I know there's a lot of people who prefer wine or no alcohol but I was wondering if there were any good beer drinking ladies out there.
While I do enjoy a glass of wine my husband is Belgian and has gotten me more into tasty beers lately. My favorite beer is Rochefort made by Trappist monks in Belgium, it's absolutely delicious. My other favorite is Guinness with a bit of Framboise in it to give it a hint of a rasberry flavor.
How about everyone else?
I love beer! It's a staple around here, we don't drink it every night but we always have it on hand. I usually drink Heineken Lights, and when I'm having a splurge moment, I'll get Coronas. R likes to try new things all the time, so he'll get whatever new local beer is on display at Whole Foods.
THIS is my kind of post! I'm not a snob about it but I LOVE good beer. Nothing better than an IPA in my opinion... I like my beers strong but not dark, definitely more hoppy than wheaty. I like a few IPA's as my fave... the Upland Brewery Dragonfly IPA, and Boulder Beer's Mojo IPA as well... and it's not TOTALLY an IPA but Three Floyd's Gumballhead. YUM! I wish we could afford to have great beer at the reception :(
I love Amber Bock. Fat Tire is my favorite, but they don't sell it here.
Newcastle. mmm....
or Guiness.
I drink darker beer than my boy. it's kind of ... embarrasing for him.
My husband loves IPAs so I will have to keep a lookout for those, he's always looking to try something new.
I love beer as well. Here are a few I enjoy:
1. Blue Moon
2. Leinenkugal's Sunset Wheat
3. Pyramid Apricot Ale
4. Sam Adam's Summer Ale
My favorite is Rogue Juniper Pale Ale which you can't get here really unless you go to a specialty store. It's bomb, though.
@Jelly Bean (ps my first and middle name rhyme with Jelly Bean... I hate easter!) We JUST got Fat Tire here in Indianapolis! It's a good drinkable beer, full flavored, we got the FMIL into it so she always has it at her house which is great :) Although she usually calls it "FLAT tire"... nice.
@bvig I probably like them a little hoppier than FI but what we found is that with IPAs, the more local/random, the BETTER! I have yet to find a real "mainstream" beer that has any great IPA qualities. I like to avoid national brands like that when possible just to try what is out there... and try to support local breweries (like, Upland's Dragonfly is brewed in Bloomington, IN, where FI went to college!)
@kjpugs - ohhh that's probably why we haven't heard of them. I love the microbreweries too and just trying things out. Though part of the reason I posted this was we went to a pub last night where they always change their taps so you can try a lot of random things and I struck out twice with what I ordered whereas my DH got two delicious beers.
@Kittyachi - both DH and I love Rogue but it's so hit and miss around here on whether stores have it - I never even knew they had a pale ale.
Ohhh, great post! I'm not a beer snob by any means, but I LOVE a good beer. I prefer wheat beers, especially german or belgian beers.
There's a brewery in Cooperstown, NY, called Ommegang, which makes phenomenal beglian style beers. I love their Witte and Rare Vos.
My favorites that you can find most places are:
Sam Adams Boston Ale (harder to find, you typically see the Lager but not the Ale); Sam Adams seasonal brews; Blue Moon; Magic Hat... There are many. I don't drink often, but some nights there is nothing better than a cold beer.
Right now - Magic Hat Lucky Kat IPA -- and the bottle is pink ;o)
But in the summer, I love some Brooklyn Summer Ale.
Bell's Oberon is the best summer beer (as most Midwest/Michigan girls will agree)! We are planning on having a Keg of Oberon either at the wedding or at the after party! Can't wait!
@di5308 - Ommegang was one of the beers my hub had last night and really liked.
@thefuturemrsjewell - Love Bell's. I don't think we've tried the Oberon but the two hearted ale is super.
My friends are major beer lovers, it's great because when we go out we try a million by sharing!
I love wheat beers. My fave beers are mostly made by the Mill Street Brewery in Toronto (love the organic, I had a Belgian Wit Beer that was peach flavoured it was great, my friends and I all loved the Milk Stout which the waiter said was gross ha ha). I also love Young's Double Chocolate Stout.
Once at a pub called C'est What in Toronto I had a beer float! It was a scoop of ice cream in chocolate hazulnut stout with whipped cream and chocolate syrup on top. It was honestly delicious, it tasted sort of like a chocolately iced cap!
LOL I have a funny beer story for all of you.
FI and I got invited by some heavily partying friends (well, that defines most of our friends, but anyway) to participate in a case race. Which means you and a partner try to finish a case (24 cans) first. It was a case race for couples, $20 buy in. So I am ALL IN this, and decided I would win because we'd have almost $200 for our wedding from it!
We fight on... we win. I drank 11.5, he drank 12.5. I will never drink Miller Lite again. I ended up puking and going home (some fun, right) and wake up the next morning and ask FI how much $$ we won. His response?
"$30. And we spent it on pizza for you."
YEP they changed it to $5 buy in last minute and no one told me. BOOOOOOO! Oh what a beer-loving, competitive, wedding obsessed girl will do.
I'm a pretty "mainstream" beer drinker, so excuse me if this reeks of "I don't drink cool beer," but I love Shiner Bock. I grew up 10 minutes away from Shiner, TX, but now I live in PA so it's like impossible to find. Every time I visit home, I drink it.
@kjpugs - I emailed them about it, and they are expanding slowly. I've asked that they let me know when it gets here. But it looks like it might be awhile. I like things that taste interesting.
@Sage LOL Shiner Bock is a cool beer! Sorry if I came off like that- IPA's are just tough to get mainstream. My fave mainstream beer is probably Sam Adams... love their Winter Ale.
@Jelly Bean25 before we got it on this side of the Mississippi FI would stock up when he visited friends in Chicago or St Louis. What's the closest to you that has it?
Leinenkugal's Summer Shandy, well in the summer time and thenLeinenkugal's Honey Weisse. Any other time.
YUMMY, i wanna leave work now. :-) Great post. On the other hand My fiance LOVES any new beer to try. For a valentines gift I got him a 3 month membership to the beer of themonth club. Although he still has a lot left, he loves to just keep them in the fridge and try them on random occasions! It's a GREAT gift to the guys who like to try different types of beer from not well known breweries!
Do any of you guys have supermarkets/stores that let you get a 6 pack "sampler" of any of their beers? A Kroger near us does this (but not all of them) and I know Trader Joes does too. I LOVE that option, it's like 6 little surprise parties!
It looks like Georgia is the closest. I don't generally get up to Georgia too often. Hopefully it's almost here.
love this thread! so good to see other beer-girls out there. =) Sam Adams Cherry Wheat is probably my favorite beer ever. I'm also really enjoying the pumpkin ales that are out this time of year. (and of course, anything blue moon.)
A beer usually isn't my first choice for a drink... but I do appreciate a good brew! I think the best beers are local brews. Whenever I'm in a new city I'll ask to try their local beer :)
My favourite beer comes from the Granville Island Brewery in Vancouver, Canada.
I love this thread! I love beer so much. My tastes tend to run towards Belgians and/or nutbrowns; FI's tastes run to the hoppiest IPAs he can find, and/or Belgians. So in the fridge we have a beer shelf, one side his, one side mine. :)
My current favorite beers are a local Belgian-style tripel (Ale Asylum's Tripel Nova, for anyone in WI) and Dogfish Head's Punkin Ale. FI is gaining a lot of steam with his home brewing, so we're actually hoping to have all the beer at the wedding brewed by him!
One of the best wedding presents we got was from one of hubs friends who got us a case of these Belgian and Belgian-style beers in those big glass bottles with the kinda corky top. No two are the same and it's a mix of ones we've had and love and ones we've never tried.
I really like Alexander Keiths but my favorite would have to be Heineken. :)
Paulaner Hefeweizen and Cherry Raspberry Ale from a local brewery in Troy NY, Brown's Brewing.
Dead Guy is my fave! And a second on the Fat Tire. Living in Oregon for some years spoiled me with awesome beers.
I LOVE BEER! My go-to is Newcastle. I also like Anchor Steam, Fat Tire, and anything really dark and stout-y. I will order anything on the menu described as chocolate stout, oatmeal stout, etc.......and my all-time love is the pumpkin ales that are seasonal to this time of year!
Does Framboise count as beer? I say it does and DH says it doesnt! But if it does, that is my only favority beer because I cant stand the taste of regular beer!
I say Framboise is a beer and so does wiki. Have you ever tried it in guinness or a chocolate stout it's delicious even my hub likes it and he doesn't usually like the lambics that much.
@Redeemed Rebekah: ditto on the Keiths. Mmmm!
Has anyone else tried Bud Light Lime? That was definitely my summer beer. It doesn't have a nasty after taste which is perfect if you're drinking for a long period of time. Believe me, the sixth bottle tasted the same as the first.
If I want a dark beer, Guinness is the obvious choice. :) If I want a light beer, I usually go for Sweetwater 420.
