In the fridge, unless I leave it out to soften it if I'm baking something.
In the fridge. Isn't that why it comes in the refrigerated section at the grocery store?
In.
The only person I know that keeps it out is my 99 year old great grandmother.
Out. Or I should say in the cupboard. I HATE shredding my toast with rock-hard butter.
My FI leaves it out, and it annoys the hell out of me. I keep it in, as does my kids and my FI's 19 year old son!!!!
I kind of like it out (I've NEVER heard of anyone getting sick from eating butter that was left out! I think of it more like fat...like, we don't keep oil or shortening in the fridge!) But I don't like it out in the summer when it gets all melty. But I hate it when I forget to take it out of the fridge to use it for something, then it's all hard and I have to microwave it and it MELTS! argh!
@Zinzerena: a solution? get two sticks of butter! (one in, one out) ;-)
I leave some out. I HATE hard butter. I do keep the rest in the refrigerator so it will keep longer.
I use a butter bell just because it makes me feel like I'm doing something to keep it fresh. But my parents and grandparents all left a bit out in a covered butter dish and no one ever got sick.
EDIT: This question begs for a poll!
In the fridge, but my great grandmother has always kept hers in the cupboard and never had any problems.
Both!
We usually buy the unsalted packs with sticks in it. We keep the package in the fridge, but there's always 1 stick in the cupboard so we have soft butter at hand.
In! My parents keep theirs out and I don't mind uing it when I'm visiting.
out and in.... i have a small air tight container that i keep about a stick in that is for the cupboard. and the rest gets kept in the fridge (or sometimes freezer as i don't go through butter that often) until i need it.
In the Fridge, unless I'm about to bake something, then I leave it out for a while to soften.
Keeping it out breeds bacteria that may not get you sick most of the time but will eventually do so. It is refigerated for a reason. Just like you can technically leave meat out on the counter for a day and you wont get sick but in order for it to last and not build up bacteria (and go bad quickly in this case) then it needs to be refrigerated. Also, it says to do so on the package for a reason...
Both! Unopened sticks are in the fridge, one stick should be left out so that it is soft. ALSO... it kida depends on the season. During Hot summers sometimes I don;t have any out since it will melt, but in Cold winters, sometimes even left out butter is hard.
In. But I use it so rarely I can't imagine it not going rancid. . . I actually usually keep most of it in the freezer and a little in the fridge. I'll leave it out for an hour or something if I know I'm going to need it soft. Otherwise, I microwave it when the time comes. This is a delicate art, though.
I've never heard of it not being in the fridge!
I keep it in and then when I am going to butter something I take it out a few minutes before spreading and its not hard anymore.
@Neva: I love that idea of only having some out! I usually cut off like 2-3 inches and just leave that out, so it's never out for more than a week or so before it gets used up.
I also use a butter bell, love that thing! So out. And butter should not be stored out more than 30 days if using a butter bell. If not using a bell it should be in the fridge
I next to never eat butter. The only reason I have any in my fridge is because my mom (who buys 5 pounds at a time) is moving. After having Amish made butter its just like eating a Hershey's after eating real chocolates. However, if I do get in a butter and jam toast kick I would rather it be out. Growing up it was always out.
Both! We keep 2 or 3 bricks in the fridge, and keep a small bowl in the cupboard filled with maybe 1/4 cup at a time, for toast and cooking and stuff.
Both. We usually leave all but one stick out and often I put it all in the fridge during the warmer months.
In the fridge.
But FI's family leaves it out on a butter dish and I am starting to come around....
I always have a stick out in a covered butter dish. The rest unopened sticks are kept in the fridge.
