I think totes are a great medium for gift-giving...they are reusable bags after all! You can also get them really cheap since they are so popular. I don't really have an opinion either way on the tote bags.
I got them for my ladies with their names on them. They're cute, practical, and can hold all of their other gifts. :) And found them for $5! You can't beat that
I wasn't going to do any totes, but I took advantage of those little personalized ones that were on sale at The Knot for $5. They are really small. I'm just going to use them to put their other gifts in.
The main reason I went with the totes is that my BMs will be moving between lots of different places during the day. They can put their stuff in it that they would like to have with them like an extra pair of shoes or a wrap or whatever they want. This way if someone needs to gather up all of the bags, we can tell them what they look like and that person can go gather. Also, they are all personalized with their names so there's no confusion about which bag belongs to whom.
I agree with okpharmbride. You are all over the place to day of, you have stuff to carry around, plus is serves as gift wrap and a container for all the other gifts! I handmade (ie. sewed from scratch) mine and they turned out awesome. My girls both love purses, so they will be excited about another bag.
They were inexpensive and cute and will hold all of their other gifts. They can use it to lug around their makeup the day of and then throw them out if they'd like!
It holds stuff day of... like extra shoes, makeup, etc. We're having brunch, getting ready at the church, and ending the day at the reception venue... it's nice to have a bag to carry!
I think people get them b/c they're easy to get and personalize.. though, they're not really personal. I've got one that I use on days where i have to throw a bunch of junk in one location for a few mobile hours. I took off all the bridesmaid related ribbon etc, though.
Yeah I got the personalized one's on theknot that were $5 as well! great for putting their gifts in...
I've received bags as bridesmaids' gift a couple of times and they're just really handy on the day of the wedding. I remember the bride giving me some of her personal items to keep safe and I just stashed everything in my handy dandy tote bag that night. They're also re-usable so I use them when I go to the beach, or sometimes when I go to the grocery store... so much more eco-friendly than plastic/paper bags!
I bought cheap ones for like $1 on cheaptotes.com. I'm putting everything else in it.
I agree with the all girls!! It's great to just put their gifts in and who can have to many totes? I'm getting them for my BMs because they are reusable and I'm very eco friendly! lol green all the way!
But if you don't think that they would like/need the totes then don't worry about it!
@hotchild - i used to, so I totally get it, but i always managed to find room for one more, especially after a trip to Canal Street...but yeah, so much more closet space in LA!
Who doesn't love a good tote? I am a junkie for personalized gifts too! I did a personalized lunch tote instead of a larger tote. They turned out really cute!
I got my ladies all vera bradley tote bags with matching wallets. Vera is pretty popular around here so I knew they'd love them!
ive never got it either - im so not an initial tote type of person. this is what im giving mine:
etsy piece of jewlery that goes with the wedding to be work with their BM dress. each piece is different, the colors arent super "matchy" with the wedding, but they all go together well.
small jo malone perfume. i LOVE her perfumes and they are made to layer scents on top of each other. i got a different one for each girl, based on what they like.
i got them each a small purse of some type. my MOH is soooo not a Coach girl, so i got her a Marc Jacobs mini bag. another BM got a Coach mini purse, another BM a mini Louis (gotta love the sale at Saks!), and a Chloe bag for the last.

So I've noticed that the majority of brides get their BMs totes as a gift (or so it seems from surfing the web, anyway). I'm wondering why these are so popular. I personally am not doing totes because it's not something I'd be excited to get - I already have a ton of tote bags in every color I can think of, including a bunch of personalized ones I got as gifts through various high school/college events/organizations. My friends seem to be similarly well-supplied with totes.
This is obviously not a huge issue, but I am very curious since few wedding items are this ubiquitous. So, why totes?
