I don't really have a craving for pickles, though I have once or twice, nor do I really eat them more. Then again, I've always loved pickles. I would be the one hoping that someone wouldn't want the pickle that came with their sandwich platter so that I could have it. However, I do tend to eat the pickles that my husband takes off his burgers, but not all the time. There have even been times that pickles tasted completely off to me too.
Yes I am definitely eating more pickles but the type that I like has changed. I used to love the Claussens garlicky ones but now I only like the Vlasic baby dills.
I'm not sure what it is tho. Something in the vinegar I think. I had heard that vinegar was supposed to help with heartburn but they don't seem to do that for me.
I think I heard somewhere that it has to do with needing more sodium?? I loooove pickles!
My baby book says that pickles are a good source of sodium, and lots of pregnant women crave salty snacks. Personally, I have never been a fan of pickles, but I now eat like a bag of corn chips a week!
I really like pickles, but when pregnant, I LOVE them, especially the little baby dill ones. I think my mom said it was something about the vinegar doing something to the calcium. I really like pickle and peanut butter sandwiches (and bacon and peanut butter!). I also love pepperoncinis and banana peppers on everything. Obviously, I haven't gotten to the craving thing this time around yet.
I'm not pregnant, but this post totally made me crave pickles - just because I love them. I had to go eat one a few minutes ago. :-)
@Miss Starlet - pickles and PB sandwich... That is definitely interesting! A pregnancy craving or a non-pregnancy craving? :)
I just ate some pickles...yum! I love anything salty, like pickles, mustard, pepperoncinis, banana peppers, anchovies (yep, love em!), and capers. Caper chicken is a fave right now! But I've always liked that kind of stuff, it just got amped up since I got pregnant.
I'm not pregnant but I looooove pickles. When I buy them, I usually end up finishing the jar within a week. So yummy! In regards to the pickles and peanut butter, it's not a pregnancy thing. my mom loves it that way!
@Roddy...totally non-pregnant! It started when I was in jr high and there was a vintage themed restaurant in San Diego we used to go to called Corvette Diner and they had burgers named after all the original musketeers. The burger called the Rory had peanut butter on it, and being the huge peanut butter freak that I am, I had to try it and I love, love, loved it!! There's something about the smooth, sweet, nutty flavor and texture of the peanut butter and the sharpness of the pickle!!
@Miss Starlet - Nice! I may have to try it. I know I was a little skeptical about a banana and PB sandwich but I LOVE them.
Oh man, I want a pickle now, and I’m not even pregnant! :)
When I was in high school I worked at a pizza place, and there was a pregnant woman who came in and ordered a small pickle pizza a few times a week. Just red sauce, cheese and pickles! We all made a pickle pizza one night to try it, and actually, it was really good. The cheese and pickles were a great combo.
Peanut butter and banana sandwiches! So good! My brother, who is also obsessed with peanut butter, makes grilled peanut butter, marshmallow creme and banana sandwiches. Ridiculous good!!
I made the mistake of reading the pickle jar and seeing 'HFCS'. Maybe I can find someone that makes them homemade :) Cause they are tasty!
My theory is that 'salt' is the craving and 'pickles' comes to mind.
For me it is dairy. I've never been one to drink milk everyday, or even by the glass as an adult unless it's with chocolate cake. But now. I LOVE IT. I pour a glass and guzzle it down. I have to have Cheerios w/ Milk first thing in the AM. At night I'm craving Ice Cream (which is something we rarely have in the house). It's the 'DAIRY' driving the craving - weather it's Ice Cream, Milk, Cottage Cheese, Yogurt etc. I don't care I just WANT IT.
I have a question for your pregnant ladies on the same realm.
Are you getting turned off by certain food that you loved before pregnancy?
I fear that!!! Hehe.
@Gerbera...with my first daughter, it was greek food. I ate at this little greek place a couple times a week, and one day, I walked in and istantly felt sick. Spanakopita and hummus are two of my favorite things. I don't even know what specifically it was, but it put me off of spinach and chickpeas for a few years. Also, cream cheese and yogurt turned my stomach. I also craved things that I wouldn't normally eat, like frozen waffles topped with peanut butter, syrup and whipped cream and microwave burritos.
With my second daughter, it was Chinese food and anything breaded and fried that turned my stomach. I still can't stomach fortune cookies.
I think it's the vingegariness (Is that even a word? It is now.). I know when my mom was pregnant with me, she was craving straight up vinegar. Now I love anything with vinegar in it--I already love pickles, they're my PMS food. =)
I was watching one of those local food featuring shows on TV and one ice cream maker said once a pregnant woman requested pickle-flavored ice cream!
@Gerbera - I can't think of anything right now that I don't have interest in that I used to like but I can tell you that I am a huge carnivore. I just love meat BUT I find that if I am making the meat for dinner, I won't eat it. I just don't want it. It smells good and all but I end up eating cereal instead.
Is this happening with anyone else? An aversion to the food you cook.
The pickle is a mystery but I can tell you that I am not pregnant and I can eat 1/2 a jar of pickles a night! My luck when I do eventually get pregnant I won't want pickles. lol
I'm not pregnant but I was curious to see if anyone had the answer. I had a friend who ate pickles and ice cream together when she was pregnant. It was gross but I didn't knock her because I may find myself wanting the same snack when I am pregnant. I assume its the sodium too. And since I love pickles already, this could be a problemo.
@Jennifer - I caught (yes, caught) my sister when she was preggie with her first in a corner eating the large pickle with birthday cake. She was hiding so noone saw her. I felt bad she had to do that but I was thinking she was insane, lol!
I do not like pickles and they have not been any more appealing since I was pregnant, but I ate almost two whole bags of salt and vinegar potato chips a couple of weeks ago, so I definitely think it is the salt that we are craving.
The aversion thing is happening to me with meat, too, specifically steak. I can make it but it doesn't look good and I have not wanted a steak in 4 months. I went through a phase with most meat, but steak is the big no-go for me. I also love to cook, and had absolutely no desire to cook anything. I was craving things I would have previously made and couldn't bring myself to cook them, it was driving me nuts.
I'm not pregnant nor TTC for a few years, but I absolutely love pickles, banana pepper rings, pickled jalapeno's etc. My sister is too :)
I have never liked pickles and that hasn't changed! I do like salt and vinegar chips, but they cut up my mouth so I can't even eat them very much (pregnant or not).
I haven't really had any pregnancy cravings, but I do enjoy a hagan daaz ice cream bar now and then!
lol I love pickles! I didn't crave them pregnant though. I LOVEEDDDD Ice cream that's all I ate during my pregnancy...lots of sweets. Oh and cheeseburgers. My daughter is gunna love cheeseburgers when she can have them!
Yum...cheeseburgers. What's weird is I have started carving my husband's cravings. He loves Whopper Jr's and I demolished two in like 10 minutes, and that is only the beginning. This baby will love Burker King.
------ sorry this is incredibly stupid but--------
i thought it was so funny to check out the boards and see these two threads right next to one another!! HA!

----- ok, back to your regular "pickle posting"----------------
Havent craved pickles yet, i have mostly craved ice cream shakes. Everytime I pass by In n Out or McDonalds I have to have one. I now can't stand the smell of coffee and I used to drink 3 or 4 cups a day. This is good though because I really though I would miss my coffee.
@krissybee - I saw that too, lol.
@lilperiwinkle - all I have been wanting are sweets. I gave up soda for lent so my body is going nuts looking for the next sweet fix. Sadly, I have been a little fast food junkie too. I told the hubs I will be cutting back dramatically with the FF until the baby is born. Wish me luck! :)

As I am waiting for 4pm to roll around, I was wondering what is up with preggie women and pickles? Why is it that so many preggie women either crave pickles or eat more of them during their pregnancy.
I do not have a craving for pickles, yet, but I have eaten them more since I have been pregnant than EVER before. I was the girl who wouldn't eat that pickle that was always given as part of a sandwich platter. It was usually given to someone else to eat or unfortunately thrown away. Now, I make sure I eat it.
Any one have a clue about this? And do you crave pickles or eat them more nwo that you're preggie?
