Y’all. I went on an interview for my dream job 5 weeks ago (on Wednesday). The interview went really well, they seemed interested. I had to take a little test as well, which I aced. But since then, they haven’t contacted me! I e-mailed them twice, and each time they were cordial and said they’re still interviewing other candidates.
I feel like if they were no longer interested, they would tell me and not keep stringing me along. But how long do I wait to hear something back? And what if they EVENTUALLY decide they don’t think employment will work out between us? This just seems like a crazy amount of time, and I don’t know at what point I should cut my losses. Any advice?

I waited 3+ weeks to hear back from a job I was really interested in – by this time I had already accepted another position. The other job was very dissapointed, but they took FOREVER! I’m glad I ended up where I did, and I have to say – waiting that long to schedule a SECOND interview doesn’t bode well for the employer’s image!

@LizLemon: I am currently on week 4. It just depends on the company, the size, their manpower, etc. The company before that, I interviewed w/7 people, took 3 tests, did a job shadow & they sent me a automated canned email passing on my candidacy! The job market it not the same as it used to be, so I am thinking they are taking a longer time selecting candidates.
ETA: I would keep applying to other jobs you’re interested in in the meantime!

I waited multiple months one time. I continued to keep in touch every 8-10 days or so (and kept getting cordial replies that this or that was holding up their process).
Eventually, they went on a hiring freeze and hired no one.

Honestly, after an interview, I’ve always heard back within a week…

You never know what the circumstances are…I would keep looking for other jobs as if this was off the table (with the same level of seriousness) but keep checking in with them every few weeks.
My husband interviewed for a job in September and didn’t hear back until just before Thanksgiving! They finally told him they chose another candidate but now they wanted to interview him for a different position. He interviewed in December, and got the job in mid-January. That’s a very long turnaround, but he loves his job now…so you never know!

I agree with @MaraBeth about looking for other jobs but checking in periodically. They are probably going with someone else, but you never know. They may have really liked you but other people are more experienced/know someone in the company.
I heard recently from a small company I interviewed with over a month ago. I hadn’t heard a word and assumed they gave the job to someone else when the ad was taken down. They claimed there was a hold up in the hiring process and picked up as if nothing had happened. I hope that happens for you too!

I’m still waiting on a job I applied to ages ago… I think I didn’t get it. 😛
I wish employers would contact EVERYONE they interviewed, whether it’s positive or negative news.

Forever. Well, it’s been almost 2 years now, so I think they’re just not contacting me.

I think the longest for me was a month… always a rejection. But A friend of mine waited 2 months and then landed the job she’s been at for the past 3 years… fingers are crossed for you!

I got offered a position 2 months after interviewing for a job one time, which I turned down. They tried to convince me to quit the job I had! Who wants to leave a job to go work somewhere that takes that long to accept someone at entry level?

Funny that I saw this today, because I recently applied for a nutrition position and I waited 4 days for the phone call that I finally received today. I had the interview today, and I start saturday! This is the longest wait I’ve had!

Glad to see this topic. I interviewed for a job two weeks ago, tomorrow. I have been freaking out that I didn’t get a call back for the second round. The interview seemed to go *so* well, and my experience was right in line. But apparently all hope isn’t lost yet. I guess I’ll e-mail them tomorrow to see how the process is going.

I called the company last Thursday to see where everything stood (because I just needed some closure), and the HR lady told me that unfortunately, even though the interviewing group really liked me, the position had been filled. She said that she would definitely keep my information on file though, since I had made an impression. I was disappointed, but I was glad to finally have an answer.
BUT TODAY I received an email from the same HR lady. She said some things had changed and that they were looking for another person for the same position because the workload had gotten pretty sizeable. YAY. Second interview next week!

Going on week 4.
I’ve already come to terms with the fact that the job probably isn’t mine but I just have a feeling they’ve already filled the position and flat out lied to me when they said I’d receive notice. I just haven’t called because the last 2 times I called I got the same general HR response so I took that as “don’t call us, we’ll call you” cue.
