We "get" Thanksgiving and Christmas Day off. I'm new at this job, so I was only "allowed" to pick one other day. I picked Black Friday, so I have to work Christmas Eve.
I am a PhD student and so my schedule is pretty flexible but basically the university closes on the 23rd and is partially open the 27th,28th, 29th but doesn't truly re-open until the 4th! I will take this whole time off!
FI on the other hand really only has bank holidays off because he works at a bank; however, this is way better than his last job because there they were open ON CHRISTMAS - UGH!
I think its such a waste to make people come in on certain days. Maybe its just my office but the day after Thanksgiving and the days leading to Christmas are FAR from productive. They may as well send us all home! Even my boss is hopped up on eggnog, what's the use? Lol. So, I always take the day after Thanksgiving off and Christmas Eve. Usually I take off more but since they ration our days in such a dumb way I have to save up for the wedding/honeymoon, yuck.
We get Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and New Years Day off, but this year for obvious reasons, I will be done with work Christmas Eve and won't be back till 1/11/09.
@jennifer_espos: I agree. It's just dead around the holidays at my office, which is why I'm so grateful we have that week of half days. My husband is always saying that he does nothing on Christmas Eve when he actually goes in to work, but of course, the President of the company is never there himself, and he controls the schedule. It's just so stupid. Oh well!
I work for a university that is closed the following days: Thankgiving and Friday as well as 12/25-1/4. It's really nice because you're always off for the holidays and you don't have to burn vacation days to do so!

My huband and I were talking about this last night. Our company holiday schedules differ a lot. While I don't get very many holidays off during the year, I will say that my company is very generous around the holiday season. Whereas his is definitely not.
For Thanksgiving, I get a half day on Wednesday (tomorrow, yay!), and Thanksgiving and Black Friday off. For Christmas, I get a half day on the 23rd, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off, and the week between Christmas and New Year's, we all only work half days because it's our slowest week of the year.
My husband's company is also really slow during the holidays, but they make him work the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.
What is everyone else's schedule like? I'm very pro work-life balance, so of course, my husband's schedule annoys me, but I know many companies are run like that. He usually takes Christmas Eve off anyway to travel, so it works out, but I do always feel like he shouldn't have to use a vacation day for that. Do you feel your holiday schedule at work is fair? Do you think your company is conscientious of a work-life balance when it comes to the holidays?
