We struggled with this also since we already have china, stemware etc.
I ended registering for some super high end cooking items that I wanted, and I'm slightly ashamed to say, a lot of small items that will probably be returned for cash or giftcards.
We had this same problem! Our kitchen was already stocked to overflowing.
Stuff that we found worked well were things like serving pieces (platters, nice cheese trays, decanters, etc.), tools/lawn/yard equipment (the FI loved this), and kitchen gadgets we lusted after but never bought (like the rabbit!).
We have everything as well. SO, we have registered for our honeymoon.
We're in the same boat. We're registering for china, crystal, serving pieces, and a variety of other things FI didn't think we needed until we were at the store.
maybe bikes or camping stuff if you like the outdoors or electronics?
We did a honeymoon registry for the exact same reason. I know some people find them to be "tacky" but that's okay with us. When my fiance moved into his own place we bought everything that we would ever want for our kitchen.
Some of the big things we may register for though--stand mixer (although I'm not sure if we really have the space for it), a nice vacuum. We won't be registering for china but I've heard if you think you will ever want it then go ahead and register for it.
You could always add things like camping gear, bikes, tools, lawn furniture---anything that represents some sort of hobby that you enjoy.
I just keep hoping that guests will somehow get word that we would really just love money :)
replace what you already have to have with even nicer items? E.g. non-contact infrared thermometer, stand mixer attachments, personal items are good too (it doesn't have to be household/marriage related) Windows 7? Adoboe photoshop? Spread by word of mouth that gift cards and cash gifts are preferred.
That's a good one. I've got alot and in fact last Christmas got 20 place settings of sterling from my aunt so that's one less thing now too.
I'm registering for everyday place setting, we both have our formal china patterns and he even has the Lenox christmas pattern which blends with my formal china perfectly (we're meant to be!). We will also register for new linens and towels (because there will be one kid full time in the house and two others there quite alot).
We might do a honeymoon registry for outings or the like. Excursions.
I like the weddingbee honeymoon registry too!
We may also register for things for our home like vases and I want a new expresso/cappucino machine. Bar stuff.
upgrades! You will think of stuff, but I'm sure there is something that you would like a nicer version of. Or a new gadget! My favorite gift was the new tassimo esspresso maker. There is always something out there.
Also, if you are a wine drinker I wanted to register at www.winenotes.com but we decided against it at the last minute.
Fi and I haven't registered for exactly this reason. We already have what we need, and anything we want we could just buy ourselves. We plan on not registering at all..if guests want to get something for us they can, but I don't expect anything. It also helps that we're mostly Asian, and the norm is to just give money anyway.
Bed, Bath and Beyond returned our gifts for cash (I've been told that this depends upon the individual store's diescretion). I'm a pretty serious baker, and my husband is a pretty serious cook so we were able to register for and use high-end cooking equipment. We also had a charity registry, where people gave us gift certificates to kiva (this is a site that allows you to make microloans to people in developing nations).
Ohhh... all great ideas! Thank you... we've been stalling on doing this because we don't know where to start. I'm going to share all these ideas w/ Mr P tonight and see if we can't get the ball rolling!
How about luggage? I already have many of the high end kitchen appliances (stand mixer, food processor), good knives and pots. But, it's time to replace the dishes! And we selected some decorative pieces too.
You could spread the word that you want gifts to stock the bar: wine, liquor, cocktail glasses, decanter, shaker, etc. You can register now at REI for outdoor gear, ski equip., etc. Artwork, prints, etc.
I like an Amazon registry for this. You can register for outdoor/sporting equipment, electronics, or anything else that you need. And towels/sheets always need to be updated every so many years, so you two may as well start fresh. :) And I love arizonabride's idea about stocking the bar--the only time I ever buy off-registry is when I buy a couple a bottle of wine to go with the wine glasses I got them off the registry. ;)
We're in the same boat also. We've been living together for a few years and have a well stocked house - certainly not "starting out" or building a house like some. We haven't registered yet, but plan to register for a few "upgrade" kitchen items: a really good knife set, higher-end pots and pans. Things we would love to have and would use, but might not go out and splurge on. Also going to register for wine/martini glasses, and we can always use more of those.
we're going to try not to register for too much because (this may sound tacky), we would rather have cash to put towards an amazing honeymoon or our nest egg than china sets, crystal vases or other items we wouldn't use.
We didn't really register for much either because we had already owned our own home for 2 years and it was basically furnished. I was thinking about registering for new furniture but we knew we were moving so we didn't want to risk having all our new stuff broken. We mostly registered for smaller things because we didn't have a large wedding and could get away with not having a lot of stuff on the registry. You could always get people to put money in a wedding/house/something fund.

... what the heck should they register for? Mr P both have been on our own for a long time, our college hand me downs have been replaced with nicer items already and when we combine households we are going to need to downsize anyway. Besides linens and towels we are struggling with what to register for. Any advice appreciated!
