Amen! We're all brides and grooms. Why does it matter who we marry?? It bugs me that my cousin has yet to be invited to a family wedding with her partner
. That damn well is gonna change with me.
@Scottielass: I'm lucky in that my family would never ostracize my wife. In fact, my brother's comment on Proposition 8 was that he was upset not only that it passed, but that it was up for a vote at all. As he put it, "No one got to vote on whether I could marry my wife; why should they be allowed to vote on whether you could marry yours?"
I was like...nothing...ha ha Then I watched the video. It's so true!
That's awesome, thanks for sharing!
I have been shocked (in a good way) with the reaction my 12 year old (almost 13) son has gotten from friends, teachers, etc.., when he mentions our upcoming wedding. He's gotten lots of "tell your moms congratulations!" from teachers and such, and the same from his friends... some have even messaged me on facebook to congratulate me directly! He's funny. Every year they have to do this interview of one new person to break the ice and he always opens up with "I have 2 moms, 3 cats, 2 dogs, an older brother, a younger sister, and yes, I have a father too. Any questions?"
;)
@MsInterpret:Awww! How great for him to embrace it like that and I am so proud of the community that is supporting you and him.
From working on my guest list yesterday... I LOVED this even more :)
@MsInterpret: One of my favorite kid stories was the time a classmate told my daughter (then in about third grade) that gay people were bad. She responded, "That's impossible. My mother's secretary is gay, and he taught me how to copy comics using silly putty." Apparently, both of them found this logic impeccable. And that was while I was still married to a man.
@2dBride: Oh that's adorable! I remember doing that, too.... I wonder how many 'kids today' will never know that joy, since all of their media is through the internet!?
When my son (same one) was a bit younger... around 4th grade if I remember correctly... they did a school play where the students created everything, wrote it, directed it, etc. The plot evolved around the idea that the adults had all been kidnapped by aliens and the children were left in charge and had to organize, survive, create laws, etc. One of the first "laws" my son suggested they enact in the new adult-free world was that anyone could marry anyone they loved, regardless of gender. :) And the awesome school he was in at the time totally embraced it and ran with it, and all the kids were 100% okay with it as part of the play. It was a great experience for him.
He's a bit of a smart-azz too though.. when he hears a kid using "gay" in a negative slang way (as in "that is SO GAY"), he will comment with something every time.. so if they say that an object is "so gay" he will say "Oh really? I had no idea that inanimate objects had a sexual orientation. Interesting!" ;)
@MsInterpret: haha that's AWESOME!
i too, love that commercial! I mean seriously, if straight people are allowed to be happy AND or miserable, why can't everyone else be just as much?! :D
Gosh, this reminds me of a crazy conversation I overheard once. One of the teachers at the day care I worked at was making snarky comments about a mom who was in to talk to the director about why her daughter came home saying that "her moms weren't really married because a kid in my class told me women couldn't marry." She kept talking about how "it just wasn't right."
The teacher then starts asking the other teacher, who got pregnant on date #2 with a guy, if she was going to let him have parental rights when he gets out of jail.
To me, the second one would be the one that would land it in the "just not right" column.

I just thought the brides (and grooms) here might like to see the real explanation of what is wrong with gay marriage, in a form they can relate to:
