I bought some Amy's Organic Mac & Cheese
It was SO BAD. So bad. I think it's ruined mac and cheese for me. That's what I get for not getting Kraft I guess, lol.
Share! What's the worst "health food" thing you've tried? My husband can't do sushi...which CAN be healthy but, I guess it depends how you're looking at it =]
I hate tofu. HATE IT. It's something about the texture, but I won't even eat it when it's chopped us (like in egg drop soup) or all ground up (like in vegetarian burritos). I know it's there, and I just can't choke it down. Ugh.
Ohhh, I love the Amy's soy cheeze macaroni and cheese!
As for tofu, I actually don't mind it "in" stuff, like Amy's meals, miso soup, etc., but I hate hate hate the tofu cream cheese. Ick.
Oh all of Amy's stuff is horrible, IMO. It's like they couldn't find organic spices, so they just didn't add any. lol I'm not a huge fan of Whole Foods prepared foods because of the same reason.
@ejs4y8 - I read your post and thought "WHAT?"....then I realized you said Amy's. Try Annie's. Much better. Even the kids will eat it even though they still prefer Kraft.
@Mrs. Spring - I cannot even bring myself to try tofu. I've tried and I chicken out at the last minute. so many people rave about it. For me, it is also the texture I cannot get past.
I tried some organic mushroom risotto in a cup once. It was horrible. I ended up throwing the whole thing away after the first two bites.
I think I'm partial to Amy's because I eat dairy-free and lots of Amy's stuff is non-dairy. You would not believe how many Lean Cuisines/Smart Ones have dairy ingredients!
Mmm... I love tofu. Still working on how best to cook it. I'd have to say that in general the processed "health" foods are the ones I don't care for. I especially dislike Boca burgers in all varieties.
This is so funny, I literally JUST finished eating an Amy's meal at my desk (chili and rice) and it was good. I LOVE the Annie's meals, especially the rice mac and cheese since I can't eat wheat :)
I guess I like most healthfoods... ;)
Soy Joy bars. I got a bunch for free and managed to eat some of them, but I gave the rest away. They're like little sticks of cardboard.
What kind of sicko masochist made up tofu cream cheese? How does that even sound like a good idea?!
Mrs. Spring: for people who can't have dairy. It's nasty though and I just have peanut butter instead. I miss cream cheese though :o(
I cannot stand SoyJoy bars. They are so gross and taste-less. I do, however, like tofu especially in stir fry.
Mrs. Spring: haha. It's not so bad. Especially since I was feeling sick for like a year and couldn't figure out why. Now I feel 100000000% better :o)
@ shortcherriez and bananafishfever: The worst thing I've ever eaten HANDS DOWN was a Soy Joy bar. I don't even know what flavor it was, but it was beyond horrible. I'll never make that mistake again.
I had an organic Mac and cheese before, but don't remember the name. It had a bunny on the front. It was OK, but I wouldn't get it again.
Some terrible things I've had are: soy joy (thought it would be awesome, couldn't stand the taste) and these dried edemame bits, it was SO bad. The smell made me almost want to hurl.
I have to agree about the Soy Joy bars... those are NASTY! Do they even make them anymore?? I don't see how they can stay in business! Also, ANYTHING by the "Active Lifestyle" brand is GROSS. I mistakenly bought some oatmeal from them, and it was like eating Elmer's Glue, NO JOKE!! Ewwwwwwww!!
Man, I love Amy's whole line of food and anything from Whole Foods. I just usually can't justify the cost! I also LOVE LOVE LOVE tofu. I can't think of a health food I hate. I definitely don't eat enough veggies, though. I like them, just too lazy to prepare them. This thread is making me hungry!
Actually, I'm allergic to dairy and so I have dairy free cream cheese and sour cream .. I think it's tofu. It doesn't taste that bad! Seriously!
I love tempeh, but hate tofu, plus I think it's incredibly bad for women that have a history of breast cancer in their family. I love interesting grains, and will eat all of them save for quinoa- I'm really sensitive to bitter tastes, and quinoa has bitterness to it no matter how it's prepared with me. Oh and I will NEVER understand my FMIL's love of Aloe Vera juice- she juices the huge leaves and drinks the slimey stuff *shudder* that one I can't do, lol!
I've eaten and enjoy most health foods, like kefir, kombucha, tempeh, acai, fermented oatmeal, vegan mayo/cheeses, seitan, coconut water, lacto-fermented garlic, lacto-fermented lemonade, hemp milk, oat milk, etc. I don't go looking for vegan substitutions, however, they just usually find me :P I'll try anything someone gives me though, as long as it's vegetarian! :)
Oh I had this pot pie I think by Annie's and it was nasty! No taste to the crust and the filling was gross and runny.
Last time I went to the Chicago Diner (in North Halstead?) I ordered the raw plate....bad bad choice!
Amazing Grass was TERRIBLE. It's like a protein powder I put in a smoothie. It has all kinds of good stuff for you, like wheatgrass and seaweed and pomengranite, etc. It made the smoothie chalky and tasted so awful. I almost puked. I probably should've been a little more prepared...the word grass is in the title, right? But no, I thought it'd be fine in a smoothie. Terrible stuff.
Omg soy joys are naaaasty. I had a Lara bar that was bad once too. Like birdseed!! I like tofu when it's cooked right and in miso soup. It's an acquired taste tho I think. The baked kind they hAve at the elephant bar is how I got started!
I really enjoy tofu, as long as its prepared well and actually has flavor. The consistency did take some getting used too. I remember my mom making it once while I was in high school, and the only thing I could compare it to was meat-flavored Jello. Now I like that jiggly consistency!
Soy Joy bars are HORRIBLE!!! Everytime I see the commercials, I want to yell out to the people, "Don't do it!!!"
Some of the Lara Bars are crazy good. I love the cherry pie one. But some of them are kind of weird for me, and the earlier comparison to bird food is spot on.
I am not a big fan of most "health" foods. We just try to eat lots of fruits and veggies, a lot chicken, some beef and pork, and try to go light on the carbs. Our rule of thumb these days-if it wasn't a food 100 years ago we try not to eat it.
Cherry pie flavored? That sounds yummy! Republic of Tea has a tasty cherry green tea that I love. I bet it'd be delish.
Good rule, tessabella! That sounds like something my DH would say. Too bad i like all kinds of weirdo foods!
a raw vegan lasagna.....that's "raw" as in uncooked fruits-veggies-nuts......i don't mind raw, just not the lasagna.......yuk
yes! my friend said she wished she had a camera to capture my expression during the first and ONLY bite. especially since it was MY idea to go to a raw vegan restaurant. like i said, i don't mind raw......don't even mind vegan..............just definitely will not do raw vegan lasagna again!
I tried Amy's mac and cheese the other day and loved it, lol. I love health food; tofu, vegan, raw, etc. I don't like anything I've ever tried by Kashi, especially their cookies. I bought oatmeal dark chocolate and it tasted like cardboard. But I don't know that their food really qualifies as "healthy" or "diet friendly."
Kashi cereals are good. But i don't like sweet cereals for the most part. I also love grape nuts, though.
The Amy's mac and cheese box is sitting in my trash can still and it grossed me out just looking at it, which totally prompted me to come back and visit the thread, lol. Tofu doesn't go with mac noddles very well to me.
Soy milk. I don't know if it's the specific brand I had (can't remember what it was) but I took one sip and gagged. I'll stick with my regular skim milk, thanksmuch.
Oh God! My FI and I tried this Soy bean "meat"... It was terrible! I couldn't get the taste out of my mouth. We tried to boost it with barbecue sauce for burgers or tomato sauce for meatloaf but nothing worked for me... Surprisingly my FFIL actually liked it.
@cookie82 - Some soy milks are really bad (Edensoy comes to mind) but some are great. I think Silk is the best.
I like most healthy foods...with many of them (tofu, tempeh, etc), it really just depends on how you prepare it. Come to think of it, that applies to almost all foods (meats, fish, vegetables, fruits) - freshness, quality, and preparation make a big difference.
Zen Soy chocolate soy milk (the one with the panda on it) is SO delicious :o)
On that note, 8th Continent has a good soy milk. I prefer any vanilla or chocolate though to plain. Ick. I'm not really lactose intolerant anymore though so I don't have to drink it.
There is some new soy meat products out there, but they come ina shrink wrapped block form. They look fancy...but I'm not a fan. I still eat real beef and chicken.
EJS: That is the "meat" stuff I am talking about... YUCKO!! It smells nasty and tastes just the same.
Oh man. I will definitely skip it then. I usually don't dig substitute meat....i like veggie burger patties, but they aren't meat to me! oh and those chicken buffalo nuggets. But again, I don't see them as a straight across substitute.
