You can buy a sample 1-2 months before and then have it altered right away. If you definitely want to order it 3-4 months before is usually recommended, but some designers can take up to 6 months.

@Moraz:  If you’re ordering new from a salon, I think 3-4 months is cutting it too fine to get it in and have alterations done. Six months in advance is a better timeline. If you are happy with a sample, secondhand or a replica dress then 3-4 months is probably fine.

Keep in mind, though, that you have a lot less choice in that situation. If you simply can’t find a sample or a secondhand dress that you love then you’re kind of screwed at that point. Replicas are an option but again, you’re taking the chance that it will come in and you won’t like it, and by that point you are a month or so out and still have to find a dress.

@Moraz:  I’m getting married in May and I went dress shopping in January (4 month engagement!). If I didn’t buy a sample, I was very limited to which designers I could choose, based on who offered rush orders. I did end up buying a sample, and they told me if I ordered it new, it would come in 5 months. Ack.

Just remember you can always take a dress in you can’t let it out!!! Order it 6 months out or you risk a rush charge on the dress AND alterations

@Moraz: It depends on the designer I think. Mine took about 9 months to arrive (Jim Hjelm). I think you will be seriously limiting your options by leaving it to 4 or 5 months prior to wedding and you may end up really regretting that.

If it’s going to be a handmade dress, order 6+ months out. Trust me, I ordered mine this weekend for this June and was told it won’t be in until late May/early June (it’s an Alfred Angelo).
