freezer on the bottom, stainless steel appliances and a bad ass oven.
those my wants for a dream house.
My needs in the current house I live in…we need a larger kitchen area, my husband and I can’t both be in the kitchen at the same time. Nor can one of us get by if we open the fridge door.
Our master bathroom? Smaller than the guest bathroom… and my husband is a giant, so everything is kind of mini sized to him.
our bedroom is down the hall from our daughters room (which I hate).

Mrs. Coyote: My dream house is a little ridiculous, but here goes lol:
-heated salt water pool
-sauna and steam room (love those)
-basic gym equipment
-flat lawn with no weeds
-screened in porches
– French doors off of the master bedroom that leads to a screened in porch
-loads of counter space and cabinets in the kitchen
-walk in dressing room
-6 bedrooms, 7 baths
lmao, I basically described my in-law’s house (one of them). A girl can dream right?
Current house needs more closet space and I would love to get our lawn re-sod.

Current home that shits me (also renting)
The mirror placement in the bathroom is chest height. I mean seriously.
No deck or cover in the back yard (important for my pets)
A very diggable yard (again pets)
Would have a giant catary and shelving throughout the house for my cat.
Would have a pond
Would have a well fenced back yard for the dogs
Would have an enclosed deck for guests in winter
Would be designed for FI gaming.cablea through walls instead of along the ground. Extra power things in the walls. Large living room/gaming room for his dream set up.
Floor length mirrors in bedroom and bathroom.
Separate bath and shower.
Two floors ( not super common in aus and reminds me of my home in England)
High fences so people can’t see in a dogs can’t see out.
Room size designed with my tanks in mind (fish and reptile)
And also having a giant fish tank (min 6ft) somewhere.
Theres more and I keep adding to it. But heavily made for my pets and his technology.

damarajade: A trampoline room would be AWESOME! I’ll ask DH, but it’s probably out of the budget.
AB Bride: Thank you! That’s a really helpful thread.
Daizy914: Sweet, it looks like we’ve got your top 3 thing already. We really want the basement too, but DAMN it is expensive so we might have to compromise on that.
FutureMRS3lastnames: We luckily have a lot of property and will be doing our own landscaping in the back. Cannot wait to have a firepit! And yes, I have *just* started to think about things like outlets and light switches. It’s so overwhelming!
SaltedCaramel: Ha, our ist is looking very similar to that!! I am very excited about the double vanities and separate toilet room in our master bath. It’s the little things right?!
Sporty-Bee: Insulated walls — smart! I will have to look into what our builder uses.

AprilinTX: That is definitely something to think about. We have *some* leeway there. We can probably angle the house, but for the most part it is going to face the road. The way we have it now the back of our house (kitchen/living room) faces northeast. But there will be no overhang so I suppose that will help. We’ll have to give it some more thought. Thank you!
ruby26: Great tips! Our floor plan has the option for two closests in the master. I thought it was unnecessary, but maybe we’ll rethink that! And yes, our kitchen will face the backyard. My parents had the exact setup you’re describing, with a window over the sink and I’m hoping to have the same!
mrs.joiner: Room for a french door fridge is BRILLIANT. I hadn’t thought of that, thank you! What do you mean about your room being down the hall? Do you wish it was closer?
TheLadyA : Ugh, heck yes to everything on your list! Hahahaha! Right now we are arguing over whether our bonus room should be used as a home theater or bar (first world problems eh?). I think it’s going to be a little bit of both.
gamerlover: Thankfully we just have a cat, but yes I can see how a lot of those things would be important. GREAT idea on the cables though. DH is a gamer and there are cables winding all through our apartment. Drives me crazy!
