I would have to say the worst thing I've seen at a reception would have been 6 yrs ago. I went to a wedding with FH and his mom. It was the mom's friend son who got married. At the reception while the bride and groom were dancing SOMEONE went over and CUT the wedding cake. I REPEAT SOMEONE ELSE CUT THE CAKE while the couple had their first dance. Once the cake had been cut others started to go over and cut the cake also. Needless to say the couple wasn't happy and they lost that perfect picture where they cut the cake and feed each other. That moment was stolen from them. What's the worst thing you seen?
actually for me it is cake-smashing. i know some people like it and see it as tradition, but i hate it and cringe every time i see it.
also, i was at a wedding where the best man took the toast so far over the line (in terms of insulting the bride and groom to be funny) it was embarrassing to witness.
this one im guilty of bad behaviour... everyone at our table were taking bets on how long the marriage would last. the bride wanted a wedding and not a marriage according to most of us (well the women while the men just didnt like the bride) and none of us were surprised when they split up within a year.
Wow, who cuts a wedding cake that isn't their own?!?! That's awful. My dad used to cut a piece of my birthday cake out before the parties because he couldn't resist it. I think every picture I have of me blowing out the candles includes a cake with a chunk missing
I haven't witnessed this in person, but my boss told me that when she got married about 15 years ago, her new husband's brother and his girlfriend had sex on the lawn at the reception and everybody saw them with their butts in the air....nice wedding, eh? LoL
I haven't personally seen anything awful, though!
Wow...cutting the cake?? That is EVIL!
And I'm totally with djmaddiebluedog, because I cringe everytime I see a cake smash too!
The worst I've seen (and it's not too bad really) was the brides ex-bf came to the reception to declare his love for her. Um...it's the reception? You're kinda late bub. She just kind of gave him that pity look and he left.
ejs4y8 Your dad sounds just like mine! We always have to be extra careful to hide cakes from him so he doesn't dig in.
The WORST thing I witnessed was probably the wedding where the bride did not smile once the ENTIRE day. No joke. It was miserable.
what i witnessed at a friend's wedding:
bouquet toss: 4 year old caught it
garter toss: drunken 18 year old caught it
the dj made him put the garter on the kid..it was really bizarre and weird.
also lots of people wearing jeans and sweatpants to the wedding.. :O
another friend's wedding: drunken marine (who was a friend of the groom) got in a fight at the bar with some of the bride's family members, fist throwing and all..he was thrown out.
I was at a wedding a few years ago where the bride's brother had too much to drink and got in a fight with bride's ex-boyfriend over the new girlfriend he brought to the wedding. The bride was in tears and the brother had to be taken to the ER for a few stitches. Needless to say, the reception wrapped up shortly thereafter. What a nightmare!
@ futuremrsbrown: I actually went to a reception where a little boy like 6 or so caught the garter and a 30 something lady caught the bouquet and the little boy was VERY EXCITED to put the garter on the woman's leg. I clearly forgot about that. That was weird also. I will be sure to keep all kids off the floor during this time at my wedding (lol)
Omg, that's a horrible story. I would have kicked those people out, if that was my wedding! How extremely rude!
Worst thing I ever saw was when NO ONE clapped or cheered for the bride and groom after the choreographed dance that they prepared for their guests. So sad!
PS: futuremrsbrown - that is a funny but also horrible story, creepy to imagine an 18 year old putting a garter on a 4 year old, lol.
This STILL makes me cringe...at my cousin's wedding years ago....a close friend of my uncle wore a kilt. He's Scottish so okay nobody thought anything of it...although he DOES like attention...ahem. A few hours into the reception we were all on the dance floor (at a very fancy hotel) and he pulled up the kilt and had a....ugh how do I put this...large fake "thingy" that he "flashed" everyone with.
If it was my wedding (NO, he's NOT invited) I would've had him "removed"...my cousin and his wife laughed....my mum & I were horrified.
Oh my gosh! Kilt flasher, garters on 4-year-olds, cake cutters...it's like a Beware list for your wedding! I was at a reception where an unruly preschooler took a flying lunge at the cake...thank goodness he was caught in the nick of time, otherwise I think having a three year old in the middle of your smashed cake on the floor would definitely qualify...
garter toss: drunken 18 year old caught it
the dj made him put the garter on the kid..it was really bizarre and weird.

NO!!! That is disgusting. Seriously. That is just not right. Yuck!
At my cousin's wedding, an elderly guest choked on her food. She also had a heart condition, apparently, and lost consciousness. Some thought it was a heart attack...whatever it was, she wasn't breathing and it was very scary. Luckily, a doctor, nurse, and EMT were also guests...they did CPR on the poor woman, and then the ambulance came, and the stretchers and all. Definitely sombered things up & definitely a "worst case scenario." Can you imagine? No one really felt like dancing and boozing after that.
The guest turned out to be ok, luckily.
The worst I've witnessed was sadly, at my brother's wedding. A female guest of my sister-in-law decided to toast the new couple by saying how she wished my sister-in-law had married her brother instead of her new husband (my brother). Throughout her ramblings it became evident that she has had a crush on my sister-in-law for years. It was very awkward.
There had a been a bat problem that year. Outside the venue there had to be over a HUNDRED of DEAD bats. I was a flower girl in the wedding. Their marriage didn't last very long though.
Hmm, I'd have to say it was at a close family friend's wedding (he was the groom). The bride's brother was one of the groomsmen. Anyway, they had to delay the ceremony by at least 30 minutes while the groom walked his soon-to-be-BIL around the block of the church a few times... because he was drunk. Before the CEREMONY. I was so embarrassed for him!
I went to a wedding where the groom's mother had too much to drink and came to our table asking us if we were the caterers when clearly we were not dressed in any way like caterers. I could tell she had too much to drink, but I was completely insulted by what she had said. Needless to say, we left a bit early.
Yet it didn't help that the reception was done on a person's driveway where it was so cold that the person next to me had lips that turned blue despite the heat lamp she sat next to. I'm not sure if it rained, but it was cold and windy. That's all I'll ever remember about her wedding.
In a friend's wedding that was taking place outside, we waited for over an hour for the bride to show up. Everything was in place, the groom, the officiant, the musicians, but no bride. It was very warm, people started whispering... She finally showed up, no explanation, with a somber expression and went on with it like nothing happened.
The marriage lasted less than 6 months - it turned out she was having second thoughts on that day due to an affair she was having... with one of her future sister-in-law's co-workers!
I'm absolutely dumfounded that anyone would go and actually cut the cake before the Bride and Groom cut it first! I'm even more shocked that guests then proceeded to partake! Clearly these guests have never BEEN to weddings before! I can't say that I've witnessed anything so horrendous, but I will say that if my FH smashes cake in my face we'll be headed straight for an anullment~! lol
I have witnessed some realllly bad toasts. From the best man and maid of honor! Lots of them were inappropriate, and some were just super boring and seemed to last forever!
Im even ashamed to say it was my aunts wedding
(if thats what you want to call it). Well any way my aunt got married 2-3 yrs ago and she did the back yard bbq reception. Nothing worng with that with the exception that people were dresses in jeans and racing t-shirts some even in filthy work clothes!! they had a decorated arch which they stood by as the minister was doing their ceremony all the guys were smoking, cussing and yelling like it was a sporting event. Horrible, i couldn't even imagine doing anything like that but the back yard bbq's are the way may family seems to go. So needless to say when i went to book my venue for our reception the cook is a good friend of the family. He asked me what i wanted and i said not a (blanks wedding, my aunt) and he said oh you dont want them their standing in their racing t-shirts drinking till they fall over. I laughed because he was not even present for the wedding but he knew it was a disaster. Oh and her cake all the ppl threw it around at each other and not even a 1/4 of it go eaten.Boy will they be surprised at my formal wedding. They wont know what to do sitting around tables with real linen, good food and no racing on tv..lol
oh wow, that's funny with the guest eating the cake first, wow!
hmm they should ban kids from the garter and bouquet tossing, feels a little sick if they catch it
so funny, with the dad eating a slice out his kids cake, that's so cute, a grown man who can't resist cake
BOREDOM and Lack of Planning! Waiting 2 hours at the reception hall for the bride and groom to even arrive....starving guests!!! Just tell us when it starts and we will show up, but don't tell us "immediately following" if "immediately" means 2 hours after the ceremony ends!
I witnessed a "Best Woman" reasurring everyone they had never hooked up. I don't care that she is married now with kids, It was very suspect for her to toast to her best guy friend and joke that they had never hooked up!
Oh, and I was at vietnamese wedding and over heard someone say "just to think, 30 years ago, I was shooting at these people". I wanted to throw up and be moved to another table.
I wasnt there but my best friend went to a wedding 2 weeks ago and when it was time for the bride to throw the bouquet everyone got in line. She threw it and an older woman went to catch it and to be funny the brides sister bumped her with her hip so she could catch it. Turns out the other woman fell after this 'hip check', broke her eye socket, needed stitches in her mouth, and was carried out on a stretcher!
I actually pictured my (rotten) nephews and neice sticking their dirty gross fingers in my cake. I told FI that if ANYONE touches OUR cake before WE do (love the all caps, no?
) I will have them removed, and then I'll cry! LOL
I didn't witness this but at my cousin's wedding his Dad (my Uncle) got WASTED and was in an accident on the way home (totaled his car). Luckily he was ok, and learned from it and doesn't drink anymore!
I'm TERRIFIED that some of these things will happen at my wedding - I'll break down in tears like the little girl in Problem Child at her birthday party when the naughty boy throws all her gifts in the pool! :D
I was just in a wedding in december. The bride's dress was cream. The MOB's suit was ALSO cream.
Weird.
The worst though is an experience that my mom told me. She went to a wedding of one of our cousins years ago. The FOB got incredibly drunk at the reception, and knocked over the cake entire table with the cake on it!
No wedding cake there. :-(
The worst thing I've witnessed was at my fi's cousins wedding. Her father is absent from her life so she had her oldest uncle make a speech. Well, he wasn't drunk BUT he ranted for 20 minutes about a local environmentalist....just RANTED...vented even..and people actually walked out b/c it was getting so ridiculous. And the worst part of all - no one at the wedding had any relation or liking for this environmental activist......the uncle just wanted to rant. It was an akward speech and the bride and groom had expressions on their faces like "omg..is this really happening?"
I have two storys:
My Mom told me that when her and my Dad got married, My Mom went ouside to get some fresh air with some other guests and saw the bestman and My Dad's sister having sex on a picknick table!! Needless to say, they didn't spend much time getting some air!
I was at a wedding years ago at a hotel out of town. I was sharing a room with a friend of mine, since we both went to the wedding solo. She got really drunk and went back to the room early. When I went to the room after the reception there was puke all over!!! Not kidding!! It was on both beds and all over the floor and around the toilet! She was in the process of trying to clean it but still YUK! The smell was so bad I had to knock on doors to find someone who would let me share their room.... that was a fun wedding aside from that.
I would say fighting. At a family members wedding 10+years ago, the bride and her sisters got drunk and into a fight and the bride got beer spilled all over her dress. At a wedding my parents went to, the cops had to come break up a fight.
I was a BM in my friend's wedding. Me & another BM went to the honeymoon suite to romance it with rose petals, etc. When we walked in, the groom's sister (also a BM) was inside, on the bed- doing the nasty with her boyfriend.
OMG it was so
and extremely rude to the new couple. Needless to say, we waited for them outside, then tried to straighten up the room. We never told the bride because we didn't want to start drama.
I'm an encore bride. At my first wedding, when we walked into the reception hall (right next door to the church we got married at) everyone had already started to eat. None of the hot food was left, like roast beef, meatballs, etc. We ate cold sandwiches and chips. Most of the good desserts were gone as well. I just thought it was really rude. Also none of the bridal party sat at the table with us (it was a long table) and we sat by ourselves eating. It seemed like everyone was just there for the food. No one watched us cut the cake either except the lady who made our cake and the photographer.
Also that is just AWFUL and SICK about the 18 yr old putting a garter on a 4 yr old. I am so glad FH and I are not having a bouquet/garter toss.
Worst thing I've seen?? A wedding I went to last summer... a VERY drunk bride with no panties on.. and the groom fetching the garter, flashing her crotch to all of their guests. Her parents were so embarassed and her grandma cried:(
A very good friend of mine probably had the worst reception ever. I did not make it the wedding but have heard all about it since. First, her three-year-old nephew fell off of a balcony and was caught in the nick of time by a guest that was paying attention. Cops and emergency personnel had to come to the scene. Everyone was okay, but it's hard to have a good time after that! This is why I am not having children at our wedding.
This is a story from my parents . . .
My dad's brother and his wife had their reception at a bowling alley. The bowling alley sign said "congrats X and Y" and then underneath it had the information for the nighly bowling league.
At the reception, the bride's estranged family members showed up drunk and started a fight with my dad's family - including my grandfather, who was in there throwing punches apparently. My parents hightailed it out of there at that point, but they later found out that the cops had to come and break it up!
