We all have those certain songs that just make us cringe and would rather not hear on our wedding day. What songs made the cut on your do not play list?

I just started mine but I know that I do not want:

macarena, chicken dance and who let the dogs out.

    The Electric Slide

    The Hokey Pokey

Macarena, the Chicken Dance, Who Let the Dogs Out are all definite no plays.

Anything country is out. Sadly, anything hip-hop is, too, although I'm hoping to sneak A Tribe Called Quest in.

We're actually having 2 DJs, one for me and one for her. My DJ is my friend and he's a professional DJ who has a steady club job in Chicago. He's going to play all House with some 80s and 90s pop (and hopefully some disco!). Her DJ is going to spin all Bollywood songs mixed with disco. It should be a *ton* of fun!

any songs that there is a "dance" associated with are completey banned. No "Land Down Under" or "American Woman" (FI's friends love to sing this one to me as it is what I was refered to for several years after FI and I got together) - yes, I get it, FI and I are from different countrys but let's save it for Karaoke please! Fortunately, we are doing an iPod reception so we have complete control.

I'm definitely with aloweha, if the song has a dance to match, it is NOT being played. And no heavy metal, sorry to any metal fans, but it is my most unfavorite type of music, and I attended a wedding last summer where the DJ kept playing heavy metal songs (requested by a couple of super-drunk guests), it is not dance music in my book.
@kenny - your dual DJ's sound like fun!!!

loralie-Me too! That song drives me crazy! And I love Aerosmith.

On the no list for us is The Macarena, The Hokey Pokey. No Electric Slide but I think we'll replace it with Personal Jesus. We've got a good amount of kids and teens coming to the wedding so we're going to do "some" of the dance songs. I'm torn on the Chicken Dance-it's fun, especially for the kids.

I;m with you on "Celebrate" krissybee.  I've pretty much banned anything that a typical "wedding band" might be tempted to sing, "the hustle" and other stereotypical 70s dance songs that you ALWAYS hear at weddings come to mind.

#5. Ha! Weird Al is actually on our must-play list, at least the song "White and Nerdy" (based on "Ridin" by Chamillionaire) because it's my fiance's unofficial theme song. Maybe it's because we're...white and nerdy? :)

Well gee, I don't have a "do no play" list, and most of the normal songs (Macarena, YMCA, chicken dance, etc.) are on my "must play and FI HAS to dance or else" list. What's on your 'Do Not Play' list? : wedding do not play music dj Icon Biggrin

At most of the weddings it's the organized dances that get most people on the floor. Although, we're having a polka band so my taste is probably a lot different than others. :) I'm going to request the band play the chicken dance twice; once early on for the kids and once late at night for the people who have been consuming adult beverages at a high rate.

I agree..Cotton Eyed Joe is just WWWWRONG!  Ymca?  Um No.  No rap either.  I am also opposed to the playing of the song "Single Ladies" by Beyonce because I think it's wrong to play that song at a wedding...

When I think of the song "Single Ladies", I am mentally transported back to last Christmas at the practice's Christmas party and remembering a 60 years plus dude with a potbelly from the accounting office stand on a chair and do a combination of the beoynce dance that justin timberlake did combined with a psueudo "you can leave your hat on/full monty" type dance where he removed his shirt.

    It's kinda like this>  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCw-7rk_Oag&feature=related

I refuse to listen to any song that has a dance associated with it. Also, absolutly NO Britney Smears (yes, I know I spelled it wrong. On purpose), and no country.

Ugh, I dislike Britney and Country. Grrr. I've been very go-with-the-flow so far, but i I hear any of these, I will go crazy!

I'm going to go against the group here and say that I DO want the "Electric Slide" payed at my wedding. I'll be the one in the front doing my jazzed up version of the dance. I think it's fun. I had never heard of the "Chicken Dance" untl a few years ago. Of the few weddings I've attended, they never played that.

I agree in general with most everyone else's picks no "Marcarena. I will be playing hip-hop since as a Black person growing up in NYC in the '80s and '90s  (like many of my guests) it would be rare to find someone who did not like it. We will NOT be playing anything vulgar though.

We specifically picked DJs that are not your typical wedding DJs. Both currently have nights at clubs here in NYC, so they are less likely to play the cheesier stuff.

I don't want any Elvis, country, techno.

@Ms.Editor - LOL..that song is pretty funny!! I like your sense of humor.

Ummmm my list is at home but I remember these being on the do not play area:

    Creed
    Nickelback
    Celine Dion
Any teen'y bopper kids (miley cyrus, jessie mccartney)
Any like..."gangsta" rap. Fun stuff/hip hop is alright though.

And as for the "has a dance to it" songs- we're doing Cupid Shuffle....andddd Electric Slide. We really didn't wanna do Electric Slide but before I could say anything about that my dad called me one day and was all excited about how he was teaching himself the Electric Slide to do at the wedding...I couldn't bear to burst his bubble so we're including that one lol

New York, New York!  We're getting married in NJ with a view of NYC, and when we were asked for a 'do not play' list, this was a first thing that came to mind.   I just have a feeling that after looking at the nyc skyline all night, and indulging in a few too many drinks, my mother will have a 'great idea' and think that this would be a cute way to end the night.  And of course, why would my DJ refuse the mother of the bride? And yes, I realize that we are getting married in NJ - which doesn't even make this a relevant choice! :)

I grew up on Hip Hop and FI loves 90's alternative music.  A lot of my do-not-play songs are on his playlist and vice versa :(

Dreading the playlist planning day.  Fortunately we can agree on popular dance music, I just want to throw in some old school hip-hop and soul for me and my side.

My do-not-play songs -  macarena, ymca, Jeannie in a bottle, sweet caroline, dead or alive (any cheesy bar song)

His do-not-play songs- macarena, electric slide (i'm gonna trick him and play the cha cha slide)What's on your 'Do Not Play' list? : wedding do not play music dj Icon Biggrin

I would say the R-E-S-P-E-C-T song... I don't know why, it's just kind of cliché to me. Also, anything with particularly raunchy lyrics. I went to a wedding where two little girls were doing the "Tootsie Roll" dance (remember that song?), and it was disturbing.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one with the aversion to that song - and I guess I should have added that I normally love Aerosmith.

We will be doing some songs with dances - my MOH and I LOVE a good line dance - cupid shuffle, boot scoot boogie, maybe electric slide.  Definitely no cotton eyed joe, and I'm with you about the no raunchy lyrics, Mitla.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor.

That song is ALWAYS played at weddings, and I find it SO inappropriate since the song is about someone surviving a horrific breakup and kicking a significant other out of their lives!

While my fiance and I listen to alot of rap and hip hop in our free time, I've vetoed a majority of it, for the pure and simple fact that there are very few appropriate rap songs. Aside from have a couple very religious family members, I don't think my family members are going to want to get low or back anything up. :)

Like others, no macarena, ymca, elecrtic slide, BUT we WILL be doing the Cotten Eyed Joe, I LOVE this & it always reminds me of my fun crazy nights in college!

We will not be playing hip hop (I love it, but my FI put his foot down b/c he doesn't think its appropriate with our elder family members being present)

Also, No pop country: like Toby Keith, Big & Rich, Taylor Swift, etc. However, we will be getting down to many of our Texas country tracks, its more like rock and so fun when you've had a few :)

we're the last of our friends to get married, and our philosophy is, "we did the chicken dance at YOUR wedding, get your butt out there!"

And I'm a gay man trapped in a woman's body, so ALL of the cheeky line dance songs (Cha Cha Slide, Cupid Shufle, Electric Slide, etc etc ad naseum) will be played at my request.  FI doesn't dance, so it's all the same to him!

Wow everyone hates the chicken dance...  ha ha, I think its super corny but harmless..

I forgot to tell the DJ to not play the macarena, I'll still need to do that.  But ours is:

Lovin' You by Minnie Riperton (I hate this song... but everyone who knows me well would probably laugh if this gets played)

YMCA  by Village People (I like it but fiance doesn't)

Finally  by Cece Peniston (fiance says no)
