hi bees!
i thought of this question recently, because arguably the coolest thing i've ever done happened yesterday! i was a model in a photoshoot for a product that is set to debut in a few months. by no means is this a common occurance for me haha-it was sort of a fluke, but i went with it! it just got me thinking about how that was probably the coolest thing i've ever done (which is also kind of sad if you think about it lol) and it got me wondering about what some other people's "coolest thing" may be. i'm sure there are lots of you with really awesome stories, so spill! :)
My Husband and I got to play with adolecent tigers on our Honeymoon in Thailand. That's my thing so far.
Flew on one of the presidental campaign plains with a few cabinet members and the campaign chiefs across the country. Seriously, one of the moments when you look around and ask yourself "how the hell did I get here?".
I graduated with my BA at 20 years old.
I was accepted into a Ph.d. program this year at 22.
@aliavenue: That is FREAKING AMAZING! Congrats, you should be very proud of yourself!
@tksjewelry: wow! will we be seeing you one day in politics?? ;)
@aliavenue: thats incredible!! congratulations! what are you getting your ph.d in?
@supervixen: You might have 10 years ago, my political days are done, but I have done a lot of local tv (in the areas that I worked) and some national am radio. I am way to old to be sleeping on folding tables, eating no doze for lunch, and replacing all my tires and windows. I will leave that to the young people. It is an easy business to get burned out on if you are not willing to work in DC.
@supervixen: Thanks guys! I'm studying Human Resouce Management :)
Hmm...I've gone skydiving, I have climbed one of the top 10 most active volacanos on the planet to the point where I was climbing over lava, and hmm...I once decided, on a whim, to travel to Guatemala. When I got there, my friend and I pointed at a location on the map and said "okay, let's just go there" and set off without a plan/accomodations, etc. in mind.
I hope all of this will someday be overshadowed by summiting Mt Kilimanjaro!
@tksjewelry: i know politics aren't for the faint of heart, i didn't realize it was that tough though!
@Miss Orchard: that sounds so cool! ive always wanted to point someplace on a globe and just GO :) must've been really fun!
I don't know if this counts as "cool" or not. One of the things I'm most proud of:
My and my younger brother's biological father left us when I was 3. When I was 18, his Grandmother (my great-grandmother) died and I went to the funeral. He gave me a check for $2,000. He told me that $1000.00 was supposed to be for me and $1000.00 for my younger brother. At the time, my Mother was going through her third divorce and desperately trying to provide for us. We gave the money to her.
Can I list 3?
1. Graduated from Smith College (Ada Comstock Scholar/non-trad. student)
2. Professional massages to the "rich & famous".
3. Rode waverunner with husband through mangroves in Mexico last year.
I traveled with a popular band (even got to go to Canada) in 2007. I also did a ton of live photoshoots and interviews with bands in 2008.
@colli459: I agree with tksjewelry-that definitely counts :)
@creativeplannertobee: dang! ...can you tell us who you've massaged?? lol I'm so curious, I bet you have tons of stories :)
@Rouquine: that's awesome! what band did you travel with?
I'm sorry, I have 2 things things that I think are way cool.
1. I went on one of those HUGE swing things (I think there called Sky Coasters) overlooking the Royal Gorge in Colorado with my uncle. It was probably the scarriest thing I've ever done, but looking back, it was so much fun.
2. I interviewed a professional hockey player for a school paper about 6 years ago. He and I spent so much time together that we're still good friends (even though he doesn't play here anymore) and he's coming to the wedding.
Kayaked with orcas off the San Juan Islands. Had a mother and baby orca breach about 30 feet from the kayak. It was one of the most amazing and intense moments of my life.
I reeeeeaaallly hope another one will be this May - I'm trying to finish my dissertation and get my PhD by then.
@creativeplannertobee: Yeah Smithie!!! Go you!!! And congrats on being an Ada Comstock Scholar, too - that is amazing. (I can't claim to be a Smithie, but I have spent some quality time at the Sophia Smith archive.)
@colli459: That is a wonderful thing, and it definitely counts.
I sang the national anthem at a 76ers game. It was crazy scary, but so exhilarating. :)
@tksjewelry: @mightywombat: @supervixen: Thank you all so much! I really appreciate it. I'm sure my brother would say the same if he were aware of all this, haha :)
@creativeplannertobee: Congrats, that's fantastic!
@Fall_In_Love22: Wow! That's really awesome that they're going to your wedding :)
@OoOTifsterOoO: That sounds super intense. Not something I could ever do, way to be!
@Rouquine: Congrats! That sounds like it would be a ton of fun.
Hmm i've been to every continent except Antactica (someday I will go there!!) for extended independent travel. I have also spent almost a year of my life on research ships in the middle of the ocean doing marine biology research. Got to go to MIT for grad school...there's been a lot of amazing things i've been lucky enough to do!
I survived a 10,000 km cross-Canada motorcycle trip on a Honda older than me as a passenger the whole way! We went from northern Ontario down south, out to the west coast and back in 10 driving days, even driving through a tornado and the Rockies at night. Totally nuts.
I have a few "cool" things I've done: skydiving from 11,000 ft, graduating college w/ a 3.9 (so close!), 4.0 in university, becoming a home owner at 22 and most recently chasing hump back whales in Cabo a month ago! I live to experience as many cool things as I can :)
As for everyone else who posted their coolest experiences in this thread, one word: amazing!!
I swam with dolphins. That's the coolest thing I can think of, but I don't think I've had a completely boring life either. Oh, I also swam across a lake, (several times, different occasions,) and it wasn't a tiny lake. I guess some people might think that was cool.
:-)
What a neat thread!
I have no idea what mine is, let me think.
I helped save my dad's life by calling 911 when he had a massive heart attack in 2003. I had a lot of guilt over it for a long time (I should have called sooner and not been so hesitant, etc) but I also know that he would have died at our house if I hadn't finally made the call.
I saved up 60k and bought a house last year, and that's been pretty cool, too (I obviously no longer have the 60k, though, haha).
I have a few more but they seem silly so I'll stick with those two.
Yes, great one...love hearing everyone's cool experiences.
Wow, juliepants that sounds like a life altering experience...must have been difficult.
Well, I have had some great experiences....
I got to sit in the audience at the Oprah Winfrey show in Chicago.
I flew in a helicopter and landed on a glacier in Alaska.
Went to Mardi Gras twice spur of the moment.
1. I went to Peru on a mission's trip.
2. I kicked cancer's ass. Okay so maybe modern medicine, and doctor's did that. But, it's a big part of my life. I have been in remission for 19 years.
3. I was on tv for raising money for Leukemia, and Lymphoma society by selling Malley's candy bars.
4. I was a grand Marshall in a local parade.
5. I got to go to Disney World for 10 days from Make a wish. I always joke that I beat the system. It's a terrible joke but when I went I was on my death bed.
@siegeli: It was a life-changing moment for all of us, for sure.
I probably should have mentioned that I didn't just sit around watching my dad have a heart attack and not calling 911 for no reason. It was really unclear (to me at the time) that he was having one. He wasn't complaining about chest pain or having any "movie-like" symptoms; he was trying to throw up (but couldn't) and looked awful. He thought he had bad indigestion.
I ended up volunteering for and then working for the Heart and Stroke Foundation for a year after that to educate people (mostly kids) about heart health and the signs of heart attacks. So yeah, nausea - and DENIAL! - are huge warning signs but most people don't call in time because they're like me and don't want to say, "Hi, 911? Yeah my dad is trying to barf and he doesn't look so great...."
@loch_ness: That is awesome. :)
Skiing in the Swiss Alps and listening to the roar of the snow melting further down. The sound was indescribable.
@MASPA: I was just thinking that haha.
I guess the coolest thing I've done was buying a condo when I was 19.
I have two :
1) I went skydiving once! Super amazing fun!
2) I went to see David Copperfield and managed to get myself on stage for his final act! He made me disappear, lol. And I met him back stage after.
Some of my "cool" things kind of pale in comparison to the other bees, but I'll play!
-I built houses in New Orleans for Habitat for Humanity in 2010
-I've done a lot of traveling in the USA with my FI which has been an awesome experience.
-Moving to Southern California from Ontario, Canada.
I can't think of much else that is out of the norm. Some of the bees here have had some exciting lives.
I have been skydiving.
I joined the Army when I was 18.
I made sergeant by the time I was 22.
I was deployed as a medic with and infantry platoon shortly before my 23rd birthday, and didn't come home until after I turned 24.
I got to swim with sea lions in Mexico.
I walked on a stress-fractured femur for 4 months before it was diagnosed.
I have been to Vegas twice with my FI and didn't come home married either time!
I had a liver biopsy with no pain meds.
I played NCAA lacrosse in college.
I met Pauly Shore at a comedy club in Iowa.
I didn't realize until I typed it out that I've done a lot of pretty neat things in my 30 years :)
What an awesome thread! I've hiked the trail to Machu Picchu and gone hiking in the Swiss Alps!
I have:
Gone skydiving
Was a part of the official pep-band of the BC Lions (a CFL team), so I got tickets to all the home games plus spare tickets! (plus got to play on the field every game :P)
I have done the Canucks (NHL) national anthem 4 times now
(funny thing is...I don't really care for sports)
Was the best euphonium player in British Columbia, and so I was flown out to Ontario to play in the national band
Ah...so most of it is music stuff. But it still counts to me
