My FI was feeling down yesterday and so to cheer him up, I made him watch youtube videos of border collie puppies with me (border collies are his favorite!) and made him dinner and dessert. What do you do when your FI is down in the dumps?

I send him pictures of cute animals sometimes too - our favorites right now are momongas (little fluffy Japanese flying squirrels!).  Mostly I just have to curl up with him and cuddle until he's in a better mood.  Works every time. =)

Give him space and pick him something he likes, like chocolate sprinkled long johns from the grocery store! Really tho, DH prefers his space when he's in a crappy bummy mood. Me being touchy/feely with him just irritates him

When my husband is in a down mood, I distract him by doing something he really likes with him, whether it's watching a Bond movie together, or playing video games, or whatever. He also gets a kick out of lotto tickets, so we might walk over to the store and pick one up, and talk about what we would do if we won.

Acknowledging that he is in a bad mood helps. I get serious, drop what I'm doing and listen to what's bothering him. I give him a sympathetic look, hug him and it's usually over at that point, just venting a little or telling me the story of what happened brings him back.

At that point, I encourage him to just relax and I do the cooking/cleaning/whatever until he fully snaps out of it. It usually takes about 5 minutes, but if it lasts longer that's okay too.

I feed him!  Nothing cheers either of us up more than a delicious home-cooked meal.  I believe that saying that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach!

I love your answer, Missomally! :)

I should say I did initially give him space, too, I forgot about that!

Its so funny that a lot of us just give him good food.  I do the same.  He was bummed not long ago and I was so distraught for him because its so rare that he's down.  So, I asked him what he'd like to eat, ANYTHING and I'd make it.  So I did, and I got him beer and let him just sit around and watch basketball... without my usual commets/questions like, "why didn't he just braid ALL his hair?", "that tattoo is scary" or, "is that guy married?".  I think he appreciated it lol.

    I usually:

    1. Clean up the house

    2. Write him an email with a funny/cheesy poem that I compose

Bake him brownies, and sprinkle powdered sugar on top - his favorite. =)

@LaborOfLove- So cute about the border collie video. We have one so whenever FI is down I usually bring her over to give him kisses. Nothing melts his heart like his puppy.

I think I am with a lot of other girls on the food thing. Or just make a move on him and take it to the bedroom, that usually brings a smile to his face LOL (sorry TMI)

I have learned my FI either likes to just sit and cuddle, or be left alone. If I try too hard to cheer him up, it just annoys him. So I usually just let him know I am there for him, or act as a sounding board if he has some stressors he wants to talk about.
