Do you measure your BMI? If not you can calculate it here.
In general (not true in all cases, especially for really muscular athletes)
At 5'10" and 169 lbs I'm at 24.2. Whew, I JUST made healthy! I usually try to stay 5 lbs lighter than I am right now but I've been bummed out and avoiding the gym (bad girl!). Wow, I just checked it out and I could be as small at 125 lbs and still be considered healthy...don't think I've seen that weight since maybe sixth grade?
I voted but it didn't count my vote and now I can't vote again =(
Mine is over 30.. well over. I know I am obese and don't need numbers telling me so. :P
Well, it keeps yelling at me for typing in 5'0" in the height section (I guess I have no height!) so I went down to 4'11" and it gave me 21.7.
I really don't trust BMI, though. It's kind of a shot in the dark compared to fat measurements, scans, etc.
Boo, sorry! I messed up the poll and it wouldn't fix itself with editing so I had to delete and re-create it.
Even though my BMI is 19.3, and thus on the smaller side, I don't like using BMI to judge my healthiness because I know I am out of shape and flabby right now :/ A month ago I was so toned but then I got sick and the new semester started and my eating habits/exercise cycle got thrown off. It was supposed to start again today but I've been running a fever all day!!
Funny side note: I'm 5'0, but the website won't let you enter "0" for inches so I have to put 4'12. Way to make me feel even shorter haha :p
I definetly agree that BMI is so far from a perfect tool. It' really only works for people of "average" body composition. I also always found it a little weird that it doesn't take gender into account since males have a bigger muscle mass than females.
But now that I think about it, healthy body fat ranges for males and females litterally don't even overlap so maybe it all evens out in the end.
@cbgg: there are more advanced BMI calculators out there on the internets that take into account gender, body frame, activity level, etc. I don't know how medically accurate they are but I feel like they are more accurate for me because I have such a small body frame.
It says I'm in a healthy weight range, but I want to lose 30 more lbs. Silly body. :p
Dammit I am just over 30 by 0.2 :(
I knew that thought, because my Wii fit told me. That being said, I have managed to come down from being 33.2 3 months ago which is exciting! I never ever knew I was obsese until I did my BMI, which was kinda depressing. I don't look obsese to look at as I am average height and seemingly average weight.
@scissors - Well at your height it's going to give you a HUGE range for healthy! I'm several inches shorter than you and my healthy pound range is a 40 lb spread. But good for you, you've been losing a lot of weight, right?
*also i feel like I should mention that the Body Mass Index is meant to indicate whether you fall into a healthy weight range. Not whether you're healthy. It's certainly not an indicator of fitness, body composition, or other components of health.
@thatelisagirl - I agree that the BMI is a bit harsh with the word obese! I know a lot of people who technically fall into that category who certainly don't look obese to me.
obese is a medical term for someone who is above their suggested body weight range. unfortunately because of the media obese tends to be perceived as someone who is insanely overweight :/
im on the borderline of healthy and overweight. boo! I excercise heaps too!
Well that's semi upsetting, I was feeling pretty good about myself. *sad face*
I'm 4' 11'' and about 53kgs... I have a BMI of 23.43 which is normal but I really would like to lose about 8 - 10 kgs to feel healthier. Additionally, since I ride a bike, I want to work on strength and stamina as my arms tend to get really sore.
It told me my BMI is 18.01.
And I know that I'm naturally thin, but I honestly would never categorize myself as underweight. In fact, I'm pretty out of shape and unhealthy right now. I've never had any health problems related to weight or being "too thin".
Don't most doctors tell you now that BMI is actually a pretty inaccurate way to define your overall body health? Muscle weighs more than fat. My BMI sticks around the 23/24 range but when I work out for a long amount of time it rises up to the 24/25 range.
24.38
But my doctor has told me I need to lose weight, and ideally I'd like to be about 15-20 pounds lighter.
I'm 5' 7.5" and weigh 158 today.
19.13. I have no idea what that number means, haha.
Wow, and that number changes pretty fast. I typed in 5'5" and 115 lbs since that's my average, but when I put in my actual weight, it dropped my BMI to 18.8. Just baaaaarely healthy weight. That's what I get for not having time to eat lunch. Bah.
5'11", 170 pounds, BMI: 23.7
My "happy weight" is 165, or a 30" waist. Which means my dress pants fit. Which they do not right now =]
I actually prefer to go by measurements. I'm a DD, which means I carry a lot of "fat" up top and my measurements can get skewed by lots of those electrical impulse machines. Sometimes I show up as "mobidly obese" which just isn't true. So i prefer to take waist, hip, and 3" below belly button circumference measurements and go off those since that's where the weight packs on.
@cbgg, I could NEVER weigh 125. I got a fancy body fat test once and I have 25 pounds of actual fat on my body (they weighed my bones, my muscles, then did some fancy math). It's a completely infeasible number for me with my frame and structure. I take a LOT of solace in that! lol.
Mine is 20.7, but I still like being about 5 lbs lighter. I don't put much into the BMI, though, because it will always say my husband is obese, but he is 100% healthy. He is average height, but stocky and very broad. His build would never allow him to be less than about 215 lbs, and he could never be less than a 36 waist. Unless he was anorexic, and even then, it would be pretty tough. So, just for that reason, I think the BMI is bunk for a lot of people.
I'm on the high end of healthy. I am currently trying to lose 10 lbs which would put me in a better spot :) I'm not sure how I feel about BMI as an accurate indicator of health though.
@ccranetobe: I hover at that line too, depending on how my workout goes and what my diet is like that day. But I get on that dreaded treadmill and sweat myself into a hot mess five days a week! Booooo!
i'm almost 5'8" and my weight ranges from 118-125, so my BMI ranges from 18.5-19+
I'm listed as obese. I have never been in the healthy range (too short and in the past too muscular)... I go with the body fat scan which says I definitely need to work out.
Too much! I'd like it to be 20. Why, I have no clue, but it's only five lbs.
BMI is 20.3 - 5'5 weigh 123
This is almost the healthiest I have ever been....hopefully I'll be back to that point by my wedding!
BMI totally makes me nervous...because it tells me I'm underweight, but I really don't think you'd say that if you saw me in person...hmmmm
I don't trust BMI, especially as an athlete. Muscle mass makes a big difference. When I use that calculator, it tells me I'm overweight. But when the trainers use caliphers (those weird pinchy things), they measure just below average. Oh well. I don't generally use a scale to tell me if I'm happy with my body, but I think BMI can be a really helpful tool to some people :)
im obese i know i am... i have big but and big boobs... but my FI is very happy!!!
i will love to get to the healthy bmi but i dont think that will work
i have never had a dr not scold me for mine. lol, in high school, we did the BMI test and got a print our of all our stats and my said, " may be too lean" i felt like a grade of steak!
im a whopping 10.5 at 5'7''. im not extrodinarily skinny (i wear a 4, but my hips will NEVER fit into a 2 or smaller), but im a ballet dancer so that may have something to do with it. in high schoold my BMI was under 8! i was a super scrawny kid!
It told me I'm at 23.17. My goal is to get down to like the 21-21.5 range.
Just an observation...what a perfect bell curve of results! Kind of interesting; probably means our ranges of BMIs is pretty average.
Ditto @lillybug - BMI is biased against muscle mass - so if you're short and stocky it could register as unhealthy when it really is not. It's not at all perfect, but it works as a quick reference for a majority of people.
My BMI always says that I'm underweight, but I'm most definitely not.
Just remember not to take the BMI too seriously. The system has its flaws. The only reason it is so widely used is because of its convenience (who has time to be dunked in a massive tank of water or have skinfolds measured on 6 different areas of their body).
I just calculated it... 26.6! Aghh even more motivation to lose weight!
My BMI is less than 18.5. I'm only 5 ft though and very petite frame so I'm really not underwieght.
