Hmm...if you enjoy yourself more when he's not with you than when you're together, that means (to me) that it's time to move out and move on.
Yeah, I'd say that's a pretty big red flag. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the occasional down time away from FI, but I definitely miss him and have more fun with him around.
I agree with the other posters, if you find yourself looking forward to being on your own or enjoy your time without him as much as you're saying then maybe it's time to move on. I love alone time, but I always miss my SO and get tired of being on my own pretty quickly ;)
If you don't like being with him, you should think about why you feel that way. Maybe it's because you like alone time or being engaged keeps worrying you. As far as saving up for your own place, always keep extra money aside or your own personal account, you never know what will or can happen, regardless of being a waiting bee, engaged or married. Nothing is guaranteed.
I agree NOTHING is guaranteed- even when I get married, I am going to have a savings account that no one BUT me has access to and I plan to dump anywhere from $20- 50 per check into it. If I never need it then I have tons of money saved up for additional retirement money. If I ever should need it, I have the means to walk away from an undesirable relationship.
@armychica06: such a good idea. saving never hurts
If your friends are telling you to do something as serious as saving up to get a place of your own, maybe there are other factors you need to consider aside from how long you've been waiting? Unless there's a backstory or history I haven't followed... but I can tell you that if my friends told me to move out, I'd start really considering what's actually happening in my relationship. Just a thought?

Just saw I'm number 8 on the waiting list. This says to me that I have been waiting too bleeping long. Ugh. Friends counsel me to move on, save up enough money to move into my own place and just leave. I'm torn. I have so much fun when he goes away to see family. Hmm.
