Two come to mind off the top of my head:
- For my husband's birthday back when he was my boyfriend, I got him really good opening day tickets to see the Atlanta Braves and paid for the hotel we stayed in. He had never gone to see them play and had always been a huge fan. The tickets were expensive but it was totally worth it.
- Last Christmas (2010), I went in on a gift for my brother with my mom and husband. We got him tickets to see New Kids on the Block/Backstreet Boys. The idea came up because my brother skipped a NKOTB concert because it took place the night of my 21st birthday. He was so super excited about it.
I think my best one was a Bag of Holding for DH from Think Geek. It's a nod to Dungeons and Dragons, so it's incredibly nerdy, but it's also really useful too. With DH it's all about balancing the nerdy and the practical, lol.

Aww, these are awesome you guys. I love giving tickets :) I like that bag too!!!!
My ex was your typical army guy... We Were Soldiers is his favorite movie, and he'd lost a copy of the book that he'd had signed by the author at a book signing. I bought the book, hunted down the general in AL, mailed it to him with a note, and got it back with the most amazing inscription.
...and he lost it about a year later.
Oh fun!
Some I've seen:
- Old roommate received a DVD set of the BBC production of Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy from her parter. That took some internet sleuthing!
- When we were dating, I found a good pizza pan and glued new "packaging" on top to make it the "Soft Crust 2000" because my partner prefers pizza with a soft crust, but was a lazy student so just put it on the oven rack.
I'm sure there's lots more... but I can't think of them right now.
My FSIL's apartment building burned down last year just before Christmas (like the entire building- everyone lost EVERYTHING). For Christmas this year, I found a way to get replacement copies of all 4 of her high school yearbooks. Her 10 year reunion is coming up this year so she can take her senior yearbook with her and have her friends sign it again. She cried when she opened them!
I got FI an xBox 360 for Christmas. He is loving that.
My brothers, Dad, and I all pitched in to get my technology-challenged Mom a laptop. I did a ton of research to find one that wouldn't be too full of bells and whistles and stuff she wouldn't need. She uses it all the time now. =)
Got my Dad a cigar humidor. He has it proudly displayed on it's own table in the game room. haha
I gave my FI tickets to a Valentine's Day SU basketball game three years ago, which would've been a super awesome date... 'cept I got the stomach flu and he had to take a male friend, hahaha. I told him they'd probably end up on the kiss cam (sadly, didn't happen lol).
My fave creative gift was a jewelry box I made one year for my best friend's birthday. I painted it gold and glued a mixture of buttons, Moroccan-style tiles and a peacock pendant I bought at Michael's to the top. It was so beautiful, super fun to make and she truly loved it.
When my husband and I first found out we were expecting, he made an offhanded comment like "I can't imagine not being embarrassed about carrying around a diaper bag."
So I brought a navy blue diaper bag to a sporting goods store and had it completely done over with his favorite team's logo and colors. I even added a team mascot infant onesie and baby booties. He was so proud!
@DaneLady: Wow, I can't imagine losing EVERYTHING! That was really thoughtful and sweet of you to replace her yearbooks. Those are the types of things that often can't ever be replaced, so it's lucky she had someone as thoughtful as you in her life :) Hope she's doing okay and has been able to rebuild!
My best gift hasn’t been given yet but I still know he’s going to absolutely love it.
For V-Day, I got DH a vintage Apple computers poster from 1980 (I think it’s funny how something from the 80’s is now vintage). This probably sounds like a lame gift to most but I assure you, it’s not. DH has been a loyal Apple user for 15+ years (we actually own an independent Mac/iPhone/iPad development company). Over the years Apple has changed their logo countless times but DH’s favorite was when it was the rainbow. Apple hasn’t made anything with the rainbow logo in decades so the items that are out there are highly collectible (actually, just about any older Apple memorabilia is). I found the poster on ebay and spent a few nights ago in a bidding war with someone who apparently wanted it as bad as I did. I won the auction (YAY!) so now I just have to wait for it to get here. I’m going to have it professionally framed and matted and I hope to be able to hang it up in his office before giving it to him (I haven’t quite figured out how I’m going to pull that off yet). I don’t think I’ve ever been quite as excited about a giving a gift before. I can’t wait till V-Day!
I really want to brag about what I got my SO for his birthday this year, but I haven't given it to him and he knows who I am on the Bee so I don't want to risk him finding out! I'm so excited though, I don't think I'll ever top this birthday. Can't wait! I'm also pretty sure I'm more excited about his birthday than he is right now. Lol :)
@jocember: Haha, thanks- she is doing really well. She calls 2011 her "rebuilding year" and she had renter's insurance which helped a lot. She and her friends went out the night after the fire and got drunk doing karaoke... song choices included "we didn't start the fire", "firestarter", and the song that goes "the roof, the roof, the roof is on fire" or something. She said if she didn't find some humor in it and laugh, she would just sit and cry and that wouldn't solve anything! She's a pretty amazing person :)
Best gift I've given probably was to DH. We are into mountain biking and so two years ago we went up to Whister, BC for this event called KrankWorx. A couple of months later I'm looking on Flickr and I see a bunch of pictures from the event.
I found a shot of DH's favorite rider doing the winning trick.. and DH is in the background of the picture. He sticks out because he's tall and wearing white sunglasses. I knew I had to get it for him. I contacted the photographer and paid for the image and then framed it and gave it to DH for Christmas. He was like "THAT'S ME IN THE BACKGROUND!!!" It was fabulous.
Second best gift? Both of my former roommates (and very good friends) have gotten married in the past two years and I surprised both of them with their bridal bouquets as a gift. They were both on really small budgets and they couldn't swing the cost of an expensive bouquet, so I picked up the tab for them. There are always tears and it's such a great feeling to give them something that they both really really wanted.
Book written by his fav comedian, tucked inside two tix to comedian's upcoming show
I gave my sister a makeup traveler case. She loves it and has been usign it ever since! that was about 5 years ago.
@mittens111211: The bouquet gift is an awesome idea!
(KrankWorks pict too.. I've always wanted to check that out)
I wrote to my SO's favourite band and asked them to sign his birthday card :) He loved it! That was definitely my finest gift giving moment
Also, once I folded 1000 paper cranes for my best friend so that she could have a wish
I'm a very sappy, sentimental person so I think all the best gifts are the ones with special meaning and not necessarily the kind that cost a bomb (though those are great too, haha!)
i try to make christmas and birthdays for hubby as special as i can - being the eldest son of hard working migrate parents he never really felt special growing up
his birthday last year was a week at Ayres Rock in outback australia - 5 star accomodation, one night we had dinner under the stars with an orchastra and private helicopter ride, sunrise and sun set trips to see the colors of the rock. he loved it
once I folded 1000 paper cranes for my best friend so that she could have a wish
thats awesome!
The biggest monetary gift was a truck to my then-boyfriend. Not a good decision.
The best gift I've ever given was a 3D ultrasound to find out the gender of our, now, son. FI had no idea it was coming, I told him we wouldn't be finding out for weeks, and he was so excited!
I took my sister to the beach for her 21st birthday. (I saved and saved and saved money and spent a good chunk of my tax return). I got us a top floor room at the beginning of the boardwalk where all the action is and the prices are sky high. I took us to dinner plannned things for every night of the week, took care of lunch and all the events everyday and took her to one of the best bars in the United States... It was fun but I was sad she never said thank you.
I don't think I'm going to be doing super nice gifts for anyone other than my kids and FI from now on lol.
This might not count but I'm planning a secret 30th anniversary dance for my grandparents at our wedding. Were super broke and they are paying for the rest of it that we couldn't cover. They never had a wedding they had a quick courthouse ceremony and spent the day in Disney World. I want to give them their "first dance" 30 years later tehe. I couldn't find another way to announce their 30tth or say thank you so this is the best I could think up.
I am a fine artist. I love to paint, draw, create fun stuff, etc. so I made a painting for my FI's parents to thank me for buying a drop dead gorgeous graduation dress for me (years back when I was graduating high school). It was of a photo I took of my now FI (we were dating back then) and his younger brother standing by the ocean, dipping their feet in the water and looking at the sunset. I just felt it belonged to my FI's family once I finished it.
It made his mother cry and they hang it proudly in their home to this day. They actually suprised me and bought me a mini laptop for school since I was just starting college at the time. That was so unexpected, I just cried happily afterwards because I was so happy they were touched by the painting and was still in shock I actually had a computer! Blessings others is the greatest gift :)
The one I'm proudest of was getting my older brother (VERY hard to buy for) the ESPN encyclopedia of college football for Christmas the year it came out. He LOVED it and was shocked that I had been able to get him something that he would actually like.
The boudoir pics I did for my FI come in pretty close though. :-D
@KnisleyToBee: You sound like you have the BEST relationship with your FILs. Brings a smile to my face. :-)
@village_skeptic: They are a great pair of people and I love them very much! :) Thanks.
The photo books of our wedding pics to my parents and my in laws... My mom cried... and his parents acted like they'd never seen a photobook (they're actually printed on the pages?!?!)... So it was really special for them too :)
i gave my fi a helicopter ride over the grand canyon for his birthday. it was the first birthday we spent together. he loved it so much. i haven't been able to top it since.
aparently the best gift i gave my mom/stepdad was a leaf blower 5-6 years ago. i still hear at least a dozen times a year how much they love it.

Hi Bees!
I'm one of those people who takes great pride in being as creative as possible with my gifting, and most of the time (not always, of course), I hit it out of the freaking ball park. Sometimes it takes me a while and I'm down to the very last minute, but I usually come through with flying colors. Its something I pride myself in... obviously. :)
Anyway, what are some awesome gifts YOU'VE given?
Some of mine:
-About to give my fiance a skydiving certificate for his bday. He'll be shocked and surprised and elated. He's wanted to do this forever, but seems like he's forgotten.
-Also gave FI a road bike for his 30th birthday. We'd only been dating 6 months, but I was in LURVE and knew he'd love to get on the road again so didn't mind dropping $800. He got me one in return for my bday too!
-Very good false Louboutins to my cousin/MOH who LOVES shoes but would never spend the cash for real ones
-Gave my dad a GC to finally get that tattoo he'd always wanted
-Wine making GC to take my wine-o mom and make our own batches! So much fun.
