Try Quorn for chicken patties. YUM. I like the Morningstar Black Bean burgers and Grillers Prime. I am also a big fan of the Boca Original Vegan burgers. Hands down the best veggie burger available though is the Lightlife veggie burger (the same company that makes Smart Dogs which are also unreasonably delicious). I can never find them though.
I'm a big fan of the veggie burgers at Houston's. As for one to cook at home, Amy's has a nice line of them, my favorites being the California and the Texas varieties. I find the easiest way to spice up a veggie burger is to "Grill" it in a frying pan with cooking spray. It's 1000x better than nuking it in the microwave.
Ew, people microwave them?! Ha. Never...i always grill 'em up with Pam, too. I'm so excited to try some of these new brands. The ones I buy taste so cheap and unexciting. Not to mention they're all kinda pricey.
Oh, you should also try the Morningstar Farms mini corn dogs and buffalo wings! They are SO GOOD.
I'm not that big into the meat subsitutes, but FI likes them and if it's good enough to keep meat out of the house it's good news for me!
My top for meat-like subs: Morningstar Grillers Prime and Gardenbuger BBQ Riblets. I especially love the riblets!
Otherwise I stick to more veggie-like patties or just eat veg to cut out the processed foods. If you can find the riblets, though, and like BBQ sauce, you should give those a shot.
We eat Morningstar's Griller's Vegan once a week as our "burger fix", I haven't really liked any other store bought veggie burger otherwise. Just tried Houston's veggie burger and it was pretty good. Trader Joe's has great veggie corn dogs! Quorn is great for mushroom based chik'n products and Morningstar chik patties are great!
Yuuuuummmmy. I can't wait to try all this stuff! My FI thinks I'm crazy for eating meat substitutes, but sometimes, it's just a quick fix, low cal, and it tastes fine! I'm wondering if I can trick him at some point....
A friend of mine in Pittsburg bought some fancy meat substitute and made spaghetti out of it. Her husband thought it was like, filet or something! She never told him!!!!!
Couldn't believe all the weight he was losing, lol
I like Morningstar Farms but my favorite is Dr. Praeger's. I think I got them at Whole Foods, they're delicious. I even had Mr H try one & he actually said "OH, that's really good!"....which is a HUGE compliment from him...he's a steak-a-holic!
I was thinking about my answer and wanted to provide another suggestion if you;re looking for something besides just veggie burgers --- my FI loves the Morningstar sausage patties. He calls they SoySages. They're tasty.
We also use the crumbles for tacos, usually I use low-sodium taco seasoning and throw in some onions and mushrooms into the mix.
I'll have to try the Dr. Praeger's!
Have you tried Sunshine Burgers? I love them. You can find them at Whole Foods.
I've had Dr. Praeger's. I actually have some in the fridge! They're very..."veggie", you know? I like 'em, but the peas always fall apart while I'm cooking! No i haven't had Sunshine. I usually go to Trader Joe's b/c it's closer than Whole Foods, but it looks like I just need to make a list (already did!) and rate them one by one. I wish I could remember which I bought last time....they were SO BAD i threw the whole box away. Like unedible nasty cardboard. Morningstar makes a yummy meat crumble i like in my eggs! yum
Mr.D and I are in love with these - http://ashleescooking.blogspot.com/2009/03/vegetarian-chili-burgers.html
We use a tiny can of mixed beans and tiny can of kidney beans instead of one large can of kidney beans. We also omit all the salt (you don't need it) and add another clove of garlic. Making them probably takes are 30-35 minutes? The hardest part is shredding carrots, no lie. Mr.D liked them so much the first time he begged me to make them for lunch the next day. They also freeze well. I eat them without a bun and use lettuce instead. In fact...I think I'm going to go defrost one now..
I just bought some bulgur so I can attempt a lentil /bulger recipe, I'll let you knwo how it goes. It probably won't be as quick to make though.
Morningstar Farms Grillers Prime. Also, their Black Bean burgers are great!
To me, Boca Burgers are just plain nas-ty.
I love the Gardenburger Original patties. They're usually located in the freezer section next to the Boca and Morningstar stuff. I'm pretty sure the Gardenburger Original ones are the kind they use at several restaurants, like Fuddrucker's, Red Robin and TGIFriday's (although I think they took the veggie burger off the menu there).
I totally love the ones at Houston's too - almost enough to attempt them from scratch. Any good recipes?
Come to think of it, I believe we served Gardenburgers at the Ruby Tuesday when I used to work there....those were always pretty good, too! I wonder if they sell them in bulk at Sam's.
Dorsay, those burgers look AWESOME. I made some chicken ones off Guy Fieri's recipe. They're really good as chicken burgers. More high cal than I intended and they fall apart like none other.
This one looked AWESOME on TV. I should probably try it sometime. Guy always has the tastiest stuff!

FYI - Sunshine Burgers are veggie, and not at all a meat type. I don't like fake meats that try to taste like the real stuff!
Being gluten free, I can't have many of them. But I really like Amy's. They are 100% organic, and taste great.
Thank you Ladies for all the great ideas. My FI are trying to eat less meat and eat more organic as well. This will help out a lot.
BTW - I LOVE MorningStar's mini corn dogs and the Boca Chik'n. Absolutely dislike the Boca Flame Broiled patties (Yuck
). It would have been better without the "grill marks"
Lara bee - Sunshine Bugers are gluten free!! That's how I found out about them! They have 4 flavors - I have only tried the SouthWest and the Garden Herb.
THe Hungry Girl cookbook has a good recipe for making your own veggie burgers. As for ones from the store, I love the Morningstar black bean ones!
I just bought the hungry girl cookbook! Can't wait to get it! That being siad, I had two gardenburger patties for breakfast today. YUM! I like them a LOT! Kinda pricey tho....$4.79 for 4 patties? eek
I love the Boca black bean burgers. Mmmmmm. For some reason I just love fake meat products!
I'm a fan of the morningstar ones over Dr. Prager. Trader Joe's also sells a marsala veggie burger that is also pretty tasty.
If you have a Trader Joe's, I LOVE the Marsala Vegy Burgers! Topped with pickles and some Vegenaise on a toasted bun they are darn near heaven!
I love the Texas ones by AMY, well like all the Amy's products but the texas flavored veggie burgers are my favor out the bunch
Bumping this to see if anyone else has good suggestions? My favorite so far is Morningstar Spicy Black Bean.
I'm a Dr. Prager girl. I think they are the best. I especially love the Southwest flavor!
i just ate a morningstar black bean burger for dinner, how ironic! They are by far my favorite. I love the way they taste, but they're so thin! I bought another morningstar kind at the store the other day that are thicker, but I haven't tried one yet.
There's a local burger place in my town that makes their own black bean burgers and they are AWESOME. It really has a lot to do with the other stuff you put on top.
now i'm hungry again!
Out of the kind that you can buy at a grocery store, definitely Morningstar or Boca. I prefer black-bean burgers--so tasty! But my actual favorite veggie burger is a delicious creation made by one of the local restaurants here. I absolutely LOVE it. It has water chestnuts and all sorts of yummy stuff in it.
Morningstar by far, but mostly because I ate Boca burgers right before getting the stomach flu one time so I associate their taste with vomiting. D:
Another meat-alternative (chicken not burgers) that I LOVE is Qorn. Their microprotein "chicken" has almost an exact consistency, texture, and taste of real chicken.
I eat meat now, but I was vegetarian for 6 years.
None, they are all vile to me. Fake-meat weirds me out, and the ingredients are usually horrible; or at the very last have hydrogenated oils and/or soy, which are both things I avoid.
Veggies burgers usually fall under the "food like substance" category, not the "food" category.
If I was going to eat a vegetarian burger, I would only eat one I made myself from scratch.

Like the PP, I think homemade are the best.
But, if I'm purchasing, Morning Star black bean burger

They all kinda taste "eh" to me...so far the Morningstar ones win but not by a drastic landslide. Boca's ok too. I think I've tried them all, *sigh*. I had an excellent one a at a restaurant one time that compelled me to make my own. Welcome to tofu/oatmeal/black bean flop land. Boy it sucked. I like the chicken patties from Morningstar though. They do kinda taste like chicken.
What's your favorite veggie burger? Got a recipe to share?
