The cutest I've ever seen are Mrs. Lovebug, and her typewriter theme at various locations (especially the movie theatre one)
We're getting married in Aruba, and their native language is Papiemento so I chose words like "kindness", "love", "friendship" etc... and translated them into Papiemento for the table name cards.
I agree with beesknees, Mrs. Lovebug's were pretty awesome
this might be a little too much info about me because i am obsessed with our dog, but he is becoming our mascott/ theme and we are doing a variation of mrs. lovebugs idea instead of a typewriter, my dog will be holding a table number in his mouth in a different LA location! there are a lot of ideas on the knot website too!
I always like the idea of putting pictures of you and your FI at that age on them. That way, tables are still numbered to make it easy (I once spent a good 15 minutes wandering a reception wondering how in the heck to find "Paradise Cove" or whatever the table was called), but it's also cute and personalized. Mrs. Lime did this, http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/07/25/numbering-the-years-er-tables/ if you want to see what it looks lilke.
Check out the table numbers on this Knot bio:

I went to this wedding last Saturday, and the table numbers were really great. (OK, I'm biased, the bride is a relative).
I have 24 tables and will have table "songs" from the years we were born. I will have my dj put together a 20-30 second snippet of the songs in the order they will go up to the buffet (double buffet).
We are doing 1, 2, etc. on wine bottles (idea borrowed from Martha).
My friend did this - her and her now huspand took pictures of themselves holding up posterboards with the table number on it - each table number/picture is in a differnt place. One was on the beach, one was in a park, one was at an amusement park, ski slope etc - then they put the date they went there etc. They did this over the year leading up to their wedding.
I'm having my reception at grandparent's house and to go with the home/outdoors theme I'm going to home depot and using house numbers for each table and putting them on a frame stand.
We're either doing famous couples that aren't famous to everyone (EX: Hurley & Libby from Lost, Kif & Amy from Futurama) or Futurama Characters. We are both HUGE fans of Futurama but very few guests are. OH WELL! I've even considered Dharma stations because we are also HUGE Lost fans! :)
I've seen this done a few times -- tables by birthyear (1983, 1984, etc.) or age (1, 2, etc.) with corresponding pictures of the bride and groom. Guests like to walk around and see all the photos!
I am thinking of doing pictures of dogs from the local shelter that are up for adoption. I am considering doing a donation to the shelter instead of favors so I was thinking it would e a cute tie in. Plus I have 4 wine bottle stoppers that I got as favors from other weddings, so I don't want to do favors.
FI and I both went to Ohio University which is known for it's, um, exciting nightlife. Our plan (as of today, it will probably change before our wedding in 16 months) is to name our tables after names of OU bars. To an outsider it might sound a little strange, but anyone who knows us knows how much OU means to our relationship. This is just a cheeky way of incorporating it.
This couple used their ages as table numbers and put photos of themselves at that age.

I also love Mrs. Lovebugs table numbers: http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/02/07/have-typewriter-will-travel/
My wedding is in Kentucky, where I grew up. We are thinking of naming the tables after Derby winners.
I read on someone else's post that they are letting all the kids coming to their wedding chose the table names! I think its cute and it could turn into a family tradition!
My FI and I live in Spain. He is Spanish and I am American. We've travelled to: Ireland, Morocco, Portugal, France...you get the point! So, my thought was to use a picture from each country that we've been to for the table numbers. This way it's personalized, a common interest point for all of the guest (they are there for you so they'd love to see pics of you) and colourful and fun!
I really love Miss Peep Toe's table numbers! Simple and classic yet very memorable and totally cute!
friends of ours are big movie buffs and named each table after one of their favorite movies, and put a dvd copy of that movie on the table as a gift for the person that sat in the marked chair. They also took it a step further and photoshopped their faces into the movie posters and had them hung around the room. Could also be done with your favorite books
Oo I really like the ones that were cards with images of the bride and groom at that age! It was really cute!
i saw one where there was a number printed on paper and laminated. then it was dropped in a tall skinny vase of water w/ flowers. the number floated in the vase to show the table number...it was great for a beachy theme.
I think we are doing this. We are printing black and white pictures of us in different places and we are putting them on black stationary then below the picture is a discription of an event that happened at that place for us. We are also putting a black and white baby picture of him on his parents table with his birthday, time he was born, etc and a black and white baby picture of me on my parents table (same as his). The places we went will be the titles of each of the tables
I was going to do wedding traditions of different cultures of places we've been or lived...
For example a photo of a Ugandan wedding and then a blurb about Ugandan wedding tradition, coupled with why that place is important in our lives...
We'll see if that happens. Our back up plans are National Parks (with those gorgeous national park post cards) or vintage fruit box labels.
the theme of our wedding is "meant to bee" corny? yes...but i love bees and i think even my SO has developed a soft spot for them...anyway...while shopping around a local Michael's we came across wooden cut our of bees that we are going to paint and put on a stick...our center pieces of little bee hive cakes on top of upside down flowerpots with a saucer on to...the sticks will be stuck into the cakes...i know this doesn't sound too hot...but you have to see the visual to get it...once i have one, i'll post it...
ms circus peanut! How appropriate for this site!! I'd love to see some pictures of your wedding afterwards!! Or maybe some of the "bee's" wedding accessories you already have!!
Aggies are known to play "42" and to honor our alma mater we used dominoes as escort cards and my husband made a scaled up version (two full sets of double six dominoes) for each table. We had a sweatheart table at the reception so we of course had the double 1.
We named our tables after subjects and our signs were made to look like mini chalkboards (wooden picture frames with black paper and the subject in white felt letters).
