My favorite book of all time is "She's Come Undone" by Wally Lamb.
I have read this book at least a dozen times, if not more.
I read it way before Oprah made it a book club selection - and when I found out she did, I actually cried b/c I knew that the AWESOME author would finally get the attention (and money!) he so richly deserves.
~~~
What book do you absolutely love?
hmmm that's a tough one.
there are some fantastically written books like the amazing adventures of kavalier and clay and middlesex. but i gravitate more towards nonfiction. i loved the glass castle by jeannette walls, and i devour just about anything on everest/mountain climbing and scuba diving.
my all time favorite book though? 101 dalmations. I probably read it at least 50 times when I was a kid.
Megan..hehehe, i read Time Travellers Wife and just didnt get it - funny how diff things for diff people
last week i finally read My Sisters Keeper, i dont like to read books or see movies with alot of hype but i finally read this and i was BALLING my eyes out at the end! it was a pretty enjoyable book that i could take or leave but then you get to a certain point and i was sobbing in my seat on the plane
im a huge stephen king fan so i cant go past anything written by him. the Talisman, the Stand and the Dark Tower series are my favs
I am somewhat spiritual so I love the Bible. Reading Psalms and Proverbs sometimes is to me very centering and calming.
Also love the following books: (I'm eclectic)
Where is Joe Merchant? (Jimmy Buffett)
The Davinci Code (Dan Brown and its sequel is coming out this fall btw)
ALL the Harry Potter books! (my son got me into it and we love them)
I'm a big reader from non-fiction to sci fi and everything in between but by far my favorite book is The Thorn Birds.... I try to read it once every year...it's freaking a-m-a-z-i-n-g!!!
I like "She's come undone" also!
But hands down I think the best novel prize goes to "The God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy. It's engrossing and immaculately constructed (form a technical stand point). Just amazing literature.
COurtney Crocker... I second The Thornbirds!!! Hundreds of pages of pure awesomeness.
Seriously, it's hard to rival.
I love The Time Traveler's Wife! Also, The Memory Keeper's Daughter is excellent! Ishmael is also very good! It's a little different and a bit dense, but it will definitely get you thinking! Life of Pi is great too! (Sorry, I read A LOT). And if you're simply looking for a beach read, ANY Red Dress Ink book will do!
I have tons of books (hoping to have a library soon), but I have not had the opportunity to read even a quarter of my collection. From the ones I have read so far, I have to say my fav is The DaVinci Code but I loved the Notebook and Angels and Demons.
@Eloping - I am a HUGE Stephen King fan too! I have almost all his books but unfortunately I have only read a few. My fav from the collection so far is Rose Madder.
I agree with MrsBee on The Glass Castle, I loved that one!
My all time favorite author though is David Sedaris! He is an incredible writer, & I have found myself embarassed a few times by laughing at the pool or on an airplane reading his books! I can't single out one of his, they're all fabulous!
I also love A Thousand Splendid Suns. I felt like I was on a roller coaster of emotion the whole time I read it!
even though it was really long (1100 pages!), I loved reading World Without End by Ken Follett. The sequel, Pillars of the Earth was equally good! I wish he would write more epic historial fiction novels!
My absolute favorite book is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. I've reread that book too many times to count!
I *loved* Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. I also loved Of Love and Shadows and House of the Spirits (Allende). Those are the first two that come to mind, but I have so many favorites!
FloridaMel...I also loved A Thousand Splendid Suns! I think I liked it more than The Kite Runner.
My all time favorite is Pride & Prejudice. Once you get used to the language, it's so witty, and I feel as if Jane Austen was way ahead of her time.
I would also like to recommend "The Alchemist" and "The Things They Carried." Sorry I've posted again, bees, but I was a journalism major in college with a minor in Comparative Literature so I looooove to read!
I love anything by Tom Robbins, especially Jitterbug Perfume and Half-Asleep in Frog Pajamas. Right now I'm re-reading Man's Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl. It's a dark book, but he is an amazing, insightful author.
@bearcub - agree with Pillars of the Earth! I can't wait to read World without End.
I also am a huge fan of TimeTraveler's Wife.
I also loved She's Come Undone (and have read it too many times to count!). In fact, it's been awhile so I might have to go dig it out yet again.
AHHH! I TOTALLY forgot about David Sedaris. Flipping brilliant, and I love his sarcasm!
David Sadaris is hilarious. I love him.
My favorite one is Love in a Time of Cholera.
I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn last summer for the first time and absolutely loved it! I also like The Time Traveler's Wife, Water for Elephants, and almost anything by James Patterson.
Even though it's suppose to be a Childrens Book (a lot of adults that I've talked to have read it, along with my oldest niece who reads at a college level) The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is a really great book!
I love Janet Evanovich for "brain candy" books. I also have read a large amount of the red dress ink books. Favorite book- I love Breakfast of Champions by Vonnegut. I enjoy the Jennifer Weiner books, too. I like mystery/psychological thrillers.
Fools rush in by Bill Carter. It was life changeing. But my favorites that a bit "igihter" are Emily Griffins books!
Memoirs of a Geisha--So wonderful (the book, definately not the movie)
Gone with the Wind
The great gatsby
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. It was a book I was forced to read in high school, but ended up being a book I couldn't put down. :)
So, I'm a reader...I read really fast and lots and recently picked up three books at a used book store and was wondering which one to start tonight. She's Come Undone was in the group. I will sign off and start it now.
My favs are too numerous to name them all:
Strager in a Strange Land
The Word
Oh, I can't remember and I have a good book to read. See ya!
Lolita, always and forever. Though I think I might be in the minority about that one...
Also loved The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Mr. Bee.
I've been totally captured by Stephen King's Dark Tower series. The first one is hard to get through, but the next six just get better and better!!
Confessions of a Shopaholic (and the entire series) Totally guilty pleasure of mine ;)
She's Come Undone is one of my favorite books also! And White Oleander by Janet Fitch. I read these before they were Oprah books too!
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides is amazing.
Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald
And I secretly love all the Shopaholic Books too!!!
Paulo Coelho is brillant: i love all of his books, but my favorite is definitely The Alchemist, which along with Le Petit Prince and Cry the Beloved Country are probably my Top Three books of all time.
Ooo this is hard. I really enjoyed Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. It was so long, but so engrosing. I loved that it wasn't over in a week.
The Shaara Trilogy if you like historical fiction. Specifically civil war. Addicting
I think the only books I can stand to read over and over and over again are the Harry Potter Series.
I love David Sedaris; The Lovely Bones was good, but sad, as was the Time Traveler's Wife; Jane Eyre is my favorite classic.
omg such great books already listed i loved pride & prejudice, she's come undone, the things they carried, life of pi!!! i see that the time traveler's wife has been listed so many times and i haven't read it yet!! i'm actually on my way out to barnes and noble and thought i'd see everyone's recommendations! i actually saw that it's being made into a movie so i def want to read it before it comes out!
i love so many books so i'll list some authors: kurt vonnegut, orson scott card, judith mcnaught, christine feehan. i also like a lot of historical romance novels (i know sooooooooooo cheesy but hey it's my guilty pleasure) so some authors there that i love... eliosa james, jillian hunter, julia quinn.
but my ultimate book of choice is ender's game by orson scott card. it's not about romance at all but it is an awesome book and i recommend it to everybody!!!
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis
Three Sisters Island trilogy by Nora Roberts
@FloridaMel - we must be book twins...
The Glass Castle is just amazing...and to know that it is a true story makes it even more amazing...
I also agree, David Sedaris is HYSTERICAL, I think my favorite is Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, but all of his books make me laugh out loud
If you aren't afraid of crying/a depressing but powerful story, The Kite Runner is just wonderful.
Also, can I just say that when I opened this post, I was having a feeling that everyone would be saying "Twilight?" Breathing a sigh of relief........
