What was your first big purchase together, as a newlywed? NOT including things off your registry that is! (like my super sweet tangerine colored stand mixer, teeheehee)

...we're buying a refrigerator, double oven stove, and a range hood for our kitchen! What about you?

We aren't newlyweds yet but a few months ago we bought a couch together! When I moved in with my fiance he had this super uncomfortable, ugly couch and a futon. So we got rid of the nasty couch and we were using the futon until a couple of months ago when we finally got a new couch. Our next big purchase will probably be a new stove.

We also aren't married yet, but this year, in addition to saving up for the wedding itself, we'll be saving up for our first HUGE purchase, a house! ***gasp*** getting an ulcer about it already! We are moving to Virginia in August so I can work on my Ph.D., and we'll be living in an apartment for a year so that we can shop around...my degree will take 5 years, so we figure it is better than paying up to $50,000 in rent for that time...

Hmmm....as a couple after fully integrating finances I think our first BIG purchase was either the couch (microfiber dual recliner three seat couch & love seat) or our car. Then came a new mattress/box set, then the house, then the entertainment system (TV, surround sound, PS3, etc).

And then of course all the wonderful home projects that come along with the house that Lowes so graciously takes ALL of our money!! :) But I am happy to announce in a months time we will have replaced all 12 windows in our home (it's been a 2 year process)!! yay!

But to answer your question, honestly, I don't foresee any big purchases after marriage. We have a lot of the big items already. I really really want one of those super cool stainless steel fridges where the freezer pulls out at the bottom and two doors on top that opens to one big fridge. But that won't open for a WHILE. Or a Viking Stove; but I'm pretty sure that will never ever happen unless we find one on super clearance or one of us wins the lottery. haha.

Sigh, my parents have a 6 burner convection Viking. It's the same one Monica has in Friends. And I LOVE it. I have to settle for a less expensive version. Still better than my 30 year old ghetto stove.

Funny how Lowes is so happy to take all our money.

OMG! So jealous! At least you get to cook on it every now and then!My dream kitchen would the that fridge, Viking Stove with oven. Then another recessed oven on the wall for baking. Sigh.

Sorry, to get off topic. hehe.

Well, they live 5 hours away.....so we're talking like once in awhile. But when I DO go home, they want to take me OUT to eat!

I've already told the hubs I need a kitchen twice our size at our next house.

Well, I guess our first big purchase was my ring. :) I didn't pay for it, but I picked it out!

We've bought cars together, 3 in 6 years in fact. We have bad car luck! We've bought lots of furniture. I don't really consider that a big purchase though. My husband already owned the house we live in, so if and when we buy a new one, I'll consider that a big purchase.

A new car was our first purchase! Mine was seriously dying right before the wedding, and we just needed it to last a few more months! She made it...not without LOTS of trouble though. It was parked out front of my brother's house about a month before the wedding when some kid ran a stopsign, was hit and pushed into my cute car What's your first BIG couple purchase? : wedding Icon Sad She survived though and now I have my cute new car

Not married yet, but our first big purchase was a pickup! I was NOT excited about it, but FI's old pickup was on its last leg, and the new one was a steal, and his dream manly-man pickup.

I figured we better get this out of the way before we have a house & kids lol.

We are not married yet, but we live together; we recently bought a replacement cd-player system for our car to replace the ghetto 10 year old original one that was in there. It was definitely worth the money!

Our house will be our biggest purchase together. And I'm sure there will be lots of big furniture, electronic, and home improvement purchases right after that.

Oh, that's going to be so fun when we get to that stage.  The mister can't start his *real* job until after the wedding, but I'm HOPING it'll be a house when our apartment lease ends in early 2010!

We're not married yet, but a few months after getting engaged, my FI & I bought a house here in the bay area & we're so glad we did!  We pushed our wedding out to a 1.5 year engagement to get used to the payment shock and combining our finances to save for the wedding, but it was so worth it cause we love our new home!  At the time, I couldn't imagine spending all this $$ on a wedding w/out a home, so I'm glad we did it!

Our new bed!  We both knew we wanted to spend money get a nice, king size bed so we held off on getting nicer furniture for the rest of the house, so we could have that!

Technically our first big purchase was a house and now it's been everything to put in it, new kitchen appliances, new living/dining/bedroom furniture!

We haven't made any big purchases since the wedding.  We did most of our big purchases beforehand- house, new tractor, new dishwasher, couches, etc.  I'd say our next thing is a new fridge.  Oh and I badly want a new washer/dryer.  Ours is so old, but it hasn't broken YET so there's no need to waste money right now...ugh.

We bought a house!  And then we bought new paint and kitchen appliances for it.  And then bedroom furniture.

We've been very busy stimuating the economy.

Not married yet but a year ago we  bought a house together. I think that is the biggest so far and then a few months ago a new truck! So I am sure the next thing that we actually might buy together will be bedroom furniture  not as big but it counts!

Before we moved in together 2 yrs ago we bought a bed together.  We werent' even engaged yet - how scandalous!

Since then we've bought other stuff together (computer, tv...) but are not yet married.  We are buying a condo and closing on it next week!   We just joined finances so I guess technically now everything we buy is "together"....

We aren't married yet, but our first purchase was a car a month after we moved in together.  I hadn't owned a car in over 12 years (NYC living!), so I was much more nervous about driving than I was about making a big purchase with him!

@Erindsmar--i got to pick out "his" bed when we weren't engaged yet. This was like, 2 years before the ring! Apparently my opinion meant a lot, lol

I can't wait to buy a big tv, but we're waiting until February after super bowl weekend. Apparently they're cheapeast then.

We got a 4" memory foam mattress topper for like $200 at Walmart. It's awesome ladies, you should all go get one. It's soooooo comfy.

we've made quite a few big purchases but the first was a new bed... king size and loving it!  ummm, we broke the other one which was a very nasty surprise one night when it basically collapsed underneath us!

otherwise we've basically refitted the entire house with new stuff as i moved in with hubby and his stuff was about 8yrs old. my wanna-have was the snazzy upside down fridge i really really wished for and his wanna-have was the 65" screen & 3 custom made leather high back & reclining cinema seating

Hopefully it'll be a house...but since we're going to be apart for a year, I don't know exactly when that will be.  Though fizicsGuy is a huge nerd about these types of things (shocking with a name like that, I know), and he's predicting that this winter will be a good time to buy where we live.  We'll just have to see how things look at that point.  I've owned before and though it's freeing to feel like something really belongs to you, it's a lot of responsibility.  I just don't want to rush into it b/c something's a good price.

Even though we've lived together for a while, I've always been adamant about not buying a house together unless we were engaged (ideally not until after getting married).  I've had friends buy before getting engaged it was fine.  I've had others for whom the break up turned into a nightmare owing to owning a house.  So for me, buying a house will really feel like a "married" purchase.

Our biggest material purchase so far was definitely our All-Clad set, but we bought it with wedding/tax refund money. Other than that, we're prepaying the after-insurance cost of the delivery of our daughter. Does that count? ;)

We bought a new livingroom set, a big ol' new tv, and a new tv for our bedroom. We also painted the entire house and bought wonderful original pieces of art work to decorate the rooms.
