When do you all plan on sending your Save-The-Date Cards and invitations? I know the standard timeline but thinking I might want to give extra time for invitations for those that plan their summers out in advance.

i actually already sent out our STD’s (lol maybe too early?) along with our engagement pictures because they were ready and i figured, we already have less then a year…but i’m not sure when we will send out our invites..

I have been encouraged to send them out asap, but I will probably wait until August or September. For the folks who need the extra time to plan I have already phoned ahead to ask if next summer is even doable for them –as the folks who need the extra notice are strangely my nearest and dearest.

We sent out our STDs 9 months before to give people extra time, since many of our guest are OOTers. As for our wedding invites, we’re sending them out at about 9 weeks before the wedding.

Thanks ladies. This is super helpful! I did do engagement announcements initially to our Out of Town folks but it has been word of mouth about the date from both my parents and my FI’s parents to Out of Town family who will be invited. So I know most of them are aware of the date.
missmouse, you are so right! And that is mainly what I worried about. The folks near us need the notice quicker strangely enough. I have told most of them the date but I still worry without something in hand that they won’t save the date but I don’t want it to get to them too early.
At the same time, I am trying to plan when to do our engagement photos because I’d like to incorporate them into the Save-The-Date Cards. This helps a lot though!

I was wondering about this as well, particularly since ours is over the July 4th weekend. It seems so early to send them out now, though!

I sent my save the dates out in january for my october wedding… so 9 months. i didnt want to do it earlier just because people dont have their new calenders yet… but for a july wedding i would say send them out in september, early enough to not compete with the holiday craziness but not sooo early that people dont think about them…

We’re planning on sending out Save-The-Date Cards by the end of August but have been spreading the date by word of mouth. We put a RSVP date of 4 weeks before our actual date and plan to send them out 4-6 weeks before that date so basically 2 months before the wedding. I’ve already had a few friends that have conflicts with other weddings too!

I should probably clarify, Save-The-Date Cards in AugSept.
Invites will probably head out in April or May (unless I get antsy and send them out early).

I sent out my save the dates about a month and a half ago as my fiance is Australian and we have lots of family and friends coming in from all over the globe. In addition, we’re getting married in a small town in northern Wisconsin and hotel rooms are not plentiful so we wanted to make sure our guests would have a place to stay…. unfortunately, we’ve run into a bit of an issue with guests calling to make reservations but the hotel only checking for the July weekend 2010 (despite our guests clarifying 2011) and informing them they’re fully booked! So my advice would be to maybe wait until the one year mark to avoid hotel issues like that….but as that’s sort of a moot point now, I think sending them out now is perfectly fine.

i skipped the save the dates and only did invitations. i sent mine out father’s day weekend and the wedding is the end of october. so 4 months in advance. most of my guests live out of town (and out of the country). so i figured this would give them plenty of time to plan, save, and get passports if they dont have them already.

Seeing as you’re getting married in the middle of vacation season, I would think that the traditional save-the-date timeline wouldn’t really apply as much (you could get away with sending them early). We usually book our summer vacation rental each September for the following summer. If I were a potential guest at your wedding, I’d ideally like to receive your save-the-date sometime in late August or early September so I could plan my vacation around your wedding date.

@MaggieGirl: Eek! That makes me nervous! We definitely won’t be ready by then. 🙁

I guess I meant I would like them as early as then… and that’s super early anyway. Don’t listen to what I say 🙂

We are planning to send out our STD’s in late August or early September, my Future Mother-In-Law thinks ASAP is best. We get our engagement photos taken next week and are hoping to use them on our wedding website since we are including the address on our postcard
Most people already know the date but we have a lot of Out of Town guests and we want to get the information out to everyone with plenty of time since the wedding date may effect summer vacation plans for next year. Our invites will probably go out a good 8-10 weeks before because hotel rooms will need to be booked early due to a local event the same weekend as our wedding.
